I was looking forward to this before I saw the trailer, not so much now. Is that what a trailer is suppose to do??? Oh well, there were a lot of explosions. People like explosions. Oh, and some chick in her bra, bras are good. Sex and explosions. The two things real people go to the movies for, and something that was sorely lacking in all ST films prior to this one. This is going to be the highest grossing ST movie ever!!!

LOL, this is funny. Not surprised at all.

Heroes Producers Fired

NBC's Heroes fired co-executive producers Jesse Alexander and Jeph Loeb, who had been with the show since its first season, on Nov. 2 in a surprise shakeup, Variety reported.

The two were known to have led the day-to-day production operation under the direction of creator/executive producer Tim Kring, the trade paper reported.

Heroes has struggled in the ratings in its third season. It's understood that Alexander and Loeb were let go because of the network's frustration with the creative direction of the show, the trade paper reported. The show is also said to have been grappling with hefty budget overruns this season, which are going well beyond its already sizable $4 million per-episode price tag.

Representatives for NBC and Universal Media Studios, which produces the show, declined to comment to Variety. (NBC and Universal Media are owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.)

^Can you see life-long friendship coming out of that?

I dunno man, me and my mates have thrown some pretty good punches in each others direction in times past... for things like that, I'll wait till I see the movie to judge.

Okay, so this is what happens when I make assumptions without knowing that much about the backstory.... I shall back out of this thread now. *leaves*

No big deal, you don't have to know everything to qualify for discussion in this thread. I really don't know that much about ST myself, I guess I have seen about every episode of TOS and TNG, and all the films, but not so much of any of the other shows or the deeper lore, I find myself pretty lost and uninterested in ST fandom and nerdy details about it all.

I've only seen a few Trek episodes. Even I know it's a big frakkup to have Spock go all Midevil on Kirk. Hell, I remember an episode that implied that Spock loved Kirk as much as 1960's Trek could...

...Also, I know in that episode Spock hits Kirk but, it's only once... Not like in the Trek trailer where he's choking Kirk.... That and, Spocks inhibitions are gone from some virus in that episode. . . So, I guess that Spock gets brainwashed or, something in the Trek film...

http://urlcut.com/scool

Bit of trivia, Jay's avatar of Sulu is from that exact episode of TOS twister linked to. That was the very first episode of TOS I ever saw in my entire life, and believe it or not, I thought it was freakin awesome.

Twister, it doesn't have anything to do with brainwashing, the new movie takes place before TOS, I think what they are going for in the new movie is a twist where Kirk and Spock didn't get along when they first met. I am guessing after they go through the hardships that are the films main plot, there will be a touching moment where we will realize they have developed a deep respect for one another, which will be the beginning of a life long friendship...

Also that scene from the Naked Time that implies Spock loved Kirk as much as 1960s TV would allow, is not what you seem to think it is. Vulcans, are a highly evolved race who have evolved beyond the need to show emotion. Spock's dad is a Vulcan, but his mother is a human. That is why he is talking about having had to suppress his emotions all his life, never having told his mother he loved her, and being ashamed whenever he thinks of his friendship with Kirk. He wasn't ashamed because he had some kind of supressed romantic feelings for Kirk that he was admitting to under the influence of the virus, he had a normal strong kind of brotherly friendship many of us guys have with our closest friends. He admitted to having felt ashamed of those feelings, because his Vulcan upbringing told him he was not suppose to have those feelings at all.

Spock going medieval on Kirk wasn't a frakkup because Spock would never do that to Kirk, but because as a good overly logical little Vulcan, Spock would not loose his temper and smack anyone. Vulcans are suppose to be beyond that. Maybe the movie will try to focus on how Spock has to struggle with his human side. Which again would be contrary to not only continuity, but also to the spirit of the character,  since Spock has often expressed his confusion and difficulty in understanding humans and their emotions and why they do the things they do.

^ Exactly, they can' have it both ways! This would be like the Brosnan James Bond training the Craig James Bond as the new James Bond, and explaining that there have been many agents with the name James Bond. That is not a reboot, that would be a crazy and unnecessarily stupid way of explaination why the character is played by another actor, the time period of the story is different, and the technology is different.

Just saw the trailer, I am now slightly less looking forward to this than before. It really does feel like Smallville's answer to Star Trek. Quinto looks good as Spock in stills images, but seeing him act as Spock is unfortunate. He seems just like Sylar with a bad haircut. I suppose in J.J.'s continuity, Vulcan are not quite as emotionless as in the old continuity.

Also, aren't Vulcans suppose to age much slower, being as they have much longer lifespans? Wouldn't make sense for Kirk and Spock to look around the same age now, and to continue to look around the same age later. Kirk should technically be aging much faster, but yet Spock looks older than him in TOS.

Bond 22: Quantum of Solace
Time

"honestly, in this day and age... although still not excellent,

the bourne trilogy set the high mark....(only the first movie,

the second was a rehash, and the third was decent).."

I dunno man, I was bored to tears during the first film (also found it pretty ridiculous and dumb, not at all deep, like some people seem to feel it is), slept through the second one, and though I was perfectly awake during the third, I felt very irritated that I felt I had somehow already seen this film before.

I find it funny so many people said things like, "Flemings Bond is dead" after Casino Royale came out, when in fact CR was the closest any Bond film has ever come to one of Fleming's novels.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Thread
Time

"In the case of T2 judgement day never happened so there was no future war or any story there."

Yeah, that is how I feel about it too. I think they could have made a decent T3 and tweaked the storyline and come up with something interesting, but it certainly wasn't necessary, and that is not what they managed to do. The first movie left us knowing that these events would eventually happen, the second one left us with it having been successfully stopped. The third one was pointless and sucked to boot.

I also consider this series as separate from the others. Kind of like Planet of the Apes, I was such a sucker for the movies that I really liked the TV show, but it is really hard to make it fit logically with continuity. So what, just enjoy it and have fun. That is how I feel about TSCC too. I really don't see this fitting so well with the first two movies, but I really like it for what it is. I am also really looking forward to the new movie, probably more than any other movie I can think of at the moment. Though I am kind of afraid they are going to flood the market with Terminator and make it loose its luster, but on the other hand I felt they already took their best shot at destroying it with that third film. I hope the show continues to get better and doesn't pull a Heroes on us. It is a show I'd really like to enjoy for a long time.

Possible Star Wars Holiday Special screening in NYC!
Time

I voted for A Charlie Brown Christmas, its my favorite! ;)

Hmm, looks like our boy is kind of low in the polls at the moment. Bing Crosby looks like he's got this one by a landslide...

This is something. Surely they would not be offering to show this, if they did not have a master. Unless they just assume that it will never win, and don't realize that if it does win it will be impossible to get. Could have just been all the staff coming up with every Christmas special they could think of. Doesn't sound very professional to do something like that though.

Let's assume they do have it, and enough of us vote for it that it wins, where does that get us? Other than a chance for those who live in New York to see this one time on the big screen, preservation wise, where does it get us? I guess somebody could do a cam of this?

If we find out for sure that they do have it, I propose a bunch of us meet in New York, map at the Paley Center, and make elaborate plans for an infiltrate and snatch operation... okay kidding, kidding!

Hey, my defense was gold bikini Leia, would you have really wanted to miss out on gold bikini Leia? Screw sensical plotlines, we needed gold bikini Leia!

LOL, I think it is pretty funny that you made the same topic two times. I bet that ridiculous rescue plan caused you some kind of psychological trauma as a kid, all your problems in adult hood could probably very well be traced back to that one scene...

But yeah, the sequel to this thread far exceeded the original. I'll be looking forward to the third and final post of your "Jabba Palace rescue plan criticism" trilogy 3 years from now. Maybe in 20 years or so you could make a prequel trilogy of posts...

Ha ha, so do I. I keep a leather bound copy under my side of the bed (right next to Emily Dickinson and Fangles' translations of Homer), I'll pick it up and just read bits from whatever page I turned to before going to bed sometimes. Every now and then I will talk my wife into letting me read some to her out loud to let her hear why it is so great, and every time I do she falls asleep in just a few minutes, bores the shit out of her. To each their own.

I took it to be a case of "we're trying something different here so don't get upset when it doesn't feel like your beloved TNG". But then that's probably just me.

Actually, that is not a bad explanation for it. I can imagine enraged fans in an alternative universe screaming at their TVs, "How dare you put the Star Trek name on this pile of crap." Meanwhile in our universe fans get upset because the title was dropped. We fans are a discontent bunch. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Am I the only one who's excited for this new movie?  And who actually really likes the new Enterprise design?

Remember, this is supposed to be a reboot, is it not?  Or am I mistaken on that?

No. I am actually really looking forward to it, despite my expressed misgivings. I had no interest of going to the theater to see the new Indiana Jones movie even though I am a long time IJ fan, I am a huge Star Wars fan, and I never even made it a point to see Attack of the Clones in the theater, but I fully intend to go see this within its opening week. I suppose that says something.I am also mind numbingly thrilled (okay, that's an exaggeration) that Simeon Pegg is playing Scotty.

That is probably the one thing that bugs me the most about this movie, this thing is a "sort-of" reboot, but in the past they have hesitated to actually call it a reboot. That is why they have Nimoy to play Spock and make this a time travel thing. I would have much rather this thing be a full out reboot, forgetting all that has happened up until now, instead of using time travel as a way to make it a sequel and a reboot at once. If they wanted Nimoy in the film, a cameo as Spock's dad or an older Vulcan teacher at the academy would have been cool. They could have included Shatner in the film in this manner as well.

Spock going back in time and thus altering history into the new franchise is just too much of a nerdy fanboy kind of explaination for everything being different.

Revenge of the Sith: Awful message
Time
TheBoost said:

Anakin doesn't go bad for love. He doesn't even go bad to save Padme's life in any clear way (it's not like a special medicine is being kept from him in the Jedi Temple). He goes bad in order to achieve power to alter the natural order of things because he's unwilling to let go of his attachments. His hubris is what leads to his evil actions.

Yoda was right. Anakin needed to be willing to let go. Yoda is so right that Anakin is even the one who caused her to die. Yoda was right when he told Luke not to go to Cloud City, but Luke did it because he was afraid to lose the people he loved.

Hmm, interesting perspective. For my part, I don't think Anakin had anything like hubris. Sure he is portrayed in the films as over confident and cocky, but more often than not, I think we see Anakin questioning himself and being uncertian of things. I think his overconfidence was compensation for his self doubt. In his character I didn't see a man who wanted more than anything to be able to have great power and be able to stop people from dying for the sake of having great power, he wanted this power to protect the thing he loved so much he didn't think he could live without it. Anakin was scared of loosing the thing he held so dearly. Which is why the movie makes no sense at all.

I never saw Anakin as a very powerful person, not someone who was overly proud of himself, but someone who was disappointed in how powerless he precieved himself to be. I don't think hubris can be attributed to that kind of a character. He seems more like a loser who never came to terms with the realities of life, and gets so pissed off at the fact that people close to him might die, he goes on a 20+ year killing spree.

I think a story of hubris leading Anakin to the Dark Side would have been a much more enjoyable story that could have actually stood up under its own weight. Imagine Anakin becoming one of the most powerful Jedi of the Order. A true selfless hero who everybody loved. As his power in the force goes stronger, he craves it more and more. He has long since excelled beyond anything the Jedi masters can teach him, and he starts dabling in the secrets of the Sith. He knows it is forbidden, but he is Anakin Skywalker after all, perhaps one of the most powerful Jedi the galaxy has ever known, lesser Jedi may succumb to the seduction of the Dark Side, but not him. He could control it, tame it, bend this evil aspect of the Force and use it for good. At first he finds he can control it so well, he drops his guard, its child's play. The Dark Side of the Force is no match for the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, it is slave to him. Slowly he starts to exhibit questionable bypassing of morals. Perhaps he captures a bad guy and uses the Dark Side to bring him within an ich of his life in order to get important information from him that will save lives, after all, what is a little use of questionable methods when lives are at stake? Eventually he uses this power to do something that causes the loss of many civilian lives, but it is a time of war, and they allied themselves on the wrong side, what are a few civilian casualties in exchanged for the success of major military victory? As time goes on, Anakin's morals begin to slip more and more, but he can never admit to himself that he is becoming a slave of the Dark Side. He still believes he is in complete control, and he has become too attatched to his new found power, suddenly the power he learned from the Jedi feels pithy and pathetic, the true power of the Force lies in its dark side. He cannot let it go, and why should he? He is still the one who possesses it, it does not possess him. The other Jedi start to notice Anakin's behavior change, the man who once would go through every effort to capture enemies unharmed rather than kill them, has grown cold, now showing little regard for the lives of his own men, willing to send them on sucide missions for the sake of victory. They confront him, he denies that he has lost control, he feels they are jelous of his power. The confrontation gets heated and he looses his temper, killing one of the Jedi. He runs away, surprised at his own actions, but feeling no guilt and even justifying himself. He is kicked out of the order, if the Jedi find him, they are to kill him. It could be at this time that his wife tells him it is over, and he discovers Palpatine, a general in the Republic Navy. Palpatine could approach him and reveal to him that he is the Sith Lord the Jedi have been hunting, and that he can teach Anakin how to control his newfound powers, and how to tap even deeper into the Dark Side of the Force. Anakin doesn't see Palpatine as a bad guy, he reasons the only reason the Jedi hunt down Sith are because they are afraid of that power, but being a Sith doesn't have to mean evil. He deludes himself again and again, justifying every evil thing he does as he begins secretly helping General Palpatine rise in power, both military power and political power (perhaps he eventually declares martial law after some tradgedy, made possible by Anakin, kills many of the political leaders of the Republic, angry, the people are all to happy to hand the government over to such an experienced war hero), as he begins killing Jedi after Jedi, at first in self defense, and then by hunting for them. Evetually his old master confronts him, but he doesn't come to kill his old friend, he comes to redeem him, to bring him back to the light side. The attempt ends in heartache as he is forced to fight his friend in self defense, as the battle progresses, Obi-Wan is forced to choose between his own life or the life of his friend, and watches as the man he considered his brother plunges to his death. Now we would have an interesting story of hubris leading a hero to his fall.

(Also with the above scenario, there would be less issues coming into episode 4. While the audience would clearly see that Obi-Wan is lying to Luke about Darth Vader killing his father, the audience could sympathize with Obi-Wan. He simply does not want the boy to know his father turned bad, and that he was forced to kill his best friend. Something he deeply regrets, and blames on the corrupting power of the dark side, so instead he tells Luke Anakin's successor as Palpatine's apprentice, Darth Vader, is the one who killed him. Of course, while Obi-Wan had thought Anakin dead, sometime before the end of the prequel trilogy he would have discovered the truth, that his friend was resurrected/survived with the help of artifical body parts and the power of the dark side.)

But alas, he turns bad to save her and by doing so kills her.

That new Enterprise is a little too curvy for my taste, looks like something designed by BMW. Since it is a high tech military vessil, I like the straight lines and practicallity-over-style look. The motion picture Enterprise is the best looking to me too. This new one if going to take some getting used to, all those bulging curves makes it look like something you'd find on the shelf in an adult toy store.

I think i'm one of the 5 or 6 people in the world [sic] that actually liked 'Enterprise' [yes even before they tacked 'star trek' onto the title screen].

I always thought that was funny how they left Star Trek out of the title, it was like they were trying to hide the fact that it was Star Trek because Star Trek had become uncool. Like they wanted to trick people who didn't like Star Trek into watching it. I can see non Star Trek fans flipping through channels, "Hey, a new sci-fi show, well as long as it isn't lame Star Trek, I'll give it a go... did I just see a Klingon??? That was a Klingon! They can't fool me, this IS Star Trek!" flips channel.

It was kind of funny, because most the time you want to use your popular brand name as a selling point, not hide it.
