a Star Trek thread...
Time
There's no question that Trek needs a hiatus. They translated the success of Next Generation to mean that people can't get enough Trek so they deluged us with God only knows how many different series. And they kicked the movies into high gear. And they burned out the franchise. Make it go away for about 5-10 years. Do nothing except books for a while. When it comes back after fans have had the time to cool off, it will likely be welcomed back with open arms. Just don't overdo it again.

If they did decide to release the OV of SW on DVD, would you:

a) Like the version we saw at the cinema, matt lines, boxes around ships..etc?

or

b) Have the OV but with the effects cleaned up. ie, no matt lines, no boxes etc?

Still the original version, but just cleaned up like the 2004 DVD. No extra shit 'an all.

Personally I would prefer b. The OV but all cleaned up, looking good as new, so to speak!

Honestly, I wouldn't care which it was so long as it was a version without all the new shit. While I like the "charm" of the matte lines and whatnot since that was what I grew up with, I would probably prefer it. But I know that would never fly with Lucas, et al, at ILM. So, if he wants to clean that stuff up, that's fine. Just don't add stuff.

"No, George, it doesn't matter who Sifo-Dyas is. Nobody is going to care!"

"No, George, people will accept the love story. They'll eat it up!"

You mean "no, George" like that?

I stand corrected.

Horror movie fans...
Time
To me, Blair Witch was a joke. You wanna talk about horror movies that have no fright factor whatsoever, that movie is it. The only thing I feared was that I would lose my lunch because I forgot to take a Dramamine before watching it. It's worse than sitting in the cabin of a boat during a hurricane. Sorry, guys. Blair Witch was a stupid movie that only did well because of creative marketing. If not for that marketing, it would have flopped horribly. I just remember that within a couple months of its video release, local stores had marked it down to half it's initial selling price and used stores had tons of copies that they couldn't even sell for US$3-4. That DVD is in so many stores' bargain bins now. Testament to a "classic", eh?

Sorry, I don't mean to rag on it. This is just an opinion much like any of yours. I'm not trying to persuade anyone, just expressing my opinion.

Hey, I was looking forward to the movie as much as anyone else. Thought it would be such a life giver to what was rapidly becoming a dead genre. Yet when I walked out of the theater, my wife, our friends, and I all wanted our money and those couple hours of our lives back.

Gimme The Exorcist any day of the week.

Here's a Hint of the Public's Reaction that the '04 DVDs would not be the OOT
Time
The Criterion versions are pretty damned good. They truly treat their movies like they are their own children. That's why they don't offer up too many, because they really want to give each film their full attention.

I have seen The Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Robocop (the NC-17 rated version that didn't make it to theaters), Chasing Amy, Monty Python's Life of Bryan, and The Royal Tenenbaums in Criterion. They are all very damn good.

In the case of Tenenbaums and Amy, Criterion was elected to release the only version of a relatively recent theatrical release film. Why? I'm not too sure. But I've been happy with the results.

Okay, there is no such thing as too advanced a floor that you need to CGI it. C'mon, when you look at the flooring that appeared in TPM and AOTC (if you even bothered to pay attention to it), did it really look that damn special that it needed to be CG. Hell no! That is the epitome of laziness. I agree with just about everyone here. And then there's that spoiler shot from ROTS that shows them sitting on green screen boxes because they couldn't bother to construct a simple speeder or whatever it is they are going to be sitting in?!? That's ridiculous.

Actually guys, I think Jimbo did spell the Bard's name right. At least in terms of how Lucas dealt with it. It truly becomes "Shackspeire" with the emphasis on "hack".

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Sheba, I doubt Natalie is even remotely close to you. Honestly, from what I can tell based on what I read on your page, very few women are you.

I would include the Artoos, the 3PO, and Yak Face in the count.

Blue Snaggletooth I'm not so sure about since he was a regional exclusive. I'd tend not to even thought I insist on having him in my collection to consider it "complete". I think he came with some kind of Sears-only playset that was available in New England.

Variations, definitely not. I've got so many variants, it's sick.

Yes, it does make life a bit easier. My wife doesn't like Star Wars. So, you know that there won't be any time spent with the two of us watching them together. So, the only time is when we're not both together but I spend a lot of that time watching other movies I've rented that I know she doesn't want to see. For example, tonight I'll be watching Paycheck. I can honestly say that only once have I watched an entire SW movie straight through at home since we've been married. Sad, but true.

I don't love her any less for it, don't get me wrong. And I will get her to watch them all sometime before we both die. May the Force be with me in my endeavor.
