Worst Movies of 2003
Time
Thankfully I stayed the hell away from that one. Can't call it one of the worst if I haven't seen it. But it's probably a safe assumption.

Luke, you gotta remember that it doesn't take much for a movie to be an improvement over crap. And since the first one was true crap, this one can still be crap and be better than the first. Kinda like the rings of hell. One's worse than another, but they're all still hell.

You're smart for staying away from LB2. Wish I did. So does my wife. I haven't seen second Tomb Raider or second Bad Boys. Also haven't seen Freddy vs. Jason because I just can't see a new Jason film that doesn't have Kane Hodder. Sacrilege.

Already got one for the Worst of 2004 - Win a Date With Tad Hamilton. Blech.

I think it was nice to have those "off" elements. Added a new dimension to it. Goes to show what three years of writer's block can do for a series.

I did enjoy it and much moreso than Book 4 which bored me. Took me friggin' forever to read 4 whereas I cut the time down by about 75% in 5 because it held my attention that much more.

I completely forgot about Something's Gotta Give. That was good. Much better than Jack's last flick About Schmidt which I hated. Sorry to all Schmidt fans, but we all have our opinions.

Scumb, you would have liked the opening image. Just a fixed close up on Johansson's butt laying on her side on a bed with pink cotton, see-through panties. Camera lingers there for quite a while. And for good reason...

Lord of the Rings...what's the deal?
Time
True it doesn't seem like the sort of fare that would attract the hording masses the way it has. But I think there are several things that have contributed to this...

1. The books are older than our parents and everyone has heard of them in some way, shape, or form.
2. It was well marketed and not overmarketed (read: The Hulk)
3. The production process has been well documented and without the typical sorts of problematic reporting that came with say Titanic or the Matrix sequels. People knew what was going on and they never really heard anything negative about the whole process.
4. The CGI do a great job in the story. I agree they do not tell the whole story like some people claim they do or like the SW PT movies have done, but they are a very important element in the popularity. I think the popularity of Gollum is what's continuing to bring people in for ROTK. Many may have missed him the first time around and now, after seeing his "acceptance" at the MTV Video Awards, they were completely entranced and want to see him on the big screen finally. MTV may suck as a whole, but you cannot deny it's power over Young America and the rest of the world.
5. Sex appeal... Liv Tyler and Miranda Otto for the guys (and not-so-straight women) and Viggo Mortenson and Orlando Bloom for the women (and not-so-straight guys). A lot can be said for having good looking people in a movie. Even if they are not that well known like Otto, Mortenson, and Bloom were before the release. Mortenson is known as an actor but he was never a "sex symbol" per se. If anything, he was a rather greasy looking kind of guy. But, Jackson redid a lot of the story to allow for a female-appeal love triangle with Arwen, Eowyn, and Aragorn and it helped immensely to bring in women.
6. A multinational cast of epic proportions. Brought in people of all cultures because they want to see some of their fellow kinsmen. Unlike the Harry Potter films whose only non-UKer was Verne Troyer (Mini ME in a cameo), these have the appeal of having people from around the world cast in it.

Okay folks... saw Lost in Translation last night. Excellent film. If you like Bill Murray a la Ed Wood, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums, you'll love this. Now in my top 10 as well. I'm gonna have to revisit my rankings but not until after this weekend when I hope to see Big Fish and maybe even The Last Samurai.

I'm waiting to see Big Fish, Last Samurai, and Lost in Translation as well (may see that one tonight in 2nd run).

Sorry you don't agree on PotC but I absolutely loved Johnny Depp in it. He made the movie and it was enjoyable as hell. Yes there are films that are better and I'm now putting one up there since I saw it this weekend.

LOTR: ROTK is now my #1. Finally saw it.

That would definitely work, Scumb. A good breakdown indeed.

Book 5 being translated will be interesting. But may work the same way as well so long as a lot of the superfluous crap is cut.

Yes, I had heard about Jackson doing Hobbit. Wondering about the casting decision but that won't happen for a while since he's hard at work on King Kong right now.

Same thing happened at my school. Granted it was 4+ years ago. They bought completely new PCs for a video editing lab (against the TAs' advice who insisted on Macs). We had techs called in at least once to twice a week to tweak the systems folders on these computers. Each computer, despite having exactly the same hardware and software installed, worked differently and people all had their favorites. There were two computers that were avoided altogether because they never seemed to work properly. Worst investment of money that I've ever seen.

As for G4 girl... Hellloooooo Nurse!! Also gotta say that I love the Biblical overtones inherent in the picture with the Apple logo covering her womanhood. I wonder if that was intentional.

Can't wait for G5 girl... the upgrade! Much faster than G4 girl (take that however you want).

Oooh, top ten lists. Gotta love 'em.

Okay, here goes, but keep in mind that I still haven't seen all the films that I want to see, like ROTK, Bad Santa, and Lost in Translation (all of which I should be seeing in the next week or so).

1. From Justin to Kelly (just kidding, wanted to see if you guys were paying attention)

Okay, for real this time...

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
2. Finding Nemo
3. Open Range
4. X2: X-Men United
5. Narc (not in wide release until '03; so to me here in Chicago, this is a 2003 release)
6. Gangs of New York (not in wide release until '03; see above)
7. The Italian Job
8. The Recruit
9. Runaway Jury
10. Whale Rider

I may have forgotten something that I've seen, but my mind isn't working all that well on its own right now. Damn holiday brain freeze. So I'm working off a website listing video release dates from last year and the first few months of this year.
