James Cameron uses DVNR on Aliens Blu Ray transfer.

I had a look at the screenshots on dvdbeaver that were linked to earlier, and it seems to me that there isn't really that much difference, at least not how I'd imagined from reading this thread.

Thank you.  Everyone's comparing this to the Blade Runner Final Cut, but that clearly had drastic changes for stylistic purposes throughout.  It looks nothing like the theatrical or director's cuts at all.  The Alien and Aliens releases look pretty much the same to me.

Yes, I'm comparing the pre-Quad DVDs (with only one version of each film on the discs) to the Anthology BR set.  The color timing is pretty much the same.

What exactly is the point of Super 35?  It seems like all you're really doing is decreasing vertical resolution by shooting non-anamorphically, compared to something like Panavision.  Is it just because it's cheaper?

Yeah, it's basically because it's cheaper.  That and spherical lenses are much easier to shoot with than anamorphic lenses - they're nowhere near as long or as heavy, and they don't require as much light.  A lot of cinematographers dislike anamorphic lenses, but like the 2.39:1 frame, so for them Super 35 is the way to go.

It shoots a larger image than shooting 1.33:1 35mm, as it uses the full aperture, but it's still much less effective resolution than anamorphic.

That and the better compromise you can get when making the 1.33:1 version for TV/home video make it quite popular.

An easy way to tell while watching a 2.39:1 film is by looking at the circles of confusion in low-depth-of-field shots (that is, when the background is blurry, points of light show up as big circles).  Here's how they look when shot with an anamorphic lens (look out the window to the right at the lights in the background):

Note they're oblong, taller than a circle.

This is what they look like when shot with a spherical lens:

Circular.

Lens flares are another good giveaway, except in this case, for a spherical lens they're circular as above, but for an anamorphic lens, instead of being taller than they are wide, they're wider than they are tall.

I remember this bugged me about WALL-E, because they got the tall circles of confusion right for an anamorphic lens, but all the lens flares are circular.

It's my understanding that the DC branched version on the BR will use the new color timing for that scene, while the TC branched version will use the original color timing for that scene.  Can anyone who has the set confirm this?

Also, I downloaded a BR-rip of the Alien 3 extended cut, and I can confirm that the audio mix is much improved over the Quad set.  The best example of this is the scene where Clemens brings an unconscious Ripley into that room in the beginning, and tells the others to go look for the crashed EEV.  In the DVD version, this scene uses production audio, which is almost inaudible, requiring subtitles to be displayed.  For the BR, the actors have come in to ADR this scene (and others like it), so it sounds just as good as the rest of the film, and no longer requires subtitles.

The Dark Knight Rises: No Riddler, No 3D
Time

The Dark Knight Rises, eh?  Sounds like he could end it in an "open" way, leaving room for other directors to make further sequels using The Dark Knight ____ title scheme (as Nolan has said that this will be his last Batman film).  Maybe we'll get The Dark Knight Returns in 20-30 years with an old Christian Bale ...

Also, I don't care what anyone says, I still stand by my theory that Two-Face will come back.  My idea for how this will/could work:

- Harvey didn't die at the end of The Dark Knight, he was knocked unconscious/in a coma/whatever.
- Gordon discovered this after Batman ran off at the end of TDK
-
Gordon hid this fact from Batman, and hid Harvey deep within Arkham Asylum in an attempt to rehabilitate him, while going along with the official story that Dent died (hence the funeral scene, where no casket was seen)
- Dent's emotional state further deteriorates.  He becomes a true split personality (as he's meant to be in the comics), the "evil" side calling himself Two-Face (represented by the scarred side of the coin), while the "good" side remains Harvey Dent (represented by the "clean" side of the coin).
- Two-Face rallies the support of other Arkham inmates, and becomes their leader.
- Two-Face leads a revolt, and takes over Arkham, allowing him to escape.
- Along with his new gang, Two-Face takes over the crime underworld of Gotham, becoming the new Falcone/Maroni, only much more dangerous and unpredictable.
- The rest of the film plays out however it will play out.
- At the end it seems that Harvey has been rehabilitated, and he agrees to be locked away in Arkham once again.  Though there is a hint that the Two-Face persona may not be truly gone forever ...

This would also allow Batman to have his name cleared in the eyes of Gotham City, who at the beginning of the film believe that he killed Harvey Dent and all the other people that Harvey killed in TDK.

...Then again, this all might just be because Two-Face is my favorite Batman villain, and I absolutely hated to see him set up so well, only to be alive for 15 minutes of screen time.

Oh, and IMAX again!  Fuckin' WOO!

Idea: X-Wing Proton Torpedo Challenge
Time

I don't think seeing them launch is particularly necessary.  I would like to see the torpedoes themselves get a bit of a makeover - they don't look much like torpedoes to me (though I suppose I've never seen a proton torpedo).

Maybe you could get away with showing them launch when Red Leader(?) launches them in his failed attempt to bring down the Death Star.

Also, I wouldn't change the firing room shots for the world - they feel too much like Star Wars to me.
