THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

I take the theatrical cut is not available anywhere (?)

You're correct.  The only version available on DVD/Blu-Ray is George Lucas' 2004 "Director's Cut," and the only version available on VHS and Laserdisc is the 1977 "Original" Cut.  The 1971 Theatrical Cut has never been made available on home video in any format (to my knowledge).

Nope, you just have to be anti-American, or a pacifist, or and extreme leftist.

What's wrong with being a pacifist or an extreme leftist?  I'd go so far as to say what's wrong with being Anti-American, but then again, I don't have the same idea of "patriotism" as most.  Why should I have to be "pro-American" just because I was born here?

I dislike that our national anthem (Star Spangled Banner) is all about war.  "America the Beautiful" is a much more fitting anthem, with a much more positive message.

seeing as we fought a war to obtain our country, I think its fitting.

True, but that doesn't mean we have to have an anthem that seems to glorify war.

I don't think it glorifies war in general.   Its glorifies our victory in one battle.   It glorifies the fact that after the battle, our flag was still flying.   I see no need to politically correct our National Anthem.

Well, I do.  And I'm saying this as someone who's generally against "political correctness."

I also strongly believe that "under God" should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance, and "In God We Trust" be taken off of our money (though the latter is close to impossible, so I'll let that one slide).  And that we shouldn't have so many hangups about "disrespecting" the flag - it's just a flag, for fuck's sake.

And just because it's been the national anthem for years doesn't mean we can't change it.  That seems to be a very stubborn way of thinking to me, like if someone in 1860 said that we shouldn't abolish slavery just because it had always been that way.  (I know they're two radically different things, I'm just trying to make a point.)

Seeing the Saga in order - a review by a first-time viewer....
Time

I won't say that the 4-5-1-2-3-6 method has no merits.  It's interesting, and a lot of the arguments for it are valid.

However, for someone who's never before seen Star Wars, I'd have to say that there is only one way to show it to them:

  1. Star Wars (1977 or 1981 version)
  2. Empire (1980 version)
  3. Jedi (1983 version)
  4. Whatever the hell you want to watch after that, if any at all.

And my #4 means that, if after watching those three, they want to watch the prequels, great, go for it.  If they want to watch the 1997 or 2004 SE's, go for it.  If they want to watch the Clone Wars cartoon series (either one), go for it.

My point is, the originals should be seen first by anyone who's never seen the films.  That's how I watched them, and that's the only way they could be watched for 14 years.

Saying you should watch them in any other order is like saying you should read Brian Herbert's Dune prequels before you read Frank Herbert's original novel.  It just doesn't work.

I think the 4-5-1-2-3-6 order should only be used once someone has seen all the films, and wants to watch them in a new perspective.  In that context, it's a great method.  I'd never suggest that someone who's never seen any of them should watch them that way, though.

There must be a way of altering the PT to keep all the surprises intact (do we even need to see Yoda in the PT? He could be an oft mentioned but never seen Jedi master of great power so when we see him ESB it intensifies the physical incongruity).

This would be best done by completely remaking the PT, in my opinion.  And in such a remake (if I were to write it), Yoda would never be seen, Palpatine would never be seen with a lightsaber, and Jedi Knights and Jedi Masters would be two different things, not different ranks of the same thing.

Among a great many other differences, such as there being more than one Clone War.

Which order to watch the films?? - Dilemma!!!
Time

Why GOUT for ESB when Adywan has released a wonderful, high-quality 1980 theatrical reconstruction DVD?  I'd highly recommend that over the GOUT.  And I'd definitely recommend it over OCPmovie's crappy "Classic Editions" (made before the GOUT came out).

My recommendations:

ANH: Dark_Jedi's GOUT (whichever version you can get, but V3 once it's out)

ESB: Adywan's 1980 theatrical reconstruction OR Dark_Jedi's GOUT V3 when it's out

ROTJ: Dark_Jedi's GOUT (V3 when it's out), or Harmy's 1983 theatrical reconstruction when it's out.

Honestly, I think you've overhyped yourself to the point where it won't be scary to you.  Personally, I've never found it particularly scary.

Then again, I was an atheist long before I saw The Exorcist, so it didn't affect me in quite the same way as, say, Jaws - it's one thing to not believe in the devil, but quite another to not believe in sharks.

Just watched this one last night.  It was very good indeed, definitely one of the better ones of the season, but my favorite is still probably either the Halloween costume episode, the band candy episode, or the nightmares-become-reality episode.

Warb -

The Exorcist is a good movie, but in my opinion, it's not as scary as it's been made out to be.  That or I'm just desensitized.

Howerver, do not watch the "Version You've Never Seen" cut.  Watch the theatrical cut.  The scenes added for the VYNS cut are simply unnecessary and drag the film to a halt.  The theatrical cut is much more effective.
