Textbook Fail (SE shots used in matte artwork section)
Time

I remember it being a good book (though the only two film-related books I've kept have been 'The Filmmaker's Handbook,' which is like a Bible for anyone who's starting out in film; and 'In the Blink of an Eye,' a fantastic book on editing written by Walter Murch), but I don't remember seeing the Star Wars thing in there.  I may have skimmed over it, or it might have been an older edition that didn't have that picture.  It was only two years ago, though ... I really don't remember.

Info Wanted: Anyone do a lossless capture of the theatrical 35mm mix of Empire Strikes Back?
Time

I have the ac3 track from DJ's disc.  I haven't listened to it yet, but it's from that LD, so it *should* be the theatrical stereo mix.

Unfortunately, as you pointed out, it isn't lossless.

I'd also be very interested in obtaining a lossless WAV/FLAC/whatever of the theatrical 1980 ESB, 1985 remix ESB, theatrical 1983 Jedi and 1985 remix Jedi (if that even exists).  I still can't find out if the 1993 DC/Faces Jedi is any different from the 1983 or 1985 Jedi mixes (assuming, again, that there was a 1985 Jedi mix).

Walmart,Best Buy,and others Blu-ray Specials

I agree for the most part, but what's interesting to me is that when I saw the opening sequence in 1.33:1 on HBO recently, they used a lot more of the frame than the Blu-Ray did - they only cropped a bit off the sides.

I'd like to know if the full-frame DVD did the same thing, because I'd like to make a DVD that shifts from 2.39:1 to 1.33:1 - still cropped a bit, but I feel (on a large 4:3 TV, anyway) that would mimic the feel of the IMAX presentation much better.  But it'd be a 4:3 DVD instead of a 16:9, and definitely wouldn't be in HD.

I'd just use the IMAX footage bonus feature on the DVD, but that A) pillarboxes it to fit in a 16:9 frame, and B) only includes the six "major" sequences, and not the other shots that were done in IMAX that are peppered throughout the film (including the scene where Alfred burns the letter, if I recall, which is quite sad).

The great Flipper debate?

Enlighten me!

The "Great Flipper Debate" was an argument (that I, sadly, missed out on being a part of) during the production of ANH:R about whether the severed arm in the cantina should be a flipper (since the alien's hand, as seen earlier in the scene, was a "flipper") or a human hand (since Dr. Evazan was the one holding the gun, not the alien) - either way, the original element of the fuzzy hand had to go since there was no one in the scene with a hand like that.

The DVD-5 of Revisited has a flipper, but the DVD-9 has a human hand (which is, actually, Adywan's own hand).

That's about all I know - I wasn't part of the actual debate, as I said, but I think I got the gist of the argument.

What is this, and where can I find one today?
Time

I started this thread for an entirely different purpose earlier, but resolved that problem.  Now, since I have a different one, I didn't see the point in starting a whole new thread when I could just edit this one!

So anyway, I've been trying to fix my mom's old Atari 2600 (the only gaming system I had until I got the original PlayStation when I was 11 or so).  I've taken it to a friend of mine, whose dad checked all the internal components, and it's all fine.

The problem seems to lie in the video out.  There's a single RCA-style cable coming out of the 2600, which (apparently) carries both audio and video.  This cable leads to a transformer/splitter of some kind, that I've decided has to be the problem.

Here's what it looks like today:

As you can (kinda) see, the RCA (or whatever it is) cable goes in the top:

and then there are two outputs.  The one on the bottom:

attaches to this little thing that converts it to a standard coaxial output:

But the other output looks like this now (it's attached to the unit):

This part was apparently duct-taped to this little doohickey at one point, as well:

So my assumption is that I just need to get a new one of these

so I can attach that first converter-thing (that outputs to coaxial), and then it should work?

I'm trying to provide as much information as I can because I really don't know what the hell I'm talking about.  I just want to be able to get this old hunk of junk to work again.

So does anyone know what this item is called, and where I can get one today?  I'd greatly appreciate it!

Interesting article on Summer films
Time

Just got back from District 9 - it was about a hundred different kinds of amazing.  It might just be the high of seeing it for the first time, but I'll go out on a limb and say that it's easily the best action sci-fi film I've ever seen - yes, it's better than Aliens.  And the CG never once stood out to me as being CG, which is extraordinarily rare these days.

I highly recommend it to everyone here.  Amazing.

HALO movie

While I would have liked to see Peter Jackson's and Neill Blomkamp's take on Halo (check out the demo that Blomkamp made while he was still attached to direct and Jackson was still attached to produce - would have been sweeeeet), the failure of that project caused Jackson to help Blomkamp get District 9 made ... and by all accounts, District 9 looks fantastic.  I'm going to see it at midnight tonight.

Star Wars Saga on Blu-ray (a joint venture project)
Time

The music in the surround channels throughout ANH is reversed, and the Death Star attack has one music cue that's dialed down so low it's basically inaudible.  Plus the dialogue audio levels are all over the place throughout the film.  Simply put, the 2004 audio is a mess.

One of these days, I'd like to go through it and fix all the problems while preserving the legitimate "deliberate creative decisions" (the altered Krayt dragon call, Threepio's "We've stopped!", the stormtrooper's "There's no one here!", the static in the THX 1138 scene, etc.) unique to the 2004 version.  But then I remember how little I care about the 2004 SE, and how much I hate most of the changes I'd be preserving ...
