Discussion: DIY - LEGO 10179: Ultimate Collector Series - Millennium Falcon
Time

What a fun project!  I had no idea the falcon is bringing that much on the secondary market.  How much was it new?  I remember seeing it in stores, maybe I should've picked one up.  I have a lot of the first lego star wars sets.  I loved the mini figs when they first came out.  I still have one of the first landspeeder sets in the box because I got two of them for christmas that year.

Those lego sites are a fantastic resource.  A few years ago I used them to piece back together a few of the sets I had as a kid in the 80's for nostalgic reasons.  I couldn't believe they had scans of the instructions from 30 year old sets!

Definitely post pics of the progress!

It's kind of sad for him to have something "worth" thousands of dollars disintegrate before his eyes.  It's even sadder that a generation of films will disappear because of crappy film.  Did the film industry not know any better during that time?  You'd think the studios and the film manufacturers, being as established and experienced as they were by the 70's, would have not made such a fundamentally flawed product.

I thought it was hilarious when during the HD-DVD / Blu-Ray "war", people were saying, "Which format will porn choose?" Those people completely neglected two things:

1. Porn choosing VHS in the 80s mattered because you couldn't stream porn with two clicks of a button on your computer.

2. Because of said ease of availability of porn on the web, only morons buy porn in the present day.

My local Fry's has an entire aisle dedicated to morons then. ;)

Speaking of porn, does anyone think Disney will go after the company that made that SW porno that came out this year?

Wouldn't this technically count as a parody, thus out of reach of Disney?

I didn't even know there was such a thing.  Maybe they won't notice either?

Chemical breakdown is destroying the world's movie film libraries and archives at an alarming rate...

How sad.  I don't know as much about motion picture film but I used to be into still photography and we were always told in the days before digital that film would last a century or more.  Slide film in particular was supposed to be archival safe.

Hypothetically speaking of course, not that I would ever do such a thing mind you, but if I were inclined to do such a thing, which two clicks do I hit exactly?  :)

92. Star Wars (Original 1977 Version, no “Episode IV” inserted, vinegar smell) - $250.00
94. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (Original 1980 Version, mix of Eastman and Fuji reels) - $500.00

Saw these over @ 35mm Forum in anyone is interested.....

That sounds like a pretty reasonable price, does it not?  I really don't know what these things usually go for.

Despite the screenshot I posted I don't actually want Monsignor Martinez to shoot Rick McCallum.  I always got the impression from the behind the scenes videos that he was all about the digital special effects and I felt the movies suffered for that.  I didn't mean to offend any of his fans here.

Bluray will gradually become more common.  I think the biggest threat to its success now isn't dvd but streaming video.  Having access to a movie whenever you want it (like on netflix for example, as annoying as netflix has become) makes owning the movie seem unnecessary for a lot of people.  Something hollywood should think about when pricing blurays.

I still believe its unlikely we'll see the fox fanfare unless it's part of a deal to get the rights to the original trilogies earlier than 2020.

Not everybody has access to a super fast connection, and some providers are setting bandwith caps on their customers.

Those automated DVD rental machines seem pretty popular in my area. Even though South Park proclaimed Blockbuster "dead", there are still two stores holding on in my town, and a Mom & Pop video store is still around after 20 years.

People will probably still want to buy their all time favorite film to watch over and over.

Oh I know, my connection is horrible.  We cancelled our netflix streaming because the selection is so bad and we were constantly buffering.  Redbox and the like are good for new releases but awful for older movies.  I guess maybe the reason people aren't buying blurays of movies they already own is they're just satisfied with the dvd.  It doesn't feel as dramatic an improvment as dvd was over vhs.  I'd buy star wars on blu ray if it was the correct version.  I wouldn't mind LOTR on blu ray but I've heard bad things about the way they did that one.

Anyway, I've been hoping the exact same thing as you in regards to the Fox fanfare. I don't see why it would be completely out the realm of possibility, either. Fox would only need to be given the theatrical distribution rights. Disney could keep everything else for themselves (dvd/blu-ray, television, streaming, etc). The vast majority of the box office gross would still be going to Lucasfilm, and therefore Disney.

Yeah, but would disney give up that percentage, however small it might be, just to satisfy the continuity with the previous trilogies?  I personally think disney will be anxious to brand these as their own and use the disney intro.  I guess we can add the fox intro to our own versions :)

Is there a disney intro at the beginning of avengers?  I can't remember.

Use the force, Brooks. And find me, you will :D

As for more details, not yet. However, if they're trying to secure writers for films 8 and 9, they are probably looking at this as the whole trilogy rather than just Episode 7. Hopefully this means they are looking for a long term crew, and possibly means they are considering LOTR style continuous filming.

I'm just happy that they're putting thought into the scripts this far in advance. It's nice that the story is being given so much attention by the studio.

Easter, I really don't think it helps the flow of discussion if you're not willing to actually discuss - making a comment, but not following up, tends to draw out the purist in many of us, believing you don't have adequate supporting evidence. While this is "originaltrilogy.com", people here are actually quite open to discussing things civilly, despite having opposing viewpoints. I'd suggest you put yourself out there... I mean, consider this:

I've made these points about myself very clear:

  • I love the light saber battle with Yoda from AotC.
  • Under the crap, AotC is my favorite SW film.
  • I'm working on a serious edit of TPM with Jar Jar as the main character.
  • I believe Yoda could be replaced by cgi in the OT effectively.
  • I believe editors doing SAGA edits should mold the PT to the OT, but also the OT to the PT.
  • I think the original Krayt Dragon Call blends in too much with the score.
  • I don't really care if Han shoots first or not.
  • I'm rather fond of Ewoks.

Those may be quite different from many around here... but without conflicting viewpoints, this forum for discussion becomes sorely lacking in discussion. I've found in the past few years that the internet as a whole has come to this realization - too many forums and sites collapsed and died, taking with them the few trolls that sat around and did nothing but agree with each other.

Just something to consider.

Where do you live exactly?   I need to know where to steer my death star.  :)

That really surprises me actually, given the attention your awesome work has gotten.  I would love to hear you on a cast talking about the techniques and decisions you made on your restoration. You can be on ours if you want but it's pretty small time, I'm not sure if anyone listens.

...Lastly, and this is the most exciting possibility for me (although it is a minute one) is the idea of rebooting the prequel trilogy.  C'mon Disney, take a page from your other adopted son Marvel.  Hulk, remember that?  Of course you don't.  Nobody does.  It was rebooted before Banner had a chance to go buy purple stretchy pants.  Spiderman?  Yup, same thing.  Do the right thing, Disney.  Reboot the prequels to actually match the classic trilogy and to give this sequel trilogy some roots.

Be careful what you wish for, they may decide to reboot the OT as well.  I doubt it, but I was surprised that they rebooted Spiderman so soon, so?
