Where the heck is he getting that 20 years figure from? We still had our VHS and Laserdisc OT versions of recent vintage back in 1997.

Didn’t the ad campaign for the last VHS / LD release state it would be the last home media release of the original versions?

I don’t believe anyone took that proclamation seriously at the time. Personally, I thought it was just a sales gimmick.

ROTJ did not…

That settles it. The big announcement at Celebration is a theatrical cut BD of Jedi only. Hence the "surprise

I think you missed the point.

Which was?

Tyr said he won’t believe the OOT is real until he’s watched the end credits. In my version, he gets to the very last scene before he discovers it’s a new SE with a single change.

As in mine. Except he actually has to watch the credits to find out.

Jones isn’t credited in the original cut of Star Wars.

As always, I’ll believe it when I have it on my screen and the end credits are rolling.

TYR: This is amazing!
TYR: Finally I’m watching an official version of the OOT!!
STAR WARS: [Luke gets a medal]
TYR: [tearing up]
STAR WARS: [Han gets a medal.]
TYR: [smiling, weeping]
STAR WARS: [Chewie still doesn’t get a medal]
TUR: [balling]
STAR WARS: [*James Earl Jones credited]
TYR: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Has anyone suggested that Disney might put out a regular Blu-ray (of either the OUT or a new master of the SE) this year and then a UHD release after 2020? They’d be able to cash in on the anniversary and have something exclusive for when Fox’s distribution deal runs out. Plus the ST will be complete by then, so it could be box set city.

That’s been a big theory of mine as well.

The timing is certainly right. They could get away with it being a 1080p-only release this year, for the 40th. Next year, not so much. But I would still hope the unaltered trilogy eventually makes it to the 4k disc format as well.

That’s the thing. . . . Disney is so late on UHD, no titles yet, including two new-release Star Wars flicks, at a time when Fox is putting B quality action/sci fi and even cheesy romantic comedies out on the format. To not have an anniversary edition of the world’s most popular movie franchise out on the latest and greatest format–especially when, as Bill Hunt notes, the floodgates have opened (bunch of old catalog titles announced this week). I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney made their debut here–and it makes sense for Fox too, could be a real format seller and great last dance for them with Star Wars. TFA and RO on the format in the lead up to TLJ is likely too, I would say.

Perhaps. But I think anyone who doesn’t think TLJ and IX will get UHD on their respective home video launch days is kidding themselves.

Well, wish and hope if you want. I’m not going to begrudge you that. But maybe busting Disney’s balls a little after 5 freaking years, especially the way Lucas was criticized, might be a little more productive than everyone just shrugging their shoulders and closing their eyes.

Well given that practically everyone here has said that they’ll hold out until Celebration/May 25, or this fall at the latest, what exactly are you so bitter against us about? I guarantee you hell will be raised against Kennedy/Lucasfilm on this site if there’s no OUT announcement by the end of May.

What was George Lucas's worst decision with the Star Wars franchise?

Another ‘bash George’ opportunity. Okay, I’ll bite. 😉

As some have said, the fact that GL has managed to make his flawed SE versions the effective ‘default’ versions of the Original Trilogy for the masses, is just the pits.

However, one of my biggest bugbears against him is his decision to do a woeful PREQUEL storyline back in 1999…instead of doing a SEQUEL trilogy first…with a much older Luke, Han, and Leia…but who all still looked in prime condition back in that year, so long after ROTJ was done with! - his damned ‘tragic fall of Anakin’ storyline could have waited, and been done anytime after that.

I’ve seen footage of Carrie being interviewed back in 1999, and she was looking really fabulous. I’ve always wished that George had continued his ‘Luke Skywalker’ storyline in some way instead of the ‘prequels’ at that point…and retrospectively, wish that even more so now, considering that Carrie was sadly unable to reach the last of the current GL-free ‘sequel’ trilogy…

To be honest, I’d find it a jarring leap to go directly from watching ROTJ (Episode 6) to then watching TFA (Episode 7) afterwards, if I was doing the chapter ‘viewing order’ - and this is due to the great leap in age difference of the characters involved at this point. But luckily for me, I’m content to watch heavily-edited versions of the Prequel Trilogy as a ‘flashback storyline’ placed inbetween the Original Trilogy and Sequel Trilogy instalments instead…as a way to ease into the ‘age’ transition much better for myself. 😃

So yeah, the fact that George DIDN’T end up doing a SEQUEL trilogy where Carrie and the gang could have featured throughout at their marvellous best (even if Harrison STILL demanded to die at some point!), is one of his worst decisions as far as I’m concerned.

you’re operating under the most likely false assumption that those movies would have been good.
