So, would this be an accurate breakdown of what mixes are available on what laserdiscs?  (All listed below are NOT time compressed)

Is this an accurate list?

It's looking pretty good.  I'll echo the sentiment that others have said - it's a bit too over-saturated IMO.  In particular, the scene in the asteroid field - all the in-cockpit shots just look a little "overcooked," specifically in saturation, but overall and in general as well.  It just feels like it's over-filtered.

I'd say ease up on the saturation and sharpening filters, and you'll have a damn fine product on your hands :-)

Okay.  I’ve never been able to get a straight answer to these questions, so I figured I’d start a new thread and ask:

1. Is there a difference between the 1980 theatrical stereo and 1985 laserdisc stereo mixes for Empire?

2. Is the 1980 theatrical stereo for Empire available on a LD release that isn’t time compressed?

3. Was Jedi remixed in 1985?  Or in 1993 for that matter?

4. Are the 1983 theatrical stereo and 1985 LD remix available for Jedi (if there’s any difference between the 1983/1985/1993 versions at all)?

Does anyone have WAV files of the 1980 Empire stereo mix, the 1983 Jedi stereo mix, and the 1985 mixes for both Empire and Jedi?

I have the 1993 mixes in uncompressed WAV form for all 3 movies, and I have the 1977 mono, 1977 stereo, and 1985 stereo mixes for Star Wars, but I only have the 1993 mixes for ESB and ROTJ.  So if anyone has the mixes mentioned above, please let me know (and if you have a 1985 Star Wars mix synchronized to the GOUT, let me know as well, because I only have the 3-part un-synced LD rip).

I’m planning on uploading (somewhere) a collection containing every possible pre-SE audio mix for all three movies, but I can’t really do this until I actually have all of them.

My assumption would be that restraining bolts are a quick and dirty way of bypassing the droids' current programming, programming that might make it impossible for, say, Luke to give an order to a droid legally owned by the Royal House of Alderaan.  The restraining bolt is like a DRM crack for droids.

Interesting - I haven't seen the SE in ages, and (obviously) never the 70mm version, so I never knew the voice had changed.  I've always known it to be the "original" version.

I like Forrest Gump, but agree that it's overrated.

I did, however, love The Departed, so I can't even remotely agree with you there (though Goodfellas is better, and Casino is better than both).

And Independence Day is a guilty pleasure, like The Day After Tomorrow and probably 2012.  Oh, Roland Emmerich ... I still think his only legitimately decent film has been Stargate, but most of his others are still guilty pleasures of mine (minus fucking Godzilla ... )

No, it's not possible to "scan" any fan edit, since none of them are done on film.  As for ANH:R, it was done at DVD resolution, so it's not even possible to make that HD.  He didn't use an HD broadcast for ANH, he just used the official DVD.

ESB will be 720p, from the German HD broadcast, not 1080p because it's just too big to work with and some effects back when he was attempting 1080p didn't turn out so great because the increased resolution limited what he could use (the wampa tusk test comes to mind).

2K is slightly better than 1080p resolution, and 4k is significantly better resolution than 2k.

SD (NTSC): 720x480 (width first, height second, and this uses non-square pixels - with square pixels, a true 4:3 image would be 640x480)
720p: 1280x720
1080p: 1920x1080
2K: 2048×1556 (full-aperture)
4K: 4096x3112 (full-aperture)

The Dark Knight had its 35mm scenes scanned at 4K and its IMAX (70mm) scenes scanned at 8K for its online edit.  Some other films have been scanned at 8K for Blu-Ray release (Baraka, The Wizard of Oz), though I imagine that's mainly for archival purposes and "future-proofing" than anything, since Blu-Ray tops off at 1080p.

But things that are done digitally are limited to the highest resolution that was worked with.  If I'm not mistaken, AOTC and ROTS were shot with 1080p digital cameras, so they'll never be able to look better than Blu-Ray.  Though I could be mistaken, as most/all digitally-shot films today are at least shot at 2K, and I don't think George is *that* big of an idiot.

That's interesting, because while I've heard that for Empire, I've also heard that Lucas basically directed Jedi and used Marquand as a figurehead.  Or at least, that he had so much control over what Marquand did that he basically directed it.

That's the digital noise reduction that Lucasfilm did in the early 90s.  It's inherent on the transfer, and is impossible to get rid of.  The only way you're going to get rid of this is to find a good-quality capture of the pre-1993 laserdiscs.  Or wait for the X0 project to be finished (uses the best of both transfers).

That's supposedly what happened.  But I think it's bullshit, and I think the o-neg of the theatrical cuts still exist.  And even if they don't, there's the Library of Congress prints, and Lucas' 3-strip archival prints that he's admitted to keeping in the Lucasfilm vaults (he said they used them for color timing in 1997).

And it's very possible to print CGI to film - that's how the majority of films are done nowadays.  The film is shot, scanned in at compressed SD, edited (the "offline" edit), then the shots that were used in the edit are rescanned at 2k or 4k, the effects added at that resolution, then it's all color timed, audio mixed, titles and such rendered at 2/4k and added in, and then you have a 2k or 4k uncompressed master file (the "online" edit).  Then that is printed to film.  So most movies nowadays have a concrete maximum resolution of 2k or 4k, depending on which online resolution was used.

IIRC, Anchorhead loved the original SW, saw ESB and didn't like it much, and hasn't seen ROTJ, TPM, AOTC, or ROTS.  Do I have that right, or is my memory failing me (again)?

God damn I forgot how bad that "Noooooooo!" was ... yes, it's been that long since I've seen the theatrical version of ROTS.  4 years, to be exact.

The joke was that the movie wasn't good, and since the name of the thread is "how to make certain movie series perfect," saying it never happened makes the series perfect.

There's a difference between having confidence that Adywan can pull off something great and blindly agreeing with everything he does just because he's somehow acquired a religious following.

But I do agree that once Adywan has said "This is the way it is, I'm not changing my mind," we shouldn't keep beating a dead horse.  Like the Blue/Grey TIE Fighter Debate, or the Red AT-AT Window Debate, or constant arguing about Boba Fett's voice ...

The way I look at it:

Raiders of the Lost Ark - standalone film

Temple of Doom, Last Crusade, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - its own separate film trilogy

and:

Back to the Future - standalone film

Back to the Future Parts II & III - its own separate anthology.  Though this would be easier if the ending of I didn't spill over into II.

And I still don't get the hate for Alien 3 - I quite enjoyed it, especially the extended version.  But Resurrection is a steaming pile of shit.
