Hey everyone, if you wanted to watch all of Star Wars in timeline order, what fan edits of the original trilogy would you recommend?

I’m talking about edits that create a middle ground between the theatrical and the special editions, tidying up any small canon inconsistencies, and some unobtrusive nods to the Dave Filoni helmed TV and streaming shows. So far, David Kaylor’s “Original Trilogy - The Final Cut” seems to fit the bill minus the Filoni nods, but are there others?

I’m particularly interested in edits that remaster and add the deleted scene where Vader is called a Sith, and age up Hayden’s force ghost in ROTJ. Ahsoka having a blink and you miss it appearance is the sort of thing I am looking for. Although not to everyone’s taste, giving Nik Sant a Captain Rex nod like in this edit is perfect for what I have in mind, but so far, this editor hasn’t uploaded a full cut of the movie.

I’m not against jumping back in and making my own, but would prefer to watch someone else’s or use one as a major starting point.

Hi! Any update?

I ask because I may have found a digitised version of the original 3D (not a modern 3D conversion) on another forum, I’ve not downloaded or compared it, but the uploader has listed it as original 3D, and they are pretty strict at how films are listed. It’s presented as side-by-side 3D, which makes me wonder if it’s from this AI upscaled YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxITnW6KPPU

Obviously, a proper 4K scan is better than the AI upscale. Does anyone have the means to do film scanning that could take this project over? (What are the 4K77-83 team doing these days? 😉)

I did this because although he is morally grey, his motivation in my edit is selfless. Similar to how the Jedi Order’s inaction towards the injustice within in the Republic was morally grey, but they remained to the Jedi Code, not acting out of hate, etc.
Remember that in The Republic, The Trade Federation is legally allowed to starve a planet even before they became associated with The Separatists. Dooku believes that the selfless path is to save the galaxy from the course it has been on for a while now, towards fascism and the dark side. Dooku wants to prevent this before it comes to pass. When said like that, it doesn’t sound very “sith” he is still a villain because of the methods he uses, but ultimately acts selflessly.

But where’s the art in that? Where’s the soul of the film? Not that AOTC has much soul to begin with.

I think the art of most camera work is not to be noticed. I noticed it, I didn’t like it, literally could make it go away by pressing one button. Does it make the film better? Eh, not really it’s not really a worthwhile change.
Would I have done it if I was editing the original for its cinematic debut? Yes. Without a doubt. That’s why I did it. I hope that explains my point of view!

I like that! But the scene transition would be bothersome. I need something to go from Yoda to Anakin’s dream sequence, it’s too unclear to go straight from Yoda to dream sequence. but I don’t know what to transition to. Do you have any suggestions? I thought maybe an establishing shot at night time of the building he is sleeping in, but would that be any better than how it is currently? What would that achieve?

I agree with the others that Vader, the Emperor and the Vader line need to be a lot more hidden and subtle, like as fans we will notice it, but I think there still be some ambiguity rather than just being totally obvious, especially if this was for someone hypothetically watching these movies for the first time in chronological order.

Agreed. I’ve got something in mind to make it more ambiguous.

I would also suggest adding a vague/blurry shot or two of actual Tusken raiders, and maybe one of their distorted roars, and maybe those images/sounds could transform into a nightmarish Vader and his breathing. I feel like since this vision is about his mother, it definitely should be more focused on what has happened to her, but with some small hints towards Vader.

I will try it out!

Also, while it doesn’t necessarily have to be the same, instead of just having the vignette around the edges, you could also try to replicate the dream effect from ROTS. Maybe if you can find some kind of smoky overlay effects, and then add a blur effect outside a circle of focus that is centerpunched on the screen. There also seems to be some sort of halo effect that distorts the colors, but I’m not sure what the best approach is to achieve that effect.

Yeah, I’ve got an idea for that. I don’t think I will try and mimic ROTS but I’m going to take inspiration.
