Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)
Time

The issue I referred to earlier is similar to pittrek’s regarding VLC, but only for NJVC’s ISOs. (Specifically the actual movies on the 50 GB versions - I haven’t tried the 25 GB versions.)

With the help of the extra libraries, I can now play commercial Blu-rays on VLC no problem, with menus etc. Both with and without these libraries, I can also play some unofficial Blu-ray discs such as TN1’s Renegade Grindhouse ESB (~22 GB ISO).

But VLC won’t play the main movie in the NJVC ISOs on my system. Menu / extras are fine.
Windows 10 Pro, Intel i7 2.93 GHz, 4 core, 8 GB RAM.

Sorry for taking this thread in the technical direction and thus a little off topic. Any PMs about it welcomed, however.

I have had success in using VLC for iso files, but they need to be mounted to a virtual drive first. After the iso is mounted, if you right click to open, go into the bdmv folder, open stream and then right click the largest file(if there is more than one) and click ‘open with VLC’. It works pretty well.

Thanks for the feedback, one69chev.
Have you tried VLC with NJVC’s ISOs, or with some other ISOs? I’d be interested to know if the NJVC ones work for you. I have mounted them virtually in Windows 10, and tried the following:

  • Open the largest m2ts file with VLC - nothing happens. But the other m2ts files (extras) open fine.
  • Open the mounted drive as a Blu-ray disk in VLC. Menu works fine, extras play ok, but the main movie won’t work. The timer zips forward really fast, but there is no video/audio.

Many thanks for the info, Solkap!

The website is a little confusing as to whether or not the software is really free. The main page says “100% free” for the Blu-ray player, and yet the main download page says “free trial” on the file link. The online guide and FAQ also make reference to a trial version, with the latter saying that you only get to watch for 5 minutes…

Shame that VLC doesn’t cut the mustard with NJVC’s ISOs; it’s a great media player otherwise.

P.S. Your link has an erroneous “originaltrilogy . com/”.

I have a very old Sony Blu-ray player from about 10 years ago, and NJVC’s ISOs work fine on there when burned to disc. But I have a similar issue to you when trying to watch them on my PC with VLC. After “mounting” the ISOs as virtual discs in Windows 10, I can access the menus and extras etc. but the main films don’t play. In my case, the timer moves at about 10x speed when trying to play the film, but there is no video/audio. Has anyone got the ISOs to work in VLC?

Harmy’s mkv files work fine in VLC, however.

Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects

I feel like this can’t be a good idea. If these companies felt like the fan projects were becoming a problem (for example being sold for profit), I don’t think they would be very discriminating in their retribution. Everyone would be at risk.

I agree completely. Reporting these clowns directly to Ebay is one thing, but attracting Disney/Fox’s attention to this community would, in my view, be unwise. It just needs the wrong person over there to get involved - someone who takes a particularly dim view on the restoration/fan projects here - and OT in its current form could be shut down.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)
Time

P.S. For the original 1080p “Renegade Grindhouse” by TN1, make sure you have the ISO release rather than the mkv release.

Initially, TN1 released an mkv file: ESB_Grindhouse_1080p_BD25.mkv
This sadly had some corruption towards the final shots of the film.

A few days later, TN1 released a fixed ISO file: ESB_Grindhouse_1080p_BD_Compat.iso
That one has no corruption issues, and can also be burned directly to a Bluray disc for viewing on a standalone player.

Salut! 😃

The “Renegade Grindhouse” version of ESB (sometimes called “Grindhouse version 1”) refers to Team Negative 1’s original 35mm version, released in January 2015. TN1 intended to clean it up in order to release a “Sanitized” edition, a bit like their Silver Screen edition of Star Wars. Sadly they disbanded before finishing the project, and as far as I know it is no longer being worked on.

Dreamaster has indeed released his own colour-corrected versions of the Renegade Grindhouse, and they are known as “Single Pass Regrade” and “Dreamastered” as you have discovered. If you get the latter, make sure you get “Dreamastered version 2” which has corrected a few niggles here and there.

You may come across “Grindhouse version 2” of ESB. This was also released in January 2015 by TN1, but is based on a different print; it also goes by the name of “DCP (Digital Cinema Package) 2013”. I prefer the Renegade Grindhouse to the DCP 2013, and it is also much easier to obtain.

Out of interest, where in the movie was the issue? Could you give an exact time and/or description of what takes place in the movie (or lines of dialogue spoken) when this happens?

I haven’t burned mine to Bluray yet, but hope to do so soon. (I hoped to check on my PC, but haven’t managed to get any of NJVC’s iso files to play fully in VLC. The extras and menus work fine, but when clicking “Play Film” from the main menu, the film has no picture/sound and the timer progresses at approx. x30 speed.)

I don’t think it was ever finished after TN1 disbanded. However, Harmy released his own grindhouse version of ROTJ based on a 35mm scan. See the first post in this thread for the “Ultimate Guide” on how to obtain it:

Help: looking for... 1997 special editions?

Tehparadox is down for me. Or it’s blocked. Does anyone know if there’s any way to acess it?

It appears to have been down non-stop since 20th June, with some short outages in the preceding days. If you’re looking for Harmy’s “respecialized” edition (1997) of ANH, then the Ultimate Guide gives details of how to obtain the links without an account at the paradoxical place. Here you go. There are 4 images at the following link:
Emperor stills

Two of the emperor front-on; two more of Vader & the emperor side-on. I’ve picked frames with minimal print damage and with different amounts of glow.

Unfortunately, imgur seems to automatically change the file format from png (captured in VLC) to jpg, so the quality will be a little lower. On the plus side, the dimensions are still 1920x1080 (including black bars) and the files are now a lot smaller. Drop me a PM if you need any more.

Could anyone who has the 1080p version upload frames showing the Emperor hologram? Either where Vader is talking to him or where his face is shown.

Would be highly appreciated - thanks.

I’ve saved a few frames for you, but it seems I need to host them on a website; it doesn’t look like I can attach a file from my PC when posting to this forum.

What’s a good file/image sharing site people use here for this sort of thing? Preferably something safe with quick/no registration, and which doesn’t resize images automatically.

Star Wars Trilogy SE bluray color regrade (a WIP)
Time

I like these very much too, DrDre. They blow the Bluray out of the water and then some. Two observations if I may:

  • 8th frame (Obiwan with hood up). The sky in this looks almost completely white - perhaps blown white - even after you lowered the brightness a little. The Bluray appeared to have more detail here: cloudier on the left, more blue on the right.

  • 10th & 22nd frames (Tarkin, Leia, Vader & X-Wing). Blacks look crushed in parts of these frames e.g. Vader’s cloak. This may well have been the case in the Bluray and/or my monitor is to blame!

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

If these chapter titles are included in an mkv (or iso?), how can they be seen afterwards? Do standalone Bluray/DVD players show them anywhere? (I think mine only ever display chapter numbers… But then my hardware is ancient.) Or do the titles only appear if using suitable software - VLC perhaps?

It seems the uloz link for part 01 of the AVCHD version of TESB 2.0 is also broken.

Annoying when that happens… Is this sort of thing just down to some file corruption on the server?

For info, the AVCHD of Harmy’s ESB 2.0 is available on the spleen (Zer0Squared) and Usenet (Mallwalker).

Return of the GOUT - Preservation & Restoration (Released)
Time

I am very interested in these, as I am rather fond of the 2006 GOUT DVDs. Thank you for producing them, JawsTDS!

I understand that the 2006 GOUT DVDs were based on laserdisc transfers, but were of lower quality due to being non-anamorphic. Out of interest, is the video quality of these 720p upscaled versions now better than laserdisc?

Or is it still a case that (even with upscaling) you can’t create information in the picture that wasn’t there to begin with?
