Converting a 4X3 w/s DVD to either 16X9 or 1080p blu-ray?
Time

He appears to mean a non-anamorphic widescreen DVD.  Converting to 1080p is a waste of time.  For the GOUT, your best bet is to download one of the conversions that have already been done or wait for dark_jedi's new releases.  Search the Star Wars Preservations forum.

To answer your question though, the easiest way to do what you ask is to download the free version of DVD Rebuilder, load in your DVD and choose HC mode for your encoder.  Then go to

Settings --> Options --> AVS Options --> AVS Expert Options --> Convert LB 4:3 to 16:9

Yeah but ESB and ROTJ were good. The PT was suck.

I don't want my kid to grow up to be a researcher. I want him to like "Star Wars" and not think Vader is a whiny teenager.

I can understand that.  I wasn't thinking about quality: ESB and ROTJ were, of course, just examples of recontextualising.  Maybe they weren't especially  good ones given the topic!  I do see your point though. :-)

TheBoost said: I see your point, but 50 Cent's new album doesn't affect how we view "Revolver" or "Sgt. Peppers." The PT actively recontextualizes how the OT is viewed.

Yep, but one can of course say that ESB and ROTJ do that to SW.  Many sequels do that when they reveal details about the prevous films that were previously left to the imagination.  Despite growing up with the OOT, I can still act on what I have subsequently learnt about SW, forget the two following films, watch it as a stand alone film and appreciate it on that level.  It takes an effort, but I can do it.  The same is true of other films.

If children love Star Wars enough to research its origins and development when they grow up, they can do the same.  If they don't, then it won't matter.  I'm with Puggo on this one.

RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)
Time

Harmy said: Also, I wanted to ask, would it be ok to create an x264 MKV with the correct speed (23,97 fps) and PAL resolution

Pupil used to make those, and I've made them myself.  They played back fine in two different media players, but there will always be some players that ignore the DAR and display the video incorrectly.

If you do decide to use 1:1 instead, I would squash the video, rather than stretch it.  Playback problems are far more likely when you stretch it to 1024 or whatever, in my experience.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Harmy said:I know. That's why I said:  "and isn't the type to watch supplements"

I actually know a lot of people who don't give a rat's ass about watching documentaries and deleted scenes. I must say that with very few exceptions, that would be anyone over 40 from my surroundings.

I agree with you.  I too know plenty of people who don't like the prequels but don't mind the Special Editions and don't care about supplements.  The option to buy both trilogies isn't a bad one for many people.

Seamless branching of the 1997 SE would be nice, but I doubt it will happen.  Strange as it seems, I prefer the old CG Jabba too.  I couldn't tell you why; I just do.

They certainly do!

zombie84 said: Although it does resemble the SE, which shows that the SE isn't as "wrong" as people may think in this respect.

Is it possible to tweak the SE then?  Perhaps another attempt to mix SE footage with GOUT footage could be made.  I know the results were largely unsatisfactory in the past, but G-Force's scripts now make the GOUT look much better than before, and the colors could be made to be somewhere in the middle.

TheBoost said:But this ROTS review, especially part three, actually crosses the line where it's practically a textbook on filmmaking. I feel I'd be a better filmmaker after I watched this.

Funnily enough, I was thinking the same when I watched the third part.  Mental note: don't do this!  :D

Some of the comparisons Plinkett made with Citizen Kane were interesting.  Whether it really was what was going through Lucas' mind, I don't know, but it was interesting to see someone attempt to find method in the madness.

TheBoost said:For discussions sake, I do disagree that the long opening shot is somehow not impressive just because CGI imagery is now ubiquitous in cinema. I think the opening shot, starting with the two fighters and the slow reveal of just how HUGE that battle is one of the better action sequences in the film and some of the best CGI in the PT.

I agree on both counts.  Nonetheless, by this stage in the trilogy one is so sick of CGI that dismissing the sequence as just more of the same is an understandable response, even if it's perhaps not quite a fair one.

But I'll use this opportunity to say, I'd love to see Rick McCallum watch this.

I'd really like to see that.

I really liked the new Star Trek. When I saw it in the cinema, I thought: Wow, this film was more STAR WARS than any of the STAR WARS prequels!!!

You might well be right. :-)

It is funny tho!!

Yeah; I know!  I actually like Generations, even though I agree with many of his criticisms of it.  I don't like any of the other TNG movies though.  I love the fact that he hates First Contact even though most people rave about it.

I've considered watching the Star Trek review, but I haven't seen the film and I have zero interest in it. I've watched the first couple Trek films and hated them and I've seen some episodes of the various TV series over the years and hated all of that too. It's probably best if I just stay away from the Trek.

If that's true, you're probably right to stay away from it.  The reviews of Baby's Day Out and Avatar are good.

Anybody know if he has plans to do more Star Wars reviews? The story line with the kidnapped woman is unresolved so I would guess yes? I'd like to see him do the OT as well. Would be interesting to hear him review movies he likes.

Just bringing this back up before it gets lost. Any thoughts?

I don't think he will, because he has talked about them so much in the prequel reviews, but you never know.  Plinkett likes Star Trek (2009) though, so if you haven't seen that review, give it a go. :-)
