Star Wars Trilogy 7" 33 1/3 book and record set (Released)
Time

Wav or Aif (if you're using Apple).

I dug up my old record books from the basement today too.  They're also in pretty rough shape.  I have the records for Star Wars and Empire but not for Jedi.  The records are actually in decent shape.  I also have two unopened Ewok "Planet of the Hoojibs" record books.  Don't remember where I got those, but if you want we can work that into your project.

I found one problem already when I was messing around with mine.  The pages are square and the pictures are sometimes overlayed by text (like when the death star explodes in the Star Wars one).  So you need to think about if you want the text on the video or just the pictures and audio.  If you do want the text you will need to stretch it to fit the widescreen HD aspect ratio.  Something to think about...

OK, the books have been purchased, it was a big investment but in the end I think it will prove to be the best option for quality sake. I should receive them all no later than the end of the month.

The next part will be scanning the images in, granted I don't have a super high quality scanner, I think it should do the trick. Perhaps I can lean on some of you to help me out in restoring them to their best look possible! I'm so excited I can't wait!

I checked out Adobe's rather expensive software and I just don't have the dough for it. The next step for me to do is scan in the pages and try to record high quality lossless audio. Any suggestions as to the best way to do this would be much appreciated. Again I use a program called Spin It Again which is pretty darn good but the output is still MP3.

Onwards and upwards!

Cheers,

For audio processing, Audacity is free and would be able to do the recording and output to .wav format.

:)

Also... Premiere, AfterEffects, Audition etc have free trials you can download.  I'm pretty sure they're the full versions with a 30 day time limit, which might well be enough for this project.

... I want it to be just like picking up a book only on a DVD with each book's pages turning automagically for you while in sync with the record.

This sounds like a cool idea.  I'm wondering if there is software out there to create this kind of effect for you? ...

I know you can do this in premiere and aftereffects, I've done it before.  I'm pretty sure you can do it in FC too.

Has anyone checked this site out?

http://www.readalongadventures.com/flash/downloads.htm

I have the books for the three original movies that I had as a kid, I may have records for one or two of them still also, I'd have to dig them up.  I have a couple of unopened ewoks ones too, like planet of the hoojibs.  I can scan these things and make a video of them if I can get the missing audio if anyone wants me to help.

PT: Help me identify a trailer?
Time

I got an episode 3 trailer from ebay for a whopping 99 cents and now that it’s arrived I’m trying to figure out which one it is.  There are two stickers on it, one that says this film has not yet been rated and one that says “Star Wars episode III w/ Meet the Fockers.”  It starts with the release date and then a quick montage of action shots.  I didn’t unspool it past that point.  I’m trying to find a video of it online so I can see what it looks like but I can’t find it.  It’s not the trailer that starts with Luke looking at the twin suns (that’s the one I was originally hoping it would be) and it’s not the one that starts with Palpatine talking about unnatural powers. Any ideas?

Is there any chance of de-coding the DTS Time Code (the dot/dash Morse code-like patterns next to the sound track wave forms) in the pics Brooks provided?  So one of those frames can be matched up to the DTS CD-ROM.

Mentioned in here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DTS_%28sound_system%29

Related but not an answer: datasatdigital.com/docs/archive/DDE_606_ADS7.pdf

I should point out that I got these strips on ebay and I don't know for certain if they're from the film itself or from a trailer.  Are all of these shots in one of the trailers?

If the dts time code in these frames is useful I could post the full five frames of each shot

I use photobucket.

@ Brooks.....

Maybe I should send you my film strips for scanning....I'm not sure I'll be able to do anything with them any time soon.

How accurate is the scanning software when it comes to the film?

I'm not an expert or anything but it seems to me to be very accurate.  I use silverfast which came with the epson, pretty sophisticated software. I import directly into photoshop.  If you want I'd be happy to scan your film and then send it back to you along with the scans.  I enjoy doing that sort of thing.  I'll pm you :)

I'm guessing the ghosting "could" be fixed?  :)

Well, upon review I think it is, as you guys suggested, an artifact of the scan.  Here is a new scan that is completely uncorrected (besides being made much smaller to fit on the forum).  It's hard to see on this tiny version but the ghosting is still there (you can see it on the left wing of the shuttle) but it is MUCH less noticeable.

(PS picasa web albums are a huge pain to use on the forum.  what site do you guys use to host pics?)

Can you see it here on the left of the wing?  It's hard to see

I love these scans....shows some really rich colors.  How did you scan these?  I have a scanner but I don't have an adapter tray to use with it.

I used an epson perfection 4490 photo scanner.  I got it super cheap on clearance so that I can scan all my personal photo negatives, it's pretty great for the price!

(I was moving this over from the  The 1997 Star Wars Special Edition Trilogy Preservation Standards Thread [Work In Progress  thread but it looks like -1 beat me to it)  :)

I have some strips of the 35mm SE Jedi, about 5 frames per strip.  Here are some scans of some of the frames that might be useful to someone as a reference.  These are  using Silverfast's auto settings, I can post the full raw scans of the entire strips with no correction at all also if anybody wants to see them or thinks they may be useful as a color reference.

Those strips show off the superiority of the 35mm and further underline how all the video versions have paled in comparison to the theatrical prints. This may be the only way to get fine detail back in the SE.

My original scans are 5K pixels wide in their original anamorphic aspect ratio and 8-10K wide when stretched back out to widescreen at 4800 optical dpi.  Here's a link to one of the frames at full size just to give you an idea of how big these scans are (to see it full size you have to click on the little magnifying glass at the top and then use the little scroll box on the bottom to zoom in).  Of course this is a highly compressed jpg.

Notice the ghosting around the ships?  That's in all the frames I have, I don't know what that is.  I would love to experiment with scanning an actual film this way (frame by frame on a photoscanner) and see what the results look like.

(I do wonder, though, how hard it would be to find the theatrical 97 SE prints)

Just using the auto/tone auto/color features in photoshop show how nice this can look!

add a touch of focal blade to sharpen, and these are just using the low res samples -1 posted.  I'm so psyched about this project!

If you wanted to make a native HD version, yes, but this was done at 720 x 480 DV. The image on the film frame was an anamorphic 2.35 image (actually wider, but I can't recall the AR on this specific print). So the 480 vertical resolution would work great on a 720p upscaled version in which 2.35 is 544 pixels tall. It would only need a slight upconvert and then stretched out. Plus the benefit of having a H.264 encode would be wonderful as well.

...I have made the full raw captures available for other projects - for example, Harmy used a couple of segments to enhance his edition.  That is really the main reason I've done these captures - for research

Well then theoretically couldn't somebody else convert the captures to an HD file?  I'd like to help out if anybody wants to tackle it.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time

Here's a question about scanning 35mm film.  I got a few strips from ebay and scanned them on my epson flatbed.  As you can see they're "smushed" looking, something I'm sure the projector lens is meant to compensate for, how I can do that in photoshop to restore them to their proper aspect ratio?  My scanner does 4800dpi optical, too bad you can't do an entire film that way, the pictures are huge!
