Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

As far as I know, no member of this community has that print though.

The sandcrawler scene in harmy's release does match up a lot with the Senator Print. I've seen those pictures several times and never get away the feeling that does pictures itself are a) a proper reference b) way too overbright. A lot of detail seems lost in the bright levels and it looks wrong to me.

The sandcrawler scene matches nicely up to the look of those. Don't tell me thats what SW is supposed to look.

Those "scans" of a original print simply look like someone turned a light-bulb on 200% and thats wrong. I strongly even prefer the look of muted GOUT

I'm trying to say the picture is result of the screening, not the image-source itself. The resulting look will be caused by the equipment used. But a digital projector (monitor, screen) is not a canvas. So making it to look like canvas is wrong in the beginning.

Harmy is supposed to "match" the I.B. print. But not "literally".

Harmy knows a lot about color grading, and a lot about every single shot of Star Wars.  Although it may give you some satisfaction to try to point out the shortcomings of his efforts at some length, I don't think it's necessary.  He knows them very well.

Of course. He probably knows a million more things than I do and is an absolute expert. That considered, it's even harder to believe why this exact shot looks so totally off with the whole movie.

I know the goal restoration is to restore everything with even their faults, Star Wars is an old movie full of flaws (and charme). May I know where Harmy did his sandcrawler shot reference from?

To be truthful, it looks like the correction was based on an old photograph, taken itself by a bad scan. That is not necessarily to be reference material.

Idea & Info: a different approach for restore bluray
Time

My eyes just teared up in joy.

Those colors are so juicy.

Just look at the silky silhouettes of Leia's robe

I think I can finally see the make-up as true make-up and not as enhancement of the face... well whatever, it simply feels life-like and not implied.

The imagery of Star Wars never ceases to amaze me

Can I watch the full movie with those color-profiles?

I just realized theres quiet a bit of new visual information on the sides (means it was cropped). Thats nice.

Will you please keep the movie uncropped for the final release?!

I mean if someone really must crop it he can still use his video-equipment, but having so much new visual information is just awesome. It's like a whole new movie inside a movie ;)

It's interesting but It doesn't look very OTish to me. It reminds more of a modern orange and teal grade.

Thats some of the greatest insult I can only think of for a project of it's kind.

The original Prequel Trilogy has so much colors, so vivid, overblown and the whole thing looks like a ugly mashup made by a colorblind person. So any efforts made to get away from this look is a masterful decision on it's own.

So I wish the absolute best for this project, still.

I agree you simply can hardly get rid of the PT look. But as long those pre-Star Destroyers have their magenta color ting removed and magenta all over the walls at every place, that's a great improvement!

Now It might become hard to not steer into Teal/Orange territory. Maintaining a natural blue not steering into the turquoise and maybe reducing the red's (skin) a little tiny bit would be second priority.

kk650's Star Wars Saga: Regraded and Semi-Specialized (Released)
Time

Hello kk650 I've recently tried to drawn a difference between your semi-specialized V2 release and Harmy's respecialized version and tried to compactly define each version.

So from my understanding I get that Harmy's Respecialized edition is his fantastically Despecialized 2.5 version, while bringing back some SE elements, but all the while keeping the same color grading as his 2.5 DE. I don't know what this one actually bases off.

Your Semi-Specialized edition however is directly sourcing the Blu-Ray edition and reverting it as close to the Special Edition as possible, yours including a very close color-palette to the 1997 Special Edition. Right?

At least your edition has a very distinctive, colorful look that reminds me a lot of the SE look, but made a bit more consistent and exposed. Each other release I'm looking at has a very pale and neutral look. Not to say thats a bad thing. But to summarize things:

kk650 Semi-Specialized: SE recreation (colors)

Harmy's DE/Respeialized and probably every other fanedit: Fade-free Technicolor Print recreation (colors)

is that about right?

I'm just slightly surprised by how faded the supposed Technicolor look actually looks. I really love the look of your edition. Cach has it's own flavour, but yes, I'm surprised by your version looks actually healthier than the so-called "Fade-Free" print which should be a flawless rec-reation. Maybe the Technicolor isn't that flawless in the first place?

Anyway good work

(oh and a 16GB of v2 would be a spleen)

Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions by Emanswfan (a WIP)

This project and attempt of trying to simulate another camera source for a film that was captured with different equipment, actually reminds me of stuff in music production.

There are plugins around where you can simulate the characteristics of a specific microphone. If you know the exact source microphone used, you can then simulate another microphone.

I don't even know which type of microphones are used for filming. Expect they're called boom mics. I hardly believe those are the same types as used in studios. However the big difference is probably the big pop filter they use to protect them.

Anyway if you know something about audio equipment used I'd be delighted to hear.

look for Antares Mic Modeller, it's actually a stoneage software there has been an update called MicDX or something the like. There are other plugins available doing the same maybe more advanced.

You could also simulate the distance/proximity of microphone to the source and it's correct physical behavior of air/dampening and delays

Whatever, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the words. Still I'm under the impression that you can really simply reduce the blue's by some 10-15% for the special editions to get rid of the tint. It really is THAT severe

You can simply remove as much blue's as until Hoth becomes basically white. It will look instantly gratified. At least for me it looks right.

If you set Blue to 89% and Green to 93% the snow parts look about right

Thats what I usually do in my media player, because I can't stop playing with the controls. And I really can't stand the BLUE ;)

Hey there,

I don't know how active The Aluminum Falcon is.

I've recently gave the semi-specialized V2 a view and it rather impressive then I gave Empire Strikes Back semi-specialized a go and I was very disappointed. Clearly stated in descriptions "to remove the blue tint that was introduced in the DVD versions".

What I see is a clear, thick blue tint all over Hoth, just as blue as any dvd ever was!:

Shouldn't it be ...less blue ...more white?

Actually here's a comparison picture from the recently uploaded Japanese Collector's edition. They go way back to 1993 when color's where still unaltered. That' some of the nicest white I've ever seen on Hoth:

So what happened?

I'm trying again the 16GB version. Maybe I'm just really scared of the blue tint?

Yeah, I'm also patiently waiting for progress on a BluRay color correction. Any would be good.

Probably it's way more work than just adjusting a general gamma curve and color balance correction.

But isn't the GOUT a ideal color template?

Getting the BluRay to those colors would be ideal.

Good luck with your work

Info Wanted: Star Wars Unaltered Original Trilogy in HD TV broadcast?
Time

Hello there, reviving this thread. I've found some more information.

Wookie Groomers HD Broadcast was released sometime 2007.

TO be considered containing more details in the highlights than blu-ray.

Harmy was supposed using this "version". And Neverar talks about this in this thread: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Neverars-1080p-Star-Wars-Color-Correction/post/687112/#TopicPost687112

See original information about Wookie Groomer's Present release in 2007

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Wookiegroomers-1080p-Star-Wars-Saga/topic/8203/

And mentioned here:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Wookie-Groomer-HDTV/topic/7914/

I just can't figure out if this is a truly original broadcast, or if it's a Special Edition 1997/2004 HD Broadcast that was made prior to the Bluray release. Somehow it seems to be an original GOUT broadcast I've never heard about it anyhow.

Info Wanted: Star Wars Unaltered Original Trilogy in HD TV broadcast?
Time

In 2006:

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/77641-sky-hd-tv-star-wars

There was also another date they supposedly aired the "original trilogy in HD" on another channel when I was browsing the internet. But I can't find that information right now. Probably it was SciFi channel or something.

I absolutely don't get that bit:

"Sky is quick to point out that it is the only broadcaster to show the whole saga in HD, as LucasFilm has not permitted the original three films to be shown in HD."

Seems contradict.

But if they are able to broadcast original films in HD, as they did when it still was a fresh technology and they would often look surprisingly well because there is simply a lot more picture information that was lost in SD broadcast.

And why don't they do it with Star Wars? Why didn't they?

Was Lucas really supervising to not let this happen at all cost?

Like pulling back all original copies of original Star Wars from every tv station and then send back a special edition copy?

It really sounds worse than the French inquisition

Star Wars was broadcast in it’s original form in HD.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this?

I can’t even find a picture about it. I really wondered if the quality is about the same of the 2006 GOUT DVD or if it’s better. I didn’t even realize the possibilities about it, because so much work is devoted to restoring Star Wars. Often a hd broadcast of an original film can look surprisingly good.

I hope this project isn't dieing.

I'd really like to see the original BluRay release in a close-as-possible to the original color.

Because in theorie I can live with all the technical additions, but the artificial coloring and tinting is what makes it really unbearable.

So please keep working on it, those screens looked great.

Could there be an estimated release date?

Help: looking for... Extended Star Wars fan-edits ?
Time

With the digital release from Making of Star Wars as eBook some 30 minutes additional film material has been release (per movie I guess)

This is some rare footage never to be seen before and it sure stirred up the one or the other fan boy.

I wonder if this material will be used by either Adywan, Harmy or any other fanboy to make a further extended edition or alternate fan edits.

This material has been released one day after I've started this post.

Go for it!

Help: looking for... Extended Star Wars fan-edits ?
Time

There have been numerous deleted scenes released and collected from various sources.

I.e. Star Wars Bluray

the Cd-Rom: Star Wars - behind the magic

a rare video-cd in Lucasfilm’s EditDroid format containing a whooping 30 minutes unreleased scenes

see here

and there are various other sources

I wonder if there ever will be a Star Wars edit (collection) containing as much deleted/alternate material as possible. And I’m not talking about the Pulp Fiction style edit.

Even black and white scenes could be inserted and very very simply colored. I mean if desert is yellow, sky is blue and flesh is beige thats enough not to be distracting

Has anyone ever edited the deleted scenes from bluray into a movie?

I would really like to see such stuff as the original introduction inserted with Luke on Tatooine watching the sky above, the sandstorm scene and lukes lightsaber assembly in it’s proper context.

It would also be very interesting to see an edit where scenes are re-ordered in it’s chronological integrity. A good example would probably be Adywan’s recut Obi-Wan scene. Just to give you a alternate view on the same movie

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

I don't want to unnecessarily flood this thread with my stupidity.

But there are seeds on MS, I've added the file to BT and it's showing 7 seeders, a total of 8 peers (on MS). I've added the file 2 days ago and it keeps staying on 0/0. I'm using the latest version of BT.

I've read trough the FAQ and I don't know what to do. It almost looks like one is supposed to use the website to getting things done. I dont see a way to do this.

Could it be possible that MS is blocked for either me, or in certain countries?

I'm in Switzerland. I don't use a router or anything the like. Everything is running fine otherwise. BT just seems not to get any trackers for the container. I've even looked for a way of manually adding them, to no avail.

*EDIT* Allright, I'm now using µT and it runs like a weasel.

Whatever was the problem with BT, I will not be using that again.

Thanks for anyones patience

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Hey there Harmy.

I've already enjoyed your remastered 2.1 release, partly despecialized ROTJ and ESB. Few days ago I've watched the first half of your phenomenal 2.5 release. The bit around the cantina scene is always a good breaking point ;)

I've got a few questions you might just answer personally.

1. What exactly is the Mos Eisley scene you've used from the team negative1 35mm LPP print? Is it the the part in the city where Obi Wan goes like "you don't need to see his identification" etc.

or the Cantina scene and later?

2. Please give a short explanation of the three first audio mixes. What exactly does each one mean?

Are the stere and mono mix just a "mix-down" of the same 6-track source. Or are those different sources, recreations which contain the famous missing lines/alternate takes?

Where do they source from and/or who was responsible.

Thanks anyway.

And then there's that interesting read I've just got from the team negative1's restoration thread http://www.wideanglecloseup.com/starwarsaudio.html
