FIXED UNIVERSE: The Expanded Universe fan-editing - THE WHOLE THRAWN TRILOGY IS NOW AVAILABLE
Time

I guess most people aren't into it, but the marvel series is important, historically, because it comes from the days when Lucasfilm was MUCH smaller and Lucas and one or 2 other people were actually guiding the writers and artists. Lucas handpicked artists back then and voiced his displeasure with certain early stories/writers, and at the time anyway, it was the "official" chronicle of what was going on in between the flicks and was made happened DURING the making of the trilogy.

I think boiling Marvel down to the main stories (ignoring some obvious deadline fill-ins and one-offs), compressing the time between Empire and Jedi and fixing the (relatively few) contradictions would be really cool. (it actually wouldn't be that hard. They had to ignore Luke losing his lightsaber after Empire, so the blue one ought to be changed to a "temporary" one he acquired along the way, there are a few he could be using that turned up in previous stories). Just a thought.

Just finished watching the '04 DVD version of Star Wars

About now, we're getting to the part where we get told we're being too picky about the changes and the transfers, they aren't that bad, we can never be satisfied etc.. Now, someone explain to me why these SAME people are always the ones that get completely cunty about the matte lines and R2D2's black squares and all the other terrible flaws in the original versions?

Hey, forget childhood nostalgia or disrespecting a dead guy. It just looks SO SHITTY. Step back for a sec.: it's an outtake of a young guy's head crudely pasted on an old guy's body. The eyelines don't even match, which is 1st year film school shit, so it looks awkward even if you don't know why. and that's... The End of Star Wars? Isn't that enough to hate it?

State of the Trilogy/ annual SW depression

There's a big difference between a desire to see some proper preservation done, and Lucas bashing. And the flat out bashing that DOES go on around here is positively mild and limited, compared to well...everywhere on da internet that isn't TFN. Poor Lucas is a constant punchline out there man, look around. At least this place is celebrating that he did do something great once, something we all want out there more than he does! This forum might be the most genuinely flattering thing ever done about Lucas!

70mm screening

Hmm. They don't physically mix positive in with negative, do they? So, couldn't they have created a new piece of negative off the 85 IP without cutting/damaging it? And if it looked good enough to mix in with camera negative back then and release into theaters without looking obviously different, it must have still looked pretty good, right?

Wow, there can't be that many good 70-mm prints out there. Does anyone know if new ones were created for the 81/82 re-releases?
I saw a 70mm showing around 1990 and it looked FANTASTIC (this was the same festival of 70mm in L.A. where the workprint of Blade Runner was unearthed), but I can't remember if it had "A New Hope" at the beginning. I wonder if that print was privately owned or from Fox.
