Harmy's STAR WARS Respecialized Edition '97 - AVCHD and MKV Released
Time

Of the 4 usenet search engines I’ve tried, the 8 GB and 14 GB versions of Adywan’s 1997 ESB only seem to show up under NZBKing. This site’s NZB files changed format for some reason a year or two ago immediately after their servers crashed for a few days, and ever since then my usenet software (alt.binz 3.94 - free and portable) hasn’t pulled in their data correctly whether the file was uploaded before or after the crash. It seems to think the individual rar file sizes are only 250 kB, for example.

You may have better luck with more up to date software. As for a news server, free-usenet is great albeit slow.

JEDIT: I’ve just tested these popular newsreaders for Usenet: NZBGet and SABnzbd. Both are also free, and have the advantage of being fully compatible with NZBKing as well as more user friendly than alt.binz.

All the frames are at least a little pink. Some are pinker than others, but on the whole there is less fading than on the other 35mm prints we scanned. So the samples above have been adjusted slightly to show how much color information is still there.

Here is an untouched frame from the same set, for reference:

Thanks for the comparison; the untouched frame doesn’t look too badly faded at all. Is this Fuji type of print therefore generally more stable and slower to fade to red than whatever was used for the Grindhouse print (Eastman?). I remember seeing a few untouched frames from the Grindhouse a few years ago which looked like they had been doused with ketchup!

<strong>4K77</strong> - Released

It’s very hard to estimate the risk, but keeping things seeded would certainly help your cause. Another solution is just to get 4K77 (and possibly some of the other scans you are after) from Usenet. I can vouch for “free-usenet” along with portable alt.binz software. Not the fastest way - it may take three days or so - but completely free and won’t hurt your spleen ratio.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)
Time

It’s a little tricky to find on Google, admittedly, since slight variations on the search words lead to nearly identical sites (all in French as it happens), but only one site allows you to successfully follow the link to sign up. Try searching for: dreamastered 1980. The site you want has the “.is” domain.

Note: I can’t vouch that this is genuine, but the details and file size in the description check out.

Info: Return of the Jedi, in Harmy's Despecialized, has CGI by &quot;mistake&quot;?

What happened was I said something dumb but quickly edited it into a shitpost, which derailed the thread a little bit but now I wish to own up to my crimes and right my wrongs.

It gave me a good chuckle in any case!

I’ve taken another look and see what you and the OP mean about the frog looking like CGI. Not because it looks slightly off (in the way crap CGI does), but because entire movement looks too realistic to be a simple puppet. I would say the effect is streets ahead of Salacious Crumb for example, who moves more like a Muppet.

The new print is not faded and is mold-free, it should give us both a great colour reference and good quality for the main scan. The other prints will be to help with any frames missing from the new print, and as a resource for any badly damaged frames on the new print.

So long story short, it is much better than any of the previous sources (i.e. the UK, German or Frindhouse).

It is just a matter now of saving up some more dollars for cleaning and scanning and storage etc.

Great news, Poita - exciting times for ESB fans.
Please could you check your pms from a couple of weeks ago regarding a contribution made earlier in the month?
Many thanks,

For all these years I’ve heard that line as “base troops” and thought it was a little odd…
But as you point out, “best troops” doesn’t make much more sense given how cr*p they are against teddy bears.

It is based on this technique http://www.mudgee.net/ot/colourgrading.pdf
The basics are here: https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Colour-matching-for-fan-edits/id/7257/page/1
Hope that helps!

Thank you for the info and the links. I hadn’t realised the underlying algorithm was iterative until reading those guides.

I’ve just noticed this in the first post:

The samples posted so far have not been colour adjusted …

The pictures on page 1 of this thread all look great too, despite them coming from scans before the acquisition of the new, unfaded print. Presumably there was at least some basic adjustment to remove red fade from them? In layman’s terms, is it a case of applying a blanket reduction to the R value of the RGB codes across a reel so that it “looks about right”?

<strong>4K77</strong> - Released
Time

Regarding the stuttering problems some people have had with 4K77, I am reminded of an issue I had with NJVC’s 50GB bluray of Harmy’s SW DeEd on my standalone player. I noticed some weird stuttering in the video whereby it seemed to be losing a couple of frames each second, but the audio sounded fine.

I eventually discovered that by switching to an audio track other than the first (default) one, the video problems went away. It might be worth a try with the UHD 4K77 file, in case the underlying problem is actually with the software struggling to read the audio track at the expense of messing up the video.

(I realise this is a long shot!)
