Your newsreader should be able to handle “par2” files which allow any incomplete rars to be repaired automatically. If you can’t get this to work in your newsreader, then try QuickPar software. It’s free and will fix your rars provided you have downloaded enough par2 files from the newsgroup.

Of the 4 usenet search engines I’ve tried, the 8 GB and 14 GB versions of Adywan’s 1997 ESB only seem to show up under NZBKing. This site’s NZB files changed format for some reason a year or two ago immediately after their servers crashed for a few days, and ever since then my usenet software (alt.binz 3.94 - free and portable) hasn’t pulled in their data correctly whether the file was uploaded before or after the crash. It seems to think the individual rar file sizes are only 250 kB, for example.
You may have better luck with more up to date software. As for a news server, free-usenet is great albeit slow.

JEDIT: I’ve just tested these popular newsreaders for Usenet: NZBGet and SABnzbd. Both are also free, and have the advantage of being fully compatible with NZBKing as well as more user friendly than alt.binz.

Thanks for the comparison; the untouched frame doesn’t look too badly faded at all. Is this Fuji type of print therefore generally more stable and slower to fade to red than whatever was used for the Grindhouse print (Eastman?). I remember seeing a few untouched frames from the Grindhouse a few years ago which looked like they had been doused with ketchup!

Out of interest, are these untouched frames, or has basic colour-correction been applied to make them less faded? When you mentioned earlier that the print was faded, I was wondering if it had started to fade to red to the same extent as the Grindhouse print from 2015.

It’s very hard to estimate the risk, but keeping things seeded would certainly help your cause. Another solution is just to get 4K77 (and possibly some of the other scans you are after) from Usenet. I can vouch for “free-usenet” along with portable alt.binz software. Not the fastest way - it may take three days or so - but completely free and won’t hurt your spleen ratio.

I always thought the main title followed beautifully on from the Fox fanfare. Interesting to hear that Williams composed the title theme with that in mind! I agree that the fanfare ought to stay in place; any of the OT films without it would somehow feel incomplete.

It’s a little tricky to find on Google, admittedly, since slight variations on the search words lead to nearly identical sites (all in French as it happens), but only one site allows you to successfully follow the link to sign up. Try searching for: dreamastered 1980. The site you want has the “.is” domain.

I’ve taken another look and see what you and the OP mean about the frog looking like CGI. Not because it looks slightly off (in the way crap CGI does), but because entire movement looks too realistic to be a simple puppet. I would say the effect is streets ahead of Salacious Crumb for example, who moves more like a Muppet.

I’ve always liked that burping frog-like puppet in RotJ. As far as I know, Lucas didn’t try to “improve” it with CG effects for the special edition.

The new print is not faded and is mold-free, it should give us both a great colour reference and good quality for the main scan. The other prints will be to help with any frames missing from the new print, and as a resource for any badly damaged frames on the new print.
So long story short, it is much better than any of the previous sources (i.e. the UK, German or Frindhouse).
It is just a matter now of saving up some more dollars for cleaning and scanning and storage etc.

Regarding the stuttering problems some people have had with 4K77, I am reminded of an issue I had with NJVC’s 50GB bluray of Harmy’s SW DeEd on my standalone player. I noticed some weird stuttering in the video whereby it seemed to be losing a couple of frames each second, but the audio sounded fine.
I eventually discovered that by switching to an audio track other than the first (default) one, the video problems went away. It might be worth a try with the UHD 4K77 file, in case the underlying problem is actually with the software struggling to read the audio track at the expense of messing up the video.
(I realise this is a long shot!)
