Idea: HD restoration of the Phantom Edits..

I still think it's the best fanedit, because even though there are others that technically did 'fix more problems', this is the only one that to me, feels like a film, and not like a mashup.

I love his commentary. Without coming across as dismissive of other excellent fan edits, Phantom Editor wanted to make a better version of George Lucas's movie, not the version he personally wanted.

This is precisely why I like the Phantom Edit the best. It improves without trying to reinvent. Every subsequent cut I've seen is too contrived for me to just watch. I've always said, the bit where Jar Jar getting zapped in the face sums up what is great about the Phantom Edit. It's still there, but he cuts away before it becomes grating.

Anyway, a HD version would clearly involve starting from scratch, but I would still like to see it done. The only change I'd like to see is replacing the phantom crawl, which in this day and age is pretty redundant.

I'd do it myself, but I don't know how, and I don't have the hardware capacity at any rate.

I often have found myself asking, "Empire is so good. How is it possible the PT turned out so bad?!" Either Collative Learning is right in that Kirshner is a genius, assisted by a team with impeccable attention to detail (i.e. the details of the hand-chopping scene in Pt 2 of his review above), or it was just dumb luck how all the elements came together the way they did. Either way, I enjoy reading Ady's explanations on his decisions and the team's efforts to preserve the integrity of the narrative. Keep up the fine work on making this great film even better!

Haha, if Kirshner is a genius, he was a genius for ONE movie. Look, the idea of director-as-author hasn't been around for ever; it's not always the case, and it certainly wasn't in the case of ESB. Clearly Kirshner had a large and positive role in the making of the film, and I sure wish he had returned for ROTJ because he likely would've helped with the performances.

That said, Lucas wrote the story and Lucas edited it (not manually, but his was the final word). He's the alpha and the omega. If there is an "auteur", it's him. But there are a ton of moving parts in these movies, and it's a collaboration, more than anything else. That's why I feel like the Revisited versions have more legitimacy than The Powers That Be give them credit for.

To be fair, I WAS just joking. It's Shaw's ghost.....already decided, ages ago. But if you want MY opinion on the best way to end ROTJ....it would be to have Luke see the ghosts at the funeral pyre instead of at the party. They smile at him, fade away, and then Han & Leia come looking for Luke....no dialogue, the music does the talking, but we clearly see that Luke tells them he has to go, and can't join them at the party, they shake hands/hug....he walks over to his X-Wing and Han & Leia go back to the party and the films ends as it does now.

I think this would have strengthened the idea that the "Returning Jedi" wasn't Luke....but THE JEDI....the order, not the individual....and Luke is off to go make that happen. Unfortunately I think Lucas had had his fill and wanted a nice unambiguous ending.

I know this should be in the JEDI WISH LIST thread, but here's an idea:

Why not have no ghosts at all?

There is nothing saying that you couldn't edit it so you start at the party, Leia goes to look for Luke, cut away with her looking pensive, cut to Luke roasting Vader's body and camera moves up to show the X-wings dropping fireworks... but instead of the shot stopping, it continues to pan up and move towards the stars, where you then edit/fade/montage into the galaxy celebration scenes.

I like this idea

Help Wanted: The Prequel Edit Problem - remove the music & sound effects without removing the dialogue...
Time

If Disney/Lucasfilm were smart/cool, they'd release Prequel "kits", with everything separated, and every shot, final cut or not. Hell, they could get crazy and release green screen alts as well. The best thing about the prequels, and Episode I in particular, is the fan edits. Part of the problem with the Phantom Menace is inherent, but another part is the imaginations of so many viewers. Fan edits allow people to at least inch it a little closer to what they wanted, and I think the powers that be should encourage this.

It's well past time to give up on the idea that TPM is equal to Episode IV, or whatever fiction Lucas, etc have been telling themselves. It's not a total failure, but it actually could be an inspiring success if they would open up the vaults for fans.

I located the Q2 one. It looks great, not sure about the opening crawl though. My preferred approach is not to re-imagine it so much as to streamline, hence my affection for the original Phantom Edit.

You'd probably like ADigitalMan's opening crawls. They're about 95% the same but streamlined a little.

And that's the fastest I've heard anybody quitting a Q2 fanedit. I usually turn them off around the 19 minute mark.

Ha, I was just checking it out. I did watch it today though. I get what the intent was, but I don't think you can de-goofy the movie that much without it becoming painfully dry.

Here's some progress I've made on TPM!
Finally something that's not very actiony.

Here's the heroes arriving at Coruscant in TPM.
This is essentially my first run-through with editing, so expect more changes and streamlining along the way.

Fwiw I thought this had a great feel to it.

Thanks. Yeah I even downloaded the MagnoliaFan one but the quality was bad. I'd gladly follow any recommendation for an edit that's along the lines of the original, ie, doesn't go TOO crazy but streamlines, etc. I also thought the garbled dialogue for the aliens in MagnoliaFan's was kind of distracting. Maybe no more so than the original terrible line readings hahaha

Idea: HD restoration of the Phantom Edits..

I'd LOVE to see an HD redo of the Phantom Edit. I just posted about this actually, as long as the original crawl is there, I'm there.

I agree there's too much Jar Jar but it's the only edit I've seen of the movie that has a consistent, cinematic rhythm. I totally understand why others have gonedeeper with their edits but it always comes out kind of clunky imho.

But Attack of the Phantom too, by all means. Though that title is silly, I'd advise just using the original titles.

I got my DVD5 from fanedit.info a long time ago. The links may be down by now, but you're welcome to check it. More likely than not if it's still available there, it might be the version you're looking for.

Man, I can't even figure out where the torrent or DL link is on that page. At any rate, what I see is the original version, from DVD I assume, my version of which at least is pretty crummy looking. And, obviously, has that dopey explanatory opening crawl.

This ongoing search of mine is ... ongoing. Any help, the more specific the better, would be appreciated. Thanks!

Info Wanted: Phantom Edit Question (sorry)
Time

I apologize if this has been covered. I tried twice to search the forum; both times it just hung up and would not work.

I was just wondering if there was a version available of the Phantom Edit, but with the original opening crawl. It seems like an obvious thing to do and I figure it must’ve been done somewhere, but I don’t know where to look. I bought the official version and I have the Edit, but I wouldn’t know the first thing about trying to combine the two. Of course, the Edit isn’t HD either.

Thanks if anyone has any information on this.

I'd just like to say as a someone who views these things with a low level of expertise and scrutiny - but a high level of interest - the first clip of the emperor scene worked great for me. I had no clue what had happened, what had been changed, etc. Didn't notice a THING!

Fwiw the star field should not move by in the background like it does, as if it's a landscape passing by.

Which part are you talking about?

I'm thinking of the Death Star battle at the end, when they often show side views of the cockpit with stars racing by like pinpricks in a curtain. I should clarify this isn't a request or me attempting to point out an error. It just bugs me because I think it looks kind of silly.

I probably should have just kept quiet, it's really a pet peeve of mine.

While technically/scientifically you are right, I think this was done for the visual aspect of establishing the speed of the spacecraft. STAR WARS (fantasy film or not) is primarily about pulling one in emotionally through the visuals.. hence the star field spinning when the Falcon jumps to hyperspace. Scientifically it would mean the Star Destroyer crew would see the Falcon corkscrew away, which would look quite silly from their perspective. From OURS though, it gives a sense of vertigo (like those tunnels in the fun houses on Halloween), which is the visual/emotional point of its use.

Oh I agree that that's why it's done, but I don't think it adds anything in the case of the fighters. And it's not consistent anyway, so maybe they couldn't make up their minds. It's not the scientific part about it that bugs me at all, it just looks funny once you think about it. Or once I think about it, anyway.

Better cut out all sound in space while you're at it...

DE

Yeah, but I LIKE the sounds. Plus there are shots in the original movies where the star field doesn't zoom by like that so it's not like it would be a wholesale change.

But if I agree with you will you please direct me to a copy of your edit? ; )
