The Go-Mer-Tonic™ Thread - Today's Topic: Whose your favorite author and why?
Time
I didn't intend for this to be Gomer bashing. I think this thread has taken on an interesting discussion and it would be ashame to delude that with gomer bashing. If Gomer wants to post and debate, he of course is free to do so. If he wants to bring up a topic to debate he may. Right now I think the current topic in discussion is rather interesting and wouldn't mind hearing what others have to say.

To address ferris' addressing of my question,

I could be wrong, but I think I remember reading that McVeigh even condoned his own death. I don't remember his exact words though. Do you think his time as a soilder had anything to do with his snapping? I have heard people defend him with this argument, that it was the governments fault he learned to kill and become comfortable with it. This argument has some pretty obvious faults to it, not even including the fact that not every soldier who has been trained to kill goes around killing people.

I suppose if Oklahoma did not still support the death penalty, or if this happened in a state that did not, he would still be eating stakes and enjoying a heated cell.

I don't see how people can argue that somebody like McVeigh deserves a second chance. I don't care how uncivilized we are as a society, it just doesn't make since to save somebody like that in hopes that they may one day become a better person. In cases of mass murder with undisputed proof, I think it is silly to even argue on their behalf.

You mentioned that if you so much as misspell of word, the lawyer are all over you. This is really ashame. I know a lot of our legal crap in America really gets in the way. I know a guy who is a police officer. About two years ago an officer from his precinct was driving with his sirens on speeding toward a reported rape, and a car full of teenage girls pulled out in front of him and they crashed. Fortunately nobody was hurt badly, and the rape turned out to be a false report. The girls should have gotten in trouble for not yeilding to an emergency vehicle, but instead they sued the police. Last time I talked to my friend they were still in the middle of sorting this thing out over a year after it happened. I have known this guy for years, and usually he is a fairly up beat guy, but for the last to years he has seemed like he has been wound to the point of snapping. They have been under constant flames from everyone for what happened, and of course the local media sided with the girls.

ferris, that was a fantastic post. I had no idea you were a cop, that makes your perspective so much more valuable on things like this. You gave me a lot more to think about. Unfortunately a lot of people are too soft hearted to even consider giving the death penalty to such sexual deviants. One of my fields of study was sociology, so I have studied a lot about human behavior, and you are right, you don't change something so deeply rooted in a person as their sexuality. This is something developed at a young age, from that point on it is for the most part hardwired into their brains.

I would be interested to know what you think of the death penalty in cases like Timothy McVeigh?

"Whew, hope I didn't ruin ya'lls day with this rant. Sorry, I just have to let it out occasionally."

Not at all! Please feel free to rant in here anytime you want. I started this thread half in jest, but I truly hoped it would develop into some decent discussions, hopefully with out the circular meandering the global warming thread eventually succumed to.

EDIT:

Zombie: "But you could brainwash and control them to either engage in homosexual activities, even if they are not truely homosexual, or refrain from heterosexual activity."

In such a case, are they even really themselves any longer? That sexual deviance will always be there, tucked away some place. I know it is a very hard morality question, and not something to be taken lightly. When an animal attacks a human, it is always put down. If a wild bear attacks a person it now knows the taste of blood and will now inevitably do it a second time. This bear is now always a threat as long as it lives. There is no changing it. However, there is a distinction between human and animal, I don't feel this is something to be debated. But what is the cost of keeping this man around? How many lives has he already ruined? And how many more does he have the potential to ruin? If he is rehabilitated, reintegrated into society, and one day reverts back to his old tendancies, was it worth the effort to reintegrate him only to have him ruin another life several years down the road?

Oh so much BETTER! This thread had me laughing so hard I was almost on the floor gasping crying. Haven't had that good of a laugh in a long time!

I agree with what gaffer said earlier, though I could not find his post to quote it in this vast sea of faggoty staring contest photos. This thread is great.

Ric,

"I think ric thought Basra was a base in the UK and expected such an attack would have made big news."

I was not by any means getting upset at your comment, I was actually defending you by saying that you didn't seem to understand where Basra was. These types of attacks happen often enough,

"I've found the report weird because 1- Attacking a base is not really something easy to do on land, let alone on foot, and I haven't heard any reports of a massive base attack"

Honestly, attacking a base on land is not as uncommon as you may think. I don't believe the Iraqi terrorists have a massive supply of fighter plans around to make air attacks with. Also, with a mortar gun you can get some decent distance from your target.

"2- Google Maps is outdated and not precise enough to make any military attack any easier"

Yeah, I agree with you here. But I think they would still be accurate enough geographically and topographically to be extremely useful for strategic planning.

"By the way, loved the way you guys got offended by my comments, reminds me of that scene in Fellini's Rome in which an old man complains about Mussolini during the war and is angrily questioned by some other fellow."

Uh... okay. This isn't an issue of complaining about a dictator and being questioned for it. I know WESHALLPRESERVE can get carried away from time to time with his CAPS LOCK, he gets pretty passionate about these issues. I think the reason why he posted as he did was because he thought you were doubting that US and UK troops are being attacked in Iraq.

I think ric thought Basra was a base in the UK and expected such an attack would have made big new. I think when people talk about the war in Iraq, a lot of times they imagine our (US) armed forces marching around in heavy combat gear mowing down farmers and peasants armed with AK-47s and pitchforks, and from time to time unarmed women and children.

The fact is there are casualties on both sides. Because of the "soft tactics" we are forced to resort to (for example we used "hard tactics" on Japan, this was effective and statistically minimized casualties, while if you didn't look at the statistics you would think the bombs we dropped killed more than "soft tactics" would have, while this is in fact not the case), we are loosing people all the time. A lot more of our kids are dying out there than would have with a few effectively dropped bombs, because this is considered too harsh by the popular opinion of the world. It is the difference between picking up little bit of confetti on the floor by hand and carefully sorting though it to make sure you are only picking up certain colored confetti, rather than taking the vacuum cleaner and sucking it all up. In Japan we vacumed up a small amount of confetti in two small areas, and in the end saved countless bits of confetti of every color, while in Iraq we are cautious to only pick up the red bits of confetti while loosing much more red confetti in the long run along with small amounts of every other color (women, children, news reporters, US and other foriegn troops).

I am not sure why I took off writing about the use of exessive force to minimize long tern casualties, it just kind of struck me in the moment. It is a huge morality question actually. Is it okay to sacrifice the lives of women and children for the sake of saving lives of enemy militants and your own troops?

Back on the topic:

Things like this mortar attack are happening all the time over there. I am amazed at how little of this is covered. It seems that it is completely over looked by the media.

Yup, it has everything to do with what I thought it might have to do. It's like preteen locker room conversation. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't worse. I have a friend who works with troubled teens, and she talks about all sorts of weird fads that go around. One instance she spoke of was this thing where young teen boys grab each others testicles and gently massage them. With wacked out shit like this going on in our schools I am not sure what to think anymore.

" I think it should be a combination boot camp/work farm. "

Yeah, I really think that would really cut down the recidivism rate drastically.

EDIT: Wait a minute, Cable, if you are going to host you're suppose to play devils advocate. If you just agree with every body then there is no conflict! Without conflict this thread is destined to failure!

While I certainly don't feel Marylin Manson deserves the death penalty, I am not even sure he belongs in prison. As far as I know, the only thing he is guilty of is making music that makes my ears bleed, even when played at moderate volumes.

Okay, seriously, with the death penalty thing, it is something a lot of people have a hard time with. It is good it is reserved for extreme cases, and I think some people do get off too easy. Many of those same people who oppose the death penalty also are opposed to rough living conditions for prisoners. If it ends up that person living, while not in ideal conditions but much better conditions than a good percentage of the worlds population, then what is the point, and the families of his victims supporting him with their tax dollars. Then there is something wrong. I don't know what the current statistics on the recidivism rate is in the US currently, but it is usually shockingly high. A big part of this is, I believe, because criminals find prison comfortable and preferable to facing the real world. After their times are served, it doesn't take long for them to decide they need to return. If the purpose of prison is punishment, then this should not be the case, they ought to run toward freedom and never consider doing so much as parking in a handicap spot ever again. However, if the purpose of prison is merely a holding pen to separate criminals from the rest of society, then this is probably about right. I don't know much about prisons, but I know there are some worse than others. I think if we turn away from the death penalty, it should be in favor of a pretty rough life for the criminals. I am not talking spiked coffins, hot coals, or mutilations of any sort. But I think they should have to endure hard labor (nothing inhumane) that is productive enough to bring in some kind of revenue, which ought to be used toward supporting their stay in prison. Any income they bring that may be left over should be given to the families of the victims. Instead of using foreign labor to produce our goods, why not use the labor of death penalty level prisoners. Just a thought.

And he would be either a white American or European capitalist, and would rule over the rest. He would also be the one with the best internet and the nicest house. He would make sure that every home had a McDonald's inside of it and drank Coca-Cola. He would also broadcast all his TV channels into their homes and they would love it. He would employ the Indian population to answer his phone for him also.

Sorry WESHALLPRESERVE, didn't intend to take the point out of your post. The first part with the percentages was very interesting. It is a really interesting to think about.

In Gomer's absense, we can all take turns hosting. For today, January the 13th, I shall host. Somebody else can have it tomorrow. Hmmm, what should our topic of discussion be...

Ah, let's talk about gun control. You know there is really no reason for ANYBODY to own a gun. If you look at it logically it all makes perfect sense. I will demonstrate with a simple equation:

Killing/Murder is illegal + guns are ONLY made to kill/murder people = guns should be illegal.

See, put this way it is unarguable, guns should have never been invented in the first place. If they hadn't we wouldn't have murders. And we would all live in harmony.

Well, that's all I have. Until tomorrow, when somebody else hosts this has been the Go-Mer-Tonic™ Thread.

Pssst. Hey Nanner, maybe if we ignore the troll it'll go away.

Aleks, I know I am wasting my breath here, but honestly. What are you trying to prove? Since the beginning you have been no different from those others from your site, you just disguise it by claiming you are the voice of reason. All it takes is to go back and read this whole thread from a - z to see you were never the voice of reason and none of you had any reason to come here in the first place. There is nothing disturbing about that post. If you notice the dates it ranges from back to November and it is just our little escape during times of bordom. It is just fun joking around between friends. This issue has never been anything to do with WOW nerds wasting their time, and everything to do with self rightous, overly sensitive members of one community registering and flaming members of another community for some off handed comment made by one poster that reflected none other than his very own opinion. When the members of the invaded community made fun of the invading spammers, you suddenly took it upon yourself to prove how very wrong and immature we were for that. This whole thing was one of the most retarded things I have ever seen on the internet. Most of the members here have not even bothered to post in here because they see it for what it is. I have been very vocal because I have been snowed in for the last two days and have found this thread a particularly entertaining past time.

Aleks, you have nothing to prove and nobody to convince about anything, but yet you seem to be trying to do just that. I honestly don't understand your reasoning. You say you don't want to be around the likes of us, yet you continue to post here. Like I said before, you are welcome to stay as long as you leave the crusade at the door.

Sean is extremely prejudice against religion. This is because he used to be a Jehovah's Witness, which he believes is a real branch of Christianity. JWs, from the ones I have known and seen are much more akin to scientologists. It is very cult like, with many dark secrets. I hope nobody hear is a JW, if you are, please understand that I am basing this off my personal experience with them and am not intending to be offensive.

OOh, that was witty! I love how you are the one calling us dense. You guys are the ones spamming our forum by jousting with windmills for the honor of your radio station. The nice thing about your infantile behavior (again, 'your' in the plural. Damn the English language) is that none of us feel inclined to take any of your pithy insults seriously. When a person has such a loose grip on reality, it is hard to do anything but feel sorry for them.

It would be wise to blackout these areas from the public anyway. Since this has now been seen as a threat, it would be wise for them to act on this in at least some small way. Even replace data from those sections with very outdated data. It would still be geographically, just wouldn't be as useful for ill means.

Oh, and to address the issue of the information they already have, it would be worth it to change the place where you sleep and go to the toilet and park the light armoured rovers. If only by a small variation.
