Ugh... my computer can't even do torrents. Advice, anyone?

Why can't your computer do torrents? What ISP do you use?

Other advice would be to try to use the newsgroup instructions Carbonunit so graciously provided. Either use BitTorrent, which isn't that hard to figure out, or use the newsgroups, or hope some kind soul will upload it to Rapidshare. Other than those three options, you'd have to get the DVD yourself via a PIF chain, torrent, Rapidshare, or newsgroups to rip it to iPod format.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt - my roommate had all his movies on his computer in iPod format so he could put it on his iPod and plug that into the TV, rather than carrying around an enormous DVD collection (and I mean enormous - this guy had 2 and a half terabytes worth of movies that were on average 1-1.5 gigs each).

My suggestion - download the DVD-5 or DVD-9 and convert it yourself with HandBrake.

There was a Special Edition widescreen VHS in 1999/2000 (whenever the VHS'es were released) that came in a big box with a sample of the Art of Episode I book and a 35mm film strip of four frames or so, along with the VHS tape of the widescreen theatrical version of Episode I.

--edit--

And yes, it was an American, US NTSC VHS release.

Slightly off topic, but I have to vent.

RapidShare's free download service (which I need to use to get MoveAlong's disc label) now makes you type in a security code to download. Fine by me.

But that's not all - you have to type in only the letters with a cat in them. No joke. Problem is, they ALL look like they have a cat in them to me! WTF? This is getting out of hand ... it's absolutely ridiculous.

I didn't really think any of the extra scenes were pointless until the ROTK EE came out - THAT had some highly unnecessary additions.

Back to your project, it sounds quite interesting - what did you use to edit with?

Oh, and I must have read a bit faster than I thought before - just noticed you mentioned "extended editions" in you first post. My mistake.

I thought it lived up to the standards set by "Doom" and "Crusade," which, in my humble opinion, aren't very high standards, especially considering how perfect "Raiders" is. All three sequels were about 50/50 on the "Holy shit was that awesome!" moments versus the groan-inducing, cringe-worthy moments (though KOTCS's climax is arguably one of the lowest points of the series, right up there with the first 30 minutes of "Doom" or the book-burning sequence of "Crusade").

Hey, it's cool - digital filmmaking *is* getting bigger (unfortunately, in my opinion). Here at Columbia, currently only Production I and Image Design actually cut on film, but next semester Production I is moving to digital editing. We'll still shoot on film in all film production classes, but editing will be done on computers, which is how it's done 99% of the time in the industry anyway, which is, really, a shame. I enjoyed it while it lasted, and I hope someday in the future when I'm working in the industry, a director will bring me on as an editor and want to cut on film. Not likely, but one can dream.

Oh, and, a quick tidbit - Spielberg still cuts on film, not computers like everyone else, so even though KOTCS was stuffed full of CGI, it was still edited with celluloid workprints. Or so I've been told.

what i meant was all the college kids who will eventually make their way into the industry shoot on video not film and cut on a computer, most likely a mac.

I go to Columbia College Chicago's film school, for film editing.

A couple weeks ago I finished my final film for Production I.

We shot on 16mm black & white reversal stock using an old Bolex hand-crank silent camera.

We edited using a razor blade, block, MovieScop, and tape. No computers involved at all.

Don't be so quick to shit on modern filmmaking, and don't talk about things you don't really know as if they're fact - film is VERY much alive, complete digital takeover is decades away, if ever at all.

A bit off-topic, but you might get out of this Lego group I made:

That's awesome - I especially like Farnsworth :-D

Haven't been able to locate the disc as yet, but I've still got a few places I haven't checked.

----EDIT-----

Found it - it's in the form of a 665.2 MB .wav file. I don't exactly know how to go about doing this - Comcast is too unforgiving to upload it as a torrent, and I don't think I'd be able to do Rapidshare. Is there anything free I can use to upload a file just shy of 1 GB? And if I have to do it in chunks, how can I .RAR a file into multiple parts on a Mac to make it readable on both Macs and PCs?

If it'd be easier to send out physical copies and you want one, PM me and we can work something out, if I can't figure out how to upload the file.

I don't even think either of the Indy sequels were all that good, or necessary, to be completely honest. All three films with "Indiana Jones" in the title are inferior popcorn flicks that tried to build a film around the established Jones character of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," instead of having a truly compelling story that the character could take part in. The way I look at it, there's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," then there's a trilogy of adventure films that happen to have Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in them with a few ties to his adventures in "Raiders." And KOTCS lived up to my views on that matter.

I have the widescreen VHS of the OTV. It's gathering dust in the basement, so it may have degraded somewhat with improper storing, but at the same time I doubt it's a good source to work from anyway.

And there's a set on Demonoid that's the new 2006 "GOUT" set converted to anamorphic, but "Emprie" has yet to be uploaded, and I don't think the subs are hard-encoded. It'll be the best-looking release of the original theatrical versions of SW, ESB and ROTJ you can find until the X0 project is finished (which will be quite a while from the look of it). If you PM me I can provide you with links to the torrents.

Wasn't the original line "The son of Skywalker," or am I thinking of a different part? (I've only seen the 2004 version once, when I bought it and before I hocked it, and the SE discs of my GOUT collection are decomposing in a landfill right now, so I have no way to look to see what was changed).

I'm sorry but for those of you who have seen it already, your reports don't seem all that great....it just seems like a ho hum movie....nothing really there to grab my attention or imagination to motivate me to get up and go see the thing.....I was hoping you guys would come back with shinning reviews and say, "don't even think get off your ass and go see the thing", but that doesn't seem to be the case.....yawn.

Here's my take: It's miles better than ANY of the prequels ever hoped to be. If you're worried about Indiana Jones being ruined by this film, don't be. I highly recommend it if you liked "Last Crusade" - they're both very fun movies, but can't live up to what came before (I won't touch "Temple of Doom" here).

And I'm in total agreement on the music - NO recognizable theme for the Commies, nor for the Skulls, or even Mutt - it seemed like a thrown-together mess of "Raiders" cues that Williams may potentially have supervised. Very disappointed in that regard.

Just got back from KOTCS.

-----SPOILERS AHEAD------

The Good:
- Harrison Ford can act again! Thank God, I thought we'd lost him for a bit there.
- Surprisingly, Shia LaBeouf (did I spell that right) was pretty awesome as well.
- It very much felt like an Indy movie
- The whole truck/boat car chase sequence was damned awesome
- Nice to see Indy's class is still full of hot teenage girls
- The Crystal Skull that forms the centerpiece of the movie is actually kinda cool, it feels a lot like the Shankara Stones from TOD.
- John Hurt's Oxley is fantastic.
- The "interrogation" scene.
- The whole catacombs/graveyard sequence was very creepy
- Best use of Indy's fear of snakes since Raiders' Well of Souls (still doesn't hold a candle to that, though)

The 'Meh':
- The warehouse sequence, especially seeing the Ark again. Not really necessary, and it kinda felt contrived.
- Indy miraculously getting his job back PLUS a promotion at the end. Huh?
- The wedding.
- Marion's return - don't get me wrong, Karen Allen is great, but she doesn't DO anything but tell Indy that Mutt is his son (though her contribution to the aforementioned truck chase sequence was awesome)
- The climax. I didn't have as big a problem with it as my friends did, but it was a bit over-CG'ed, and no real Raiders- or Crusade-esque face melting-like coolness to it.
- Aliens (sorry, "inter-dimensional beings"). Not bad, per se, and it's really just the ending that has the problem.
- The Crystal Skulls (I know, it's in the "good" section too). We never really get a sense of WHY it's so important to get them together, why the unknown "power" is supposed to be so good. Even 'Raiders' had that - we knew WHY they wanted the Ark, even if we didn't know what its true power was.
- Spalko. Don't get me wrong, Cate Blanchett was awesome, but as she's written, the character ties with Donovan as the worst villain of the series.

The Bad:
- Mutt's Tarzan scene.
- The nuclear blast/refrigerator escape.
- Shia almost donning the hat at the end.
- Some CGI moments (especially the end)
- No side adventure at the opening. In fact, I don't even know how the hell Indy managed to get in the trunk of Spalko's car to begin with. Not really detrimental to the overall story, but still kind of disconcerting.
- I couldn't detect ANY real new music. It felt like a "Greatest Hits of Indiana Jones" score, mostly drawn from Raiders. No theme for the Ruskies? Really? What about Mutt? Or Oxley? Or the Skulls?
- What they did to Brody's statue.

-----END SPOILERS-----

Yeah, I'm nitpicking a lot. I enjoyed it a LOT more than my list might let on, those are just some initial thoughts. I might think of more on a repeat viewing or over time, but as it stands, I'd give the movie a B-.

Best to least:

1. "Raiders" (A+)
2. "Last Crusade" (B-)
3. "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (B-)
4. "Temple of Doom" (C)

"Crusade" and "Kingdom" are vying very closely for the #2 spot. I might have to consider them tied, myself. All in all, a very worthy - and not at all franchise-ruining - addition to the "Indiana Jones" saga.
