The Last Jedi : a Fan Edit <strong>Ideas</strong> thread
Time

I’d try to tone down Hux in general, take out most of the ‘AotC R2/3PO’ BB-8 moments, but I guess that’s about it? The first scene REALLY bothered me. I thought it was a joke at first. Like, an actual joke, that the cinema wasn’t playing the actual movie, and that was some sort of TV spot. It was one of the least Star Wars-y things for me in the whole movie. Took me out completely. I wouldn’t take any of the ones with Luke and Rey out though. Maybe the one about the busy day, but I don’t think so. I’d have to give it another watch in order to make an actual cutlist though, I haven’t watched it in over a month.

The OT was specifically designed to not be slow paced or spend to much time showing the scenery. Lucas said himself that he didn’t want to linger on the alien landscapes and crazy special effects more than necessary. He wanted audiences to take it for granted, as if they lived in the galaxy all their life. And those films are only (relatively) slower paced in retrospect.

Exactly. It’s really funny, last year I watched Star Wars with my dad and he said “oh god! Such a fast paced movie! Hahaha” (he’s 73). I then went on to watch Star Wars again with a friend of mine, and after the movie was over she said “well… that was a bit slow, wasn’t it?” (she’s 18).

Had a Christopher Nolan double feature of The Prestige and Interstellar this weekend. Now, The Prestige has been a favorite of mine since it came out, more on the strength of its tone, cast and production design than on it’s admittedly sort of preposterous story, but I was really knocked out by Interstellar, which I haven’t seen since its 2014 release. I get the sense that a lot of folks think it’s kind of middling Nolan, but after this viewing I really think it might be my favorite. It hits a lot of sweet spots for me.

Other than that, I watched A Hard Day’s Night while more than a little drunk on Friday, after listening to Ken Jennings talk about it on the Movie Crush podcast at work. I picked up the Criterion blu-ray of it a few months ago but hadn’t gotten to it yet. Sweet Christ is that ever a beautiful transfer.

As far as next movie seen goes, my local theater finally got The Shape of Water, so I’ll be going to see that in a couple hours.

Interstellar and The Prestige are my favorite Nolan movies, followed closely by Dunkirk, Inception and The Dark Knight. I still have to watch Memento. Is it any good?

Multiple pages of argument in the TLJ Review thread over whether or not Luke force-choked the Gamorrean guards at Jabba’s palace.

Well that’s easy.

He did.

Well, using both the script and the movie itself as reference, there’s plenty of convincing arguments that he technically didn’t.

Though I had no idea this had anything to do with a TLJ review. How exactly are those two related?

I think they were arguing Luke’s moral standards, if he’d do bad things, such as choking people at all.

And no, there are no convincing arguments that he didn’t. Adywan quoted the script (or the novelization) and it’s pretty clear that the guards were being choked.

Nirvana is overrated.

Five Finger Death Puncher confirmed.

ALLOL

Is that some American expression I’m not familiar with?? (Not allol, but five finger death puncher)

Ok so they’re a band and I feel really dumb because given the context it seemed pretty obvious, but I didn’t think a band would be named ‘five finger death punch’, so it didn’t even cross my mind. It kind of sounds like the name of an ultimate combo from a fighting video game or something. Doesn’t sound like something I’d enjoy listening to though

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - cool movie, had the potential to be the best Harry Potter franchise movie, but failed because of a confusing plot. I really liked the characters and the part of the story where they’re looking for the lost creatures in New York, and really liked the chemistry between the characters. Unfortunately I didn’t like the Obscurus part of the plot, and honestly it felt like it belonged in a completely different movie, given the huge tone discrepancy between it and the other subplots.

Edit: I liked how it portrayed the US as super conservative 😉
