Info Wanted: ANH.....Revisited or Purist???
Time

Crygor64 said: The entire point of this web site was to preserve the original trilogy. And that's mainly because most of us were disgusted with the changes made by George Lucas. Some of us feel art should remain consistent to its original vision. Adding your own changes makes you just as bad as George Lucas, if not worse. (At least he can say "they're my films.")

Yes; this site is here to preserve the theatrical versions of the original trilogy, but that does not mean that people here have to dislike the concept of a special edition. I have no problem whatsoever with any filmmaker making a special edition or director's cut of one of their films, even it turns out to be radically different from the theatrical cut, as long as the theatrical version is treated as a part of cinema history and preserved in high quality.

Adywan wants both the original trilogy and his ideal versions preserved and available to people. George Lucas only wants the latter, and is strongly opposed to the former. That is what makes Adywan and George Lucas different. In fact, Adywan has already restored the theatrical cut of The Empire Strikes in the highest quality that he could, and has pledged to restore Star Wars (A New Hope) too. We all hope that he will turn his efforts towards Return of the Jedi in due course.

Furthermore, I am not certain that Adywan's edits are the most popular feature of the site, although I can see why you would think that. It is true that the threads for ANH:R and ESB:R are the biggest, but that is because the majority of the interest in making additions and changes to the films is concentrated in those two places, whereas posts by those primarily interested in preservations are dispersed throughout the many project and technical discussion threads that relate to preservations. There is also the fact that discussion of new ideas generates many posts, whereas with preservations people more or less agree on what needs to be done and there is less to debate. Finally, there is the fact that people frequently use Adywan's threads for off topic discussion, which is why I rarely read them any more (although I admit that I have been guilty of this myself on more than one occasion.)

Help: looking for... Newsgroups Availability of the Moth3r DVDs

Thank you, Darth Mallwalker! I am downloading ROTJ now. :-)

Thanks for ROtJ, but man, that audio hiss & pop is annoying.

I assume the audio fix doesn't improve this. Is there no other audio that can be synchronized to this? If there isn't and the video looks as good as people say, I might try to synchronize the PAL GOUT audio to it.

Anyone here speak Spanish? I'm curious to know whether or not his Spanish is as deplorable as his English...

It actually seems well constucted, though obviously it is not punctuated. "Thank you. Go and be f***** by a donkey. Don't f*** with me." is the gist of it. I believe the middle element could other connotations too. It looks Mexican to me.

Pajero is "j**k off" or "w**ker" depending on whether one wishes to translate it into American or British English. I am not quite sure whom he was addressing though.

There is no dropped 'd', it may be softer due to the way the two words are joined and phrased but this is often a very common occurrence in speech especially in the English Gent style.

It is most certainly not "English Gent" style.

Frink is right though. We should stop this.

35 seconds in. Sir Alec Guiness would never drop a D!

DE

I believe he has though. Nobody's perfect. :-D The script says "and he". I also think that the way I would say "Annie" would be subtly different from the way I would say "an' he".

Say what we want about the National Anthem, it isn't as bad as Canada's.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

what so bad about that? I rather like it.

I agree. I have always liked the Canadian national anthem.

What about Rule Britannia?

Lovely tune but the title sends out mixed messages, other than Britain, Britain should rule nobody. The anthem is intended to be more about the then British mastery of the sea

Exactly! Bingowings put it perfectly.

Warbler said:I see nothing wrong with God Save The Queen or The Star-Spangled Banner. They've been the National Anthems of both countries for years. I say let it stay that way.

I couldn't care less what the national anthem of the UK is. I'm talking about making Land of Hope of Glory England's national anthem: it doesn't currently have an official one. As for what is wrong with the aforementioned anthems, I just do not like either and think better alternatives exist.

This is the old verse about the Scots that was at one time in the UK's national anthem.

Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
and like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God save the King.

This is just anti-Jacobite though really.

I can't stand the British National anthem (Land Of Hope And Glory is much more sing-a-longable and it hasn't got that naughty verse about the Scots).

I also think England should get it's own National Anthem (all the other UK Countries have them), Jerusalem ( a song about not resting on imaginary laurels).

Land of Hope and Glory should be England's national anthem, not that of the UK, as it was written by Elgar, whose music, for me, embodies England. I agree that God Save the Queen is awful.

America the Beautiful is far better than The Star-Spangled Banner too, so I'm with TheBoost on that one.

I hate it when people use the  emoticon almost constantly. On some forums I see it all the time and have come to loathe the very sight of it. If it has to be used, surely it should be reserved for a truly noteworthy occurrence, not for anything that loosely falls into the positive category.

Nezha Conquers the Dragon King (1979) - BBC 1.66:1 & Theatrical 2.35:1 preservations (Released)

Interesting it seems the 2:35:1 version has the most picture information.

In the first shot satanika posted it does. In the second and third shots it has much less. It looks like a cropped 4:3 original to me. Perhaps the intro was zoomed to focus on the cockerel, if that is what it is.

EDIT: Well, IMDB has it 35mm, 2.35:1, with anamorphic as the cinematographic process. Usually you have extra picture information if you use Super 35 and open the mattes. In which case, what does anamorphic mean in this context?

I have never seen this. It looks really interesting. I shall have to track down a copy. I love animation. Thanks for the thread, satanika!

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

These are for ESB. I don't think ANH is any different, but I would have to check. As dark_jedi reminded me, ROTJ would have different values, as it is based on the PAL version.

By the way, these values are for an anamorphic DVD.

EDIT: ANH is different. I edited the previous post.

EDITED AGAIN: I removed the third option as it was wrong. My mistake!

ESB

Spline36Resize(720,384).Crop(8,14,-8,-10,align=true).AddBorders(0,60,0,60)

or

Spline36Resize(720,384).Crop(8,14,-8,-10,align=true).AddBorders(8,60,8,60)

The first would give you a 704x480 DVD, and the second, a 720x480 one.

EDIT: I have deleted the third option. It was wrong: I overlooked something.

I prefer the first option.

ANH

Dual-Layer vs. Single-Layer DVDs (Picture Quality)?
Time

donovader said:

The single-layer version of Adywan's ESB looks great, but I made me think, "would this DVD benefit that much from a higher bitrate, which is possible on a dual-layer DVD?".

I think there would be a small but significant increase in the picture quality. (TV's Frink is right about where this should be discussed.) I seem to remember that Adywan has said that a dual-layer might happen at some point, but I would not count on it being any time soon. No one can post pictures of something that has not been released yet, and I am not sure you would notice a massive difference from screenshots anyway.
