Top Ten of 2003.
Time
I suddenly realized I didn't even have ROTK on here. Yikes. Gundark will be happy that it bumps off one of my "2002" releases.

1. The Last Samurai - easily Cruise's best work, IMHO
2. Finding Nemo
3. Lost in Translation
4. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
5. Open Range
6. Narc (not in wide release until '03; so to me here in Chicago, this is a 2003 release)
7. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
8. X2: X-Men United
9. Something's Gotta Give
10. Big Fish

And I'm planning to see 21 Grams on Wednesday night. I like Sean Penn, so here's hoping. And not that Naomi Watts is anything to scoff at ("her name is 'I moan' backwards" -- Ryan Reynolds, National Lampoon's Van Wilder)

I liked Lost in Translation a lot especially because of its originality. I know I'm gonna get flamed for not picking ROTK. But I feel that if any of the LOTR films deserved Best Picture, it would be TTT. Yes, the visuals were great in ROTK and I loved the Smeagol/Deagol bit in the beginning and the development of Pippen's character, the movie just wasn't as good as the previous two. I was bored with several stretches of it and just wanted that damn ending to actually end already.

However, knowing the Academy, they are going to run with ROTK because it is a sentimental favorite due to the time and effort exerted by Peter Jackson, et al, which is not how they should do it. They should be judging based on this movie alone and not the series.

My money goes to Lost in Translation.

I have easily erased the image of Ricci in Addams Family out of my head. I so much prefer her as an actress now that forgiving and forgetting was no problem. She is so cool as an actress. Very much like Scarlett in that regard. Actresses who work on their own terms. You gotta respect the hell out of that one.

Star Wars: The Rise of Darth Vader = TV series

Yeah, I saw it on TDB.com this morning. I like it, I guess. My big beef is that the MSRP on this set is the same as the Helmet Edition but doesn't include the book (to the best of my knowledge). You would think that the lack of a book would warrant a downpricing. I would love to own this set as it was one of my fave shows as a kid (along with The Brady Bunch and CHiPs), but I must be reasonable. Gotta keep thinking... this or iPod.
