Info: 1997 SE DV Broadcast Info & Discussion
Time

My sources are the V3 and 97 SE V2 test discs that DJ sent out to some of us a few months ago.  As far as I know, the video will be identical on the publicly-released 97 SE V2, whenever DJ decides to release it.

Also, to answer the color timing question - I'll be color correcting both sources, shot by shot, in FCS Color.  Haven't gotten that far yet, though, so I don't know how I'll be timing it (that is, I don't know what I'll base my color correction on).

Idea: a 1997 SE in 720p - from colour corrected copies of the 2004 HD Broadcasts?
Time

Adywan already did this with Empire, but his is in 1080p.

He's done 1080p AVCHD discs for ANH (color-corrected 2004 SE with 97 5.1, but Han shoots first), ESB (1997 SE restoration from the HD 2004, color corrected - don't know if he kept in the 04 shirt shadow/vest "fix" for Han, as he did in his 1980 theatrical DVD), and TPM (color corrected DVD/HD cut).

Don't know what his plans for Jedi are, but I'd wager it'll be the same as ESB (conform the 2004 HD to the 1997 SE and use the 1997 5.1).  He's said he won't do this until after he finishes ESB:R, though.

What did you hate about it?

You know, I don't remember exactly what it was that made me hate it so much.  I do remember that it felt far less grounded in reality than its predecessors.  I think part of it was the depiction of the monoliths, and the sheer ridiculousness of the world (didn't Clarke write in a velociraptor as a butler or something like that at one point?) that put me off.  That and the idea that you can revive a person that had been exposed to the vacuum of space for a millenium.

I've read all four books, but I barely remember 2061 and absolutely loathed 3001.  So I don't particularly care if they ever get made or not.

And to add to the thread:

Metal Gear.

Ideally, I'd like to see Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake condensed into a single Metal Gear film, followed by Metal Gear 2: The Twin Snakes (a fairly faithful adaptation of Metal Gear Solid), Metal Gear 3: Sons of Liberty (adaptation of MGS2 with some liberties taken to make sure it, you know, makes sense), Metal Gear: Outer Heaven (MGS3, Portable Ops and Peace Walker all combined and reorganized into a single prequel focusing on Big Boss), and finally Metal Gear 4: Guns of the Patriots (again, an adaptation of MGS4 with some liberties taken to make it make more sense).

I seriously doubt that will happen - if we get a Metal Gear game, it'll be one of three things - a unique story outside the canon of the games, an adaptation of Metal Gear Solid, or a side story/sequel/midquel that tells a non-game story, but still takes place in the games' canon.  The first and third possibilities I wouldn't mind, but it'd bug me if they ignored MG and MG2:SS just to adapt Metal Gear Solid.

^Is it really smart to admit you've done acid? Haha.

Ha, I don't really care.  I can't get arrested now for admitting (on an Internet forum, no less) that I've done it in the past.  The only other things I have to worry about are potential bannings (a warning is more likely, and if I get one I'll personally edit all of my posts and never mention it again), and my overall reputation around here, which I, frankly, don't really care about that much.

  • Dune, done properly.  The David Lynch version looked the part (mostly), but failed in the script department, whereas the SciFi channel version got the script mostly right, but suffered from horrible set/costume design and acting.

  • Also The Dark Tower done properly.  I know they're making it now, but they're condensing 7 books into 3 movies, a 6-episode miniseries, and a single-season TV series (which is likely to be the entirety of the Wizard and Glass flashbacks), both on NBC, which makes me very concerned for the quality of the final product.

My biggest fear, other than stuff getting cut (though I honestly wouldn't mind a dramatic re-arranging/re-structuring/re-write of the last 3 books for the film versions - maybe 5 or 6 films would be enough), is the watering down of the material.  The fact that the TV projects will air on a US network worries me, but I'll be furious if the film(s) end up with a PG-13 rating.

  • Finally, His Dark Materials, re-done from scratch (which kinda sucks since the first adaptation of The Golden Compass had a great cast), with almost anyone other than the director of American Pie at the helm.
