This was a custom avatar I created way back in the day (before the custom upload feature crapped out), so I'm keeping it. It's been my avatar since I started here in March 2003, so I'm pretty attached to it.

And, I guess so long as you submit to the mighty power that is Bossk and keep calling him "cool," then you're okay using it for the time being in my book.

That ability should change if and when Jay implements the new software. Of course he's been working on that for a year+ now.

Bear in mind, when we do go to the new software and Jay sets it so only one person can have an avatar, I will be politely requesting sole possession of my persona. Otherwise, I'm going Trandoshan on you.

Nintendo Wii

That's a damn fine place from which to start, isn't it? And it's going to serve as proof that game designers are finally taking the Nintendo seriously again. Before, people had to wait for titles like Madden on Nintendo. It always went to PS2 and X-Box first. Now Nintendo will be getting them all at the same time. That's good news.

DS vs. PSP one year later

I haven't decided which of the DSs I will be buying. The DS Lite is really nice looking, but if the discounted price on the DS is really good, I may just opt for that.

Overall, I prefer the DS to the PSP. My brother has a PSP and he wants me to get one so we can link and play each other. LINK?!?! I told him the DS that I will be getting can play on a wifi network with anyone anywhere. His jaw nearly hit the ground.

Plus, the other big benefit of the DS is the Opera browser that will be coming out later this year. Surf the web on your DS. How cool is that? Diggnation previewed the Opera browser recently and they loved it. They said one screen is the full view of the page you are on while the other screen can be set to show a magnification of the area of the full screen that you tap with your stylus. Very cool.

And the new Super Mario Bros... friggin' awesome.

There are three major differences between the VHS>DVD and the DVD>HD-DVD shift...

1. The technology was soooo different from VHS to DVD, that it was clearly noticeable. At a Sony press conference, people were ooing and ahing a demonstration of the PS3's Blu Ray player in action. Until a reporter walked up and ejected the disc afterward to discover it was simply a movie burned on DVD-R. No HD whatsoever. They couldn't tell the difference but pretended they could. And, with the current equipment that most people have, they still won't.

2. People did not need to buy a whole new TV for the difference to be noticeable. You need an HDTV for this difference to really work well. The monetary investment differential is much more significant this time around. Before, you bought a player for a couple hundred dollars and some cheap movies. Now you not only need the player, but either a new TV or a dumb-down signal translator for your old gear for a couple hundred (and why bother with that? If you're going to play on an old TV, there's no point in owning an HD-DVD player).

3. The shift to DVD promised people the opportunity to buy any and all new movies the very day they are released to video stores unlike with VHS where it could be upwards of six months to a year before you could buy a reasonably priced tape to own. No such change will exist with DVD>HD-DVD. It will still be the same day. No big difference. That was a HUGE selling point for me.

They are happy with regular DVD, and don't see a reason to switch, especially since they just got off VHS a few years ago. I see HD-DVD/blu-ray becoming this generations equivilant of the laserdisc. A high-end niche market.

That's exactly how I view it. Thanks for chiming in with that, Number20.

Don't forget that the 20GB version will not have the good Blu Ray-out connections so you can hook it up to your TV. In effect, if you want to use the Blu Ray, you need the $600 unit. Sony is making two models, but effectively forcing you to buy the higher-end model. I'll bet this will also be reflected in production quantities. The $400 model will have few to none actually made. There will be some to cater to those who don't know any better. But, the bulk of their production efforts will be on the $600 jobber.

While this isn't the textbook definition, it strikes me as a variant of bait and switch. You offer Blu Ray capabilities, but, you know what, it only really works on the expensive model. Wonder if there will be a legal flap over this at all.

Yeah, but for how many people will this high-end blu ray player really help? To really take advantage of what it offers, you need an HDTV which most people do not have and are not planning on getting for some time (at least until prices are more manageable). So, if you do not have such a TV, you must spend anywhere from US$800-4000 for the blu ray to be worthwhile. Suddenly, the cost of the system due to extra hardware costs, jumps through the roof.

What Sony should be doing is putting out a third system that does not have the Blu Ray player built in to it. Me? I could care less about it. When the time comes that I'm forced to upgrade to HD-DVD (and it won't happen until I'm forced), I'm buying a dedicated HD-DVD player, not a PS3. With the PlayStation's breakdown rate in the PS2 era (which I attribute to it being used as a DVD player), I wouldn't want to put all my eggs in one basket relying on the PS3 as both a gaming system and an HD-DVD player. It breaks down, I'm screwed on two fronts instead of just one.

Nintendo has it right. Focus on gaming. Leave it at that.
