The Thing (1982) [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED*

I second PDB's request for MM2!

I'm also completely crazy for original Dolby Stereo Surround LD PCM tracks. They usually sound so great with a warmer, fuller feel istead of the thin and hollow sound of the remixes.

As for Andrea's question, I also think Thunderdome needs some touch up. Check these comparison picks.

I'm almost finished my "The Thing" project, and result is almost perfect (using HD-DVD as video and laserdisc as color reference)... what about using BD video and WOWOW color reference to obtain the best version? I mean, we could forgive some DNR on effect shots if we have right colors (or, at least, better colors), do you all agree?

I think it would be perfect to have the BD video with the wowow color timing!

And let's not forget the LD audio!

Hi Andrea,

congratulations on this great project!

It looks like it will be really awesome, I can't wait for it.

Regarding the final release, is there a possibilty you'll release a BD-50 version for higher video bitrate? Or at least a BD-25 version with just the 2 english PCM soundtracks?

I believe with so many soundtracks (as well as the DTS-HD 5.1 coming along) the video is going to be a little bit starved. Specially considering the fantastic color work you've done.

I’ve recently had the chance to get this disc and I’ve watched it twice already.

WOW, I'm was really impressed!

The packing is fantastic! It comes with a slipcover and the artwork employs the original poster art. IMO it’s one of the greatest movie posters of all time!

The menus are also very beautiful. Simple, yet effective. I usually hate menus and disc intros, but if they were all made like this, I wouldn't have a problem with them at all.

Regarding the presentation itself, wow, what can I say?

It must be described as a labor of love!

How refreshing it is to see the US TC for the first time in high definition.! While the DC is not offensive like other revisionisms we get these days, for me, it pales in comparison the US TC.

The cuts are totally seamless and so is the integration of the original LPCM track. Speaking of which, it's such a great and powerful track. It reminds me why I love LD PCM tracks so much. It barely feels like a mono track, as the sound fills the room and it has lots of LFE.

But that’s not all of it. The disc also comes with 2 lossless isolated score tracks, which are fantastic additions. I can only imagine the work involved in 'rescuing' and treating them for this presentation.

Finally there are the soundtrack CDs and they’re such a special treat.

Congratulations to DarkJedi and everyone involved! The more I watch it, the more I love it. Can't wait for your next work!

Thanks for making such a fantastic work available to us enthusiasts!

This was a post I made last december, when I got a copy of the first version of the Conan disc (without the full color re-timing and hi-res audio tracks).

Well, that version got me completely enthusiastic and instantly turned me into a fan of Dark Jedi and his team. I couldn't wait for their next project.

What I couldn't have guessed is that it would be a DEFINITIVE EDITION of Conan: The Barbarian.

This week, I spent some amazing time with the new disc (actually, it's a folder that my BD player reads directly from an external hard drive) and I must say it's absolutely incredible.

What I said before stands truer than ever: this edition can only be described as a labor of love!

I was so thrilled to finally watch my favorite cut of my favorite movie with amazing clarity, proper colors and a spectacular powerful original audio.

I played back several scenes over and over again with the multiple audio tracks, and they're all fantastic. In the end, my preferred version, along with the original audio, was the high resolution DTS-HD MA 2.1 (96kHz) track. It's simply superb!!!

The full lengh score is also something unbelievable. The stuff of dream if you know what I mean.

Now I'm gonna have an even harder time waiting for the next project.

Ack! Apparently NSNA is out of print and on the pricey side.

I guess I probably won't be owning that one any time soon.

Or maybe you can!

NSNA BD is still available in asia and it's the exact same disc that was released in the US.

I just got mine a couple weeks ago from play-asia, but since I posted about this in AVS it now seems they're out of stock.

Fortunately, it's still available at another of my fav. asian stores for US 25,99:

http://www.yesasia.com/global/never-say-never-again-1983-blu-ray-hong-kong-version/1019600734-0-0-0-en/info.html

If you've never orderd from them, don't worry, they're very reliable. I've been shopping with them for years now, and they have great reputation with members of AVS and BD.com.

Well I noticed the clipping issue while I was watching the movie with the Mono track. In the quiet sections the sound dropped out completely. Like, dead silence instead of the usual background noise you get in 'silent' scenes. Then when there was dialog or sound effects, the background noise suddenly came back briefly. It would cut in and out like that. But it wasn't anything to do with the track itself per say. If I muxed the exact same track into an MKV it was totally fine. It was only when I muxed it as a Blu-ray or M2TS that the clipping occurred. And no, there shouldn't be any loss of quality. Basically all I did was make the softer parts slightly louder, without affecting the overall volume of the track.

If you still need a MySpleen invite, I should be able to send you one. Just send me a PM and I'll generate one for you.

Thanks for the reply STENDEC!

Hello STENDEC,

Can you please elaborate a little more on this clipping issue? How did you notice it was happening?

I ask  this because I'm really interested in 'rescuing' some LD PCM tracks I never read anything about this side effect of ripping LD audio before.

Is there any loss of quality on process you performed?

BTW, how can I get an account to download at myspleen? I haven't seen any option to do so.

Could you maybe post it at netload or sendspace?

Thanks in advance!

Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park
Time

Hi,

I've recently joined the forum, and as I mentioned on my introduction at the Alien thread, I'm a great enthusiast of preservation efforts.

Having read this thread from star to finish, I must compliment borisanddoris, ElDonate and everyone who help in this amazing accomplishment. Congratulations to you all, this is huge and I think the possibility of getting original DTS theatrical tracks (and also Laserdiscs for that matter) is something I've only dreamed of before.

If it's not asking too much, I'd really appreciate if someone could provide me with this track so I can mux it with my BD and enjoy this fantastic audio.

Thanks in advance. Best regads!

Hi!

This is my first post on the forum and I'm very exited to find out about this community. I discovered it a couple weeks ago when looking for info on the original LPCM LD track for The Terminator, and I've been obsessively reading the threads since then.

I consider myself a purist in regards to movie presentation and since I'm a great Alien fan I decided this would the thread to start posting, specially in face of this great news about the THX LD PCM 70m sourced track.

msycamore,

having gone through the whole thread, I still have one doubt regarding this PCM track. If you don't mind me asking, is it a bit perfect rip or is it a capture?

If it's indeed the former, then it must be a real gem and must sound incredible. I'm a huge fan of Laserdisc audio and I'm very much interested in preservation projects that tie their PCM tracks with BD video.

Congratulations everyone on these boards for all the great effort and valuable information on all the threads.
