MKV to AVCHD in TS Muxer?
Time

Harmy said:

OK, I'm trying to make an AVCHD with a motion menu in MultiAVCHD and it just doesn't seem to work (POWER DVD 10 won't load it). I tried the "relaxed AVCHD" option and a "any Blu-Ray player" option and then created an ISO with ImgBurn. Media Player Classic HC loads it but it only plays the film and not the menu. Could anyone help me with that? Is it gonna work on Blu-Ray players?

I assume you are using multiAVCHD 3 as Adywan suggested.  I have never made an AVCHD with a motion menu and do not use any of those programs, so I cannot really help, other than to suggest you try the strict AVCHD profile.  The only way to know is to burn and see; if not on your player, then on someone else's.  Blu-ray players being fussy with AVCHDs is unfortunately rather common.

Harmy said:Also with 1pass FAST option the film took me over twelve hrs to encode I can only imagine that the 2pass VHQ would take ages.

Now you understand why I recommended 1-pass turbo.  :-)   2-pass VHQ took me at least four days i.e. 96 hours.  As I said before, the developer of multiAVCHD himself uses 1-pass turbo.  If you must perform a second pass, use 2 -pass fast, but it is a waste of time in my opinion.  You might also try Ripbot, but I think multiAVCHD 3 yields greater compatibility.

Have you tried getting the version posted to usenet 21 days ago? I don't know if its from the same rip that was posted to tehparadox though

I downloaded 1-3 from tehparadox and experienced no problems.  Only 4 was downloaded from usenet, which I believe you posted, but I think that I have only played that through my media player.  Perhaps there is a problem with the usenet upload of 3.

advice on laserdiscs.

They must have dropped in price considerably in the last year.  I bought a Pioneer LD player about a year ago, which was unfortunately damaged in transit, and it was a fair amount more than that; and compared to other auctions I thought that was a good deal.  My OT laserdiscs were £35 about the same length of time ago, and that was not bad compared to other prices I saw then.

David Prowse Banned - Not Paid Royalties

I think LFL's issue is that Prowse writes "David Prowse is Darth Vader", not just "David Prowse".

In that case, I understand Lucasfilm's objection, although I do not agree that Lucasfilm should be empowered to ban him from writing the slogan.  "David Prowse is Darth Vader" sounds awfully like he is minimising the contribution of other artists to the character. Why not just sign it "David Prowse"?  No one could justifiably object to that; it would identify him with the character without sounding as if others were being sidelined, and everybody would be happy.

I just meant in regards to the royalties. With no face, no voice, and a considerable ammount of doubling for the fight scenes, Prowse was kinda a glorified stand-in. Even Peter Mayhew had eyes showing. Vader's most dramatic moments could have been done with a helmet on a stand.

In fairness, he did also have to learn all the lines well enough for other actors to interact with him in a natural way.  I remember from the LOTR extras that people thought Andy Serkis was just a stand in, until they realized how much he brought to the role.  You might argue that Serkis did more than Prowse, and I would agree, but if Prowse had not learnt his part well, we might have had a similar problem to that of the prequels, in which actors had to deliver their lines to empty air in front of a blue screen.

edit - looks like SilverWook beat me to it.  That will teach me to type something off and on, whilst doing several other activities.

Working with DVD Storylines (seamless branching) - TEST FILE

All the options Chewtobacca mentioned are possible.  But for now this thread is for researching issues related to seamless branching/storylining.

Once the 'Preservation' forum thread is created then this might all change as the project specifics get discussed.  The projects inspiration is the tv format and separating out the elements for the convience of production, is something I can afford to look past at this time.

I understand, and am sorry for not really answering the question.  :-) I did try to find out how to do this a while back, and could not find any precise information.  (To be clear, I intended the three points in my first post to be successive steps, rather than different options.)

I believe DVD Lab Pro is your best bet for seamless branching.

I actually almost like that different people pronounce names differently: Tarkin says "Lee-ah" where Luke says "Lay-ah", Obi-Wan says "Tattoo-in" where Luke says "Tah-tooine", Lando says "Hehn" where Leia says "Hahn" and Han says "Hun". Similarly to people having different accents, it makes the thing more believable. If everyone speaks the same way it can sound too artificial.

Absolutely, but the problem is that Luke has never pronounced Tatooine that way up to that point and never pronounces it that way again. Like you said, he says "Tah-tooine" not "Tah-dooine" Maybe it's just my ears, but it sounds way different. different enough that I thought he must be reffering to a similarly named planet like Dantooine.

...However if you were referring to the way Lando says Han, then I've got no quarrel with you good sir or mam. That's fine like wine.

I think Dantooine might be pronounced differently in the same way, but I might be wrong.  There might be an instance of the the same actor using different pronunciations of the same name.  I quite like having different ways of saying the same word though. :-)

The goal is to take a TV recording and have a playback option which skips the commercials.  Possibly might have a third option which will offer up a second set of commercials instead of the original ones.

Why do you need the commercials?  Is it nostalgia?  I have no experience with seamless branching.  Instead, if I were you, I would:

1.  Edit out the commercials for the main feature, in your editing program.

2.  Make the original commericals into a video featurette.  Make another featurette with the alternative commercials.

3.  Author a DVD with the main feature, and add two extras: original commercials featurette and alternative commercials featurette.

That way you could edit without having to worry about seamless branching, avoid compatibility problems and preserve the commercials.  Just a thought!

Speaking as a fellow "old git", I agree! :-)  I think Adywan's versions should favour modern effects.  If I want the original effects, there are other versions of the films I can watch.

So... how do I get this onto my PS3 short of a BD burner?

Use tsmuxer to remux the m2ts to a ts.  (You will need to mount the ISO with Virtual Clone Drive, if the download be an ISO, and pull out the m2ts file.)  MKV2VOB will accept the ts as an input, and break it into chunks without trancoding.

Configuration--> File Splitting --> FAT32

There will probably be about a dozen files, and I believe people rarely break files this big, but it should work.  This approach could be used if you want to literally put the BD-50 onto your PS3:  otherwise, you might be able to stream it, but I have no experience with streaming, so perhaps somebody else could advise you on that.

N.B.  When you load the m2ts into tsmuxer you could take the opportunity to ditch any unwanted audio tracks.  That should reduce the number of chunks if you do choose this route.

I had intended for it to come off as threepio already knowing they are being offered as a gift.  This is why he now just says "And... a gift." He no longer says "Gift? What gift?".

That is a good idea.  In that case, you could cut the shot of Threepio.

EDIT: I just had an idea to slow it down a bit.  What if, instead of reaction shots, I cut from the shot of the detonator to a shot of Leia's face, glaring at jabba, and then cut to jabba's reaction to it.

That might work.  You could also cut to Bobo Fett's drawing his weapon, then cut to Leia-as-Bounty-Hunter's glaring at Jabba, before finally showing Jabba's response.  That would have the advantage of giving you more of a reaction from "the room" - as it were -  and make Boba's subsequent lowering of his weapon seem more consistent.  (We might, of course, have surmised that Boba had drawn the weapon at some point anyway, but leaving it in might avoid potential confusion.)

Illogical.

I agree.  Perhaps the thought is that it is too close to the original/special edition, but that would not make sense as Darth Editous' edit is there.  Maybe the point is that the Purist Edition does not reflect the faneditor's intended version, but that would not make sense either, as many faneditors have made changes in response to feedback.  As you say, it is entirely illogical.

I quite like Threepio's reaction to Luke's presenting the droids to Jabba as a gift.   It does work, and we have to bear in mind that many edits seem strange as we know these films so well that we expect to see what has always been there.  On the other hand, one might argue that a more dramatic reaction to the news would be more in character for Threepio.

The reaction to the thermal detonator is clever, but a little too quick for my liking.  You are absolutely right about the Muppets-style reaction shots, but I think that unfortunately the best of the bad bunch might have to stay.  Could you keep Boba Fett and change the music?
