Here's my continued work on ROTJ: Fan-O-Matic:

I'm feeling more and more like my future ROTJ edit will be little more than a full-scale refinement of your ideas in these 'Fan-O-Matic' clips.  Great work - that whole sequence felt more Star Wars-y to me than it ever has in the past!

The Phantom Menace -Theatrical Version - NTSC DVD- ADYWAN - NOW AVAILABLE
Time

The audio on the initial release appears to be from a bootleg laserdisc and doesn't represent the true 5.1 track that everyone loves so much from the official LD.  Ady managed to get a hold of the official LD and was ripping the audio, but started to have trouble with his LD player - since then, we haven't heard anything.  But he is (to my knowledge) planning on releasing a V2 with the proper audio.

I wouldn't mind seeing blood on the Rancor in that shot, but I dunno about it being green.  Anything to make ROTJ a bit more mature.  And, really, how could it not bleed in that situation?

--edit--

And I'd also like to throw in my two cents and say that I agree with what many have said here - the Rancor scene was perhaps the only thing about the 2004 editions that I prefer over any other version, and beyond color correction, I don't think anything new needs to be done to the scene (minus the blood in the shot above).

Boba Fett is no longer in 'Return of The Jedi'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYM_4GcFeQQ

I wanted to bring this back to the front due to the excellent commissioned work here by Davnes.  Not only did he cut Fett like I suggested, he also did some of the other tweaks we've mentioned on the list, and I think its the better for it.  I think things are tighter (a bit too tight in places, but could be fixed) and flow pretty nicely.  With some more work, I think it could be done and no one would know until after its over!

MORE THOUGHTS: still don't like Oola in the pit.  Slows things down.  And why does Sy look the wrong direction for the "uh oh"?  The crops could work with a 1080p source, but masking would work wonders.

Agreed 100%.  This totally proves to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there is absolutely no reason for Boba Fett to be in the film.  Great work, Davnes!

And yeah, I hate the Oolah-in-the-pit scene, too ...

Questions about audio mixes
Time

Here are ALL the English-language (domestic) audio mixes for Star Wars:

Theatrical (1977) Mixes:
- 1.0 Mono (1977 35mm Theatrical and some early-1980s TV broadcasts ONLY)
- 2.0 Stereo (1977, 1981 35mm Theatrical, early laserdiscs)
- 4.2 Six-Track (1977 70mm Theatrical ONLY)
Home Video (Pre-SE) Mixes:
- 1985 2.0 Stereo (remixed by Ben Burtt; included on early 1990s VHS tapes and mid- to late-80s laserdiscs, including Japanese Special Collection)
- 1993 2.0 Stereo (downmix of the 4.2 six-track with newly-added sound effects; included on 1993 Definitive Colleciton/1995 'Faces' laserdiscs, 'Faces' VHS, and 2006 Trilogy 'Bonus Discs')
SE Mixes
- 1997 5.1 Surround (theatrical SE mix, included on Japanese laserdiscs)
- 2004 5.1 Surround (SE DVD mix, with many technical problems - also included on Disc 1 of 2006 DVDs)

There.  If I've gotten anything wrong, let me know, but I think that's it.  I have the 1977 mono, 1977 stereo, and 1993 stereo in WAV format synched to the GOUT discs, and the 1985 stereo that hasn't been synched to anything yet.

What I can't get a good answer for is whether or not Empire and Jedi were remixed in 1985 (I know Empire was in 1993, since there's a sound effect missing in the 1993 mix), or if Jedi was in 1993.  And if the 1983/1985 mixes, if they exist, are available anywhere for Jedi (it's been deduced where the 1980 Empire mix would have to be if it's different from the 1985).

--edit--

Just noticed I posted pretty much exactly what Hairy Hen did.  Sorry about that - I've been battling a pretty bad cold for the past couple days, I'm not as observant as I should be.

Help Wanted: Original Jabba footage - HELP NEEDED
Time

No, it was Greedo.  It's what was shot on set, that was later re-written and re-worked in post after the Jabba scene was cut.

The only differences were in Greedo's dialogue, and one or two lines of Han's that were taken out completely, and it didn't have the "Even I get boarded sometimes" line (which was lifted from the Jabba scene).  The scene was re-written in the script when they made the change (after shooting).

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!

saw lawrence of arabia in 70mm at the cinerama in seattle in recent years, so that shit is still goin' on.

(and was AMAZING by the way)

Agreed.  Saw it at the Music Box in Chicago (not a huge screen, sadly), and it blew my mind.  It made me sad that 35mm is the standard (and that digital is slowly replacing it) - if only 70mm were less expensive ...

Stuff about the original releases of ANH, with what a book says (early variations in ANH)
Time

Oh yeah, I forgot that the ".44 Magnum" thing came from the mono mix ... I'm willing to overlook it for the other aspects that are (in my opinion) vastly superior.  I may look into fixing the blaster sound for my Star Wars edit - it's definitely evolved beyond the point of staying faithful to the mono mix.

And I knew that the six-track mix was for 70mm screenings, I just didn't know if it was considered more or less complete and "final" than the stereo or mono mixes.

Also, it's my impression that there weren't any pre-85 laserdiscs and that 85 was the start of ANH on laserdisc.

This isn't true - the 1977 theatrical stereo is available on one non-time-compressed and several time-compressed laserdiscs.  The 1980 theatrical Empire mix is also available on laserdisc (Dark_Jedi recently ripped it and is working on synchronizing it to the GOUT).  I have no idea if the Jedi 1983 theatrical mix is available on laserdisc.  Or if it was remixed in 1985.  Or 1993 for that matter ...

From what I've heard, the stereo mixes were made rather quickly, so they would have a stereo mix and could fold it down to mono if necessary.  If they'd made the mono mix first and run out of time, they wouldn't have had a stereo mix at all (which, IIRC, was advertised quite clearly on the posters).  So they got the stereo mix done quickly so it would be done, then spent more time on the mono mix to perfect it since that was what most people would see.  I'm not too sure where the six-track fit into all this, though.

And I've heard the mono mix (I have it if you'd like me to send you the links, Gaff) - it's fantastic, and (in my opinion) superior to the stereo mixes I've heard.  I have never heard the 1977 theatrical stereo, though, just the 1985 and 1993 mixes (though I have all three).

The mouse droid thing is unverifiable, and thus largely considered to be bullshit.

The Beru voice is either dubbed by a different actress, or a different take of the same actress was used, in the 1977 mono version.  The 1977 stereo, 70mm six-track, 1985 remix, 1993 remix, 1997 SE mix, and 2004 SE remix all use the same take/voice, but the mono mix uses a different one.

None of the mixes use the actress' real voice.

And the mono mix was the last one made, and the one made with the most attention to detail and care, since it was the version that the majority of the country would see.  But (like the Beatles' albums), since "mono" has since become a dirty word, the stereo versions have been used since, despite the fact that they weren't considered the "real" version at the time.

And Lucas has made changes prior to the SE - he added Episode IV: A New Hope and reformatted the crawl in 1981, and he (possibly) changed the brightness of the Artoo-in-the-canyon scene (to make it look slightly darker) in 1993 for the Definitive Collection laserdisc, though this is unconfirmed - it's possible that prior releases were incorrectly color timed, as we don't have a reference to compare them to.

that's where I'll be posting it

Unless space runs out, then I'll have to get back with heileman about uploading it

thanks

Are discs 1 and 2 of 'Jurassic Park' uploaded somewhere else?  I'd love to get my hands on those ... (downloading disc 3 at the moment, haven't gotten a chance to have a listen or even see what's on it yet)

---EDIT---

Nevermind, it would appear that the "Disc 3" download is the whole thing.  What were the first two discs, then?

The Beatles 2009 Remasters
Time

Listening to the mono Sgt. Pepper remaster right now.  It's simply stunning.  That's all I can say, really ... it totally renders the Ebbetts disc obsolete in every way.  These remasters get a huge thumbs up from me, though I still wish the stereo versions hadn't been treated to as much peak limiting as they have.  The monos (based on Pepper, at least) are simply flawless, though.
