4K restoration on Star Wars

But he did say that both the claims of no negatives existing, or that they were conformed to the SE were pretty much bogus.

Nice to have some confirmation for a change isn't it? ;)

This seems like a pretty big deal to me, to have it stated unequivocally that the negative was not physically recut.

Actually, what's interesting is that the Star Wars trailer has the Fox logo, which confirms who the home video rights to each belongs- Fox has Star Wars, Disney has the rest. It's also worth noting that they are willing to work out a deal to release them in some form.

Yeah I don't know why so many people considered the Fox thing some kind of roadblock all of a sudden.

It's been suggested that for certain shots in the original version, the original camera negative of those shots is genuinely gone for good (through some combination of wear and tear, that defective composite stock, or just not surviving the '97 cleaning process). If that's true and they attempted to do a full OCN restoration of the original cut, would something like this project be the best source to plug the holes? Or would they use another method?

This app will probably only appeal to people who want the world sanitized for their protection. (And those who like to control what others read.) If you can't handle a few swear words in print, you might want to rethink why you're reading certain things.

It's as dumb as those video stores and companies that censored the movies they sold.

People have tried to remove books from library shelves because of language, no matter the context in which it's used. Now you don't even have to engage in the tiring chore of finding naughty words, a computer can do it for you!

This. I can't even believe this is a real thing.

Very cool video. And it's especially valuable to really articulate what was unique and worth preserving about the '77 space battle, since it's generally the part of the special edition that is least criticized, and often praised as the most worthwhile aspect of the new version. (I haven't seen GALACTICA in a while, there might be a few shots in there that have that feel. Although I remember Dykstra or somebody else pointing out that those stars had to be much bigger since the majority of people would be watching on fairly small 70s televisions.)

Star Wars: Episode VIII to be directed by Rian Johnson

It will be cool to read the really in-depth, behind the scenes dirt on this period. Some articles out there have mentioned a big power struggle between JJ Abrams (who wanted Bad Robot to steer the ship for all these sequels and spinoffs) and the Disney/Lucasfilm side of things, with Abrams losing.

In the meantime I'm weirdly fascinated by the different reactions out there, especially my favorite crackpot blog, the Prequel Appreciation Society, rejecting the spinoff because the writers didn't pass the Star Wars purity test (they said mean things about the prequels).

Hmm...

"Harrison Ellenshaw One of MY favorites! Mike Verta, again you have done an amazing job. Great credit goes to Ralph McQuarrie for his beautiful production illustration that was the inspiration for this shot."

See, I get nervous about going against the artist's feelings, and he's been quick to give direction on shots in the past.  Still, let's give it another run, shall we?

Whoa, awesome. I saw him talk at a screening of TRON, he was really cool.

I thought this was interesting, over at Hoffman Forums, one of the regulars was talking about a Robert Wise "final cut"of MOTION PICTURE that was actually completed way back then, (and shorter than any other cut) but never saw the light of day. Do we know anything more about this? They're discussing the movie on HTF now but I don't have my email to log in there anymore. (scroll down to comment from "Vidiot")

Now watching, Star Trek, The Motion Picture Blu Ray | Page 3 | Steve Hoffman Music Forums

Always loved that painting. I was recently dumb enough to get sucked into an argument  about how replacing "the cardboard cutout soldiers" (the rebels on the side at the start of the final throne room scene) was one of the best things about the special edition and you have to be blinded by nostalgia to want that restored. I said they aren't cutouts, it's a painting (an Ellenshaw I think?) that looked perfectly swell theatrically on a good print, but they don't want to hear it.
