.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)
Time
To my knowledge, this is about preserving first and foremost the laserdiscs in the highest quality possible. To that end, no, there would not be, as none of the laserdiscs had more than a stereo track.

The project's second goal is to preserve the theatrical experience as much as possible from the highest-quality laserdisc sources available. On this side, unless someone were to have access to the six-track 70mm mix (which would end up being 4.1, not 5.1), the best you'll get is the theatrical stereo mix and the theatrical mono mix.

Now I'm sure someone will take this source material and combine it with a surround mix a la MeBeJedi's experiment with it a while back. So it'll probably happen, you just might have to wait a while. Of course, I'm not a member of the X0 team, so I could be wrong about all this, but this is my understanding of the project.

Avatar Issues
Time
I'm using Photoshop CS3 in OS X (Leopard) and every time I take a 28 KB, 395x360 GIF in to resize, I end up with a 80x72 JPEG that is inexplicably 64 KB.

How do I make something *smaller*, yet get a *larger* file size? I'm saving at "Baseline (standard)," level 6 (medium). All I want to do is get it down to the 5 KB limit and it just won't do it.

Any help on this?

April 4 is the season premiere on SciFi in America. 11 episodes were shot before the writer's strike, with a midseason break intended between 10 and 11. Since they don't have the last 9 shot, they're most likely going to show the first 10 episodes April-June, then the final 10 either this winter or early 2009 (my bet's on 2009).

And yes, they advertise it as beginning March 28 (or thereabouts), but that's just a recap episode a la "The Story So Far" and all Lost's recap episodes.

Spoilerage:

If you're referring to why Eli and Paul look the same, it's because they were twins - they were originally supposed to be played by different actors (Dano was cast as Paul), but then the actor portraying Eli quit, after Dano finished his filming for Paul. Anderson chose to recast Dano as Eli, but decided not to reshoot Paul's scenes with a different actor and just make the two characters twins.

And about the Kubrickian nods, Anderson originally was going to have the bowling alley painted white at the end as a "Clockwork Orange" reference, but then found out that someone was buying the mansion they were shooting in afterwards so decided against it - so yes, there's definitely some Kubrickian influence.

And about the last lines - with Daniel's last action, murdering Eli, he's finished. He will be arrested and lose everything he has, which is what he is personally referring to - that's what he means by the line. The underlying message is that the last of Daniel's sanity is finished - whatever sanity he held on to, by even the slimmest of threads, snapped, and he's psychologically finished. The entire movie is really about Plainview's slow descent from a successful, cunning businessman to an absolute madman, and the real question that it raises is - did greed *make* Plainview a madman, or was he always a madman, and merely waited so long to show it, his facade slowly disintegrating over time?

That's how I interpreted the film, anyway. I could be very off base.

There Will Be Blood...

It was absolutely fantastic - I was so enthralled that I didn't even look away from the screen during the credits, I was still glued to my seat. I haven't been this excited about a film since I first saw "Blade Runner." And I'm furious that Paul Dano wasn't nominated for best supporting actor. Beyond those vague comments, I need time for it to sink in a bit more before I can really talk about it.

Oh, and the music was amazing too.

Heath Ledger dead at 28
Time
This day sucked from the morning - I had a cavity filled, got a car in the ditch due to frozen roads, and it's my last day home before I leave for school again ...

... and then I find out, out of the blue, that one of my favorite actors is dead. It's a complete shame, and depressing as hell ... and then to see so many people all over the Internet attacking him posthumously with things like "Well, he was a druggie, that's what he gets" - come on, ALL the evidence points to an accidental overdose due to stress and severe jet lag with sleeping pills, and because people see "pills" they assume he was an addict and shit on him for it. Damn it, people, he was a good person, the poster-boy for what a true actor should be both on AND off the set ... and still people condemn him for no good reason. (Note that this isn't directed at anyone here)

This will cast a dark cloud over "The Dark Knight," but it seems as if the performance he delivered will blow everyone away ... I just hope we can all enjoy it for what it is, and not out of pity because of his untimely, unfortunate passage.

Rest in peace, Heath. It's a shame you had to leave us so soon.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Thread
Time
I think the ending of this episode with the Terminator regrowing his skin has sold me for the rest of the season at least, but there are other aspects that are bothering me quite a bit, such as WTF happened to Sarah Connor between T2 and this that she's such a puss about killing someone, and why is "Cameron" all of a sudden so bad at blending in when she was very normal as a "person" at the beginning of the pilot?
