Info: When does fullscreen show more than widescreen?
Time
Is the widescreen more seriously cropped? Well, it depends. If the widescreen has only the top and bottom cropped it can contain more of the original than a fullscreen that has top, bottom and the sides cropped. But as zombie84 said most fullscreen versions are cropped widescreen versions. And the ammount that is cropped can even differ per scene in the same movie.

Red=widescreen, green=fullscreen. See wikipedia

I don't know what other film formats do this (I think none). I would always go for the widescreen versions. And yes, Super 35 is shot on 35mm.

Scientology is going down.

It's not that simple. If Scientology was just about believing in Xenu and Thetans, I'd say, 'fine, be stupid.'

The organization behind Scientology has a well-documented history of suing anyone who tries to make the details of the faith known--the very premise of the 'religion' is a copyrighted work of science fiction. People who were big in the 'church' and got out have wound up dead. They charge members for their services and you MUST pay or you're not a member of their little cult. They basically brainwash their members over and over again until they think that the honestly have to pay out the yin-yang to be happy and mentally healthy, and these people don't even realize that exactly the opposite is happening. (Yes, they were stupid for getting into it in the first place, but it's not an excuse.)

If you want to know more, look it up here: Operation Clambake

I believe I read recently that Scientology was banished from Germany because it didn't fit the criteria of a religious organization.

Well, if you put it like that it sounds like a criminal organization.

And this is a 1993-issue VHS, so it should be unaltered except for "cut off your ear"

Well, the dialogue is missing. It seems al laserdiscs are from september 21st 1994 and later.

A data limit is rediculous. Instead of a data limit they should sell a certain bandwidth without data limit. I've had it for years and works like a charm. Don't sell the bandwidth if your network can't handle it, that's just as good against congestion. Ofcourse during peak hours speed can drop a bit but it should remain within a certain limit, like 10-15% or something. That would be acceptable.

Wanted: HD Jurassic Park - for an edit...
Time
Maybe a bit off topic but because I read this thread I took a good look at my Jurassic Park LaserDisc. In the previous century I started out with a VHS copy but bought the DVD the day it came out. Years later I learned of the SuperBit version with the awesome DTS track. When I bought my Pioneer LaserDisc player for my Star Wars LD to DVD transfer I got a bunch of LDs with it including Jurassic Park. I never played it but I liked it for the cover alone. But somehow because of this thread I thought let's play it and I have to say the audio is just so good. To me it sounds better than the DTS track. For instance the sound of the Brachiosaurus when it is first seen by Grant etc. blew me away. And the thunder that rocked my room when it landed on it's front legs is just awesome. I have LaserDisc 41829 with the Dolby Surround audio track. I have to make a bit accurate capture of it someday. Sorry just had to tell this.

On IMDB it says that for Aladdin not only is Arabian Nights different but also the line "Good tiger, take off and go," was omitted. Apparently it is in the VHS version and not on the DVD version. Maybe the removed line is on LD also. I have the Aladdin LD also and a Pioneer CLD-2950 LD player. I have never seen Aladdin, do you know where in the movie I can check for the line?

Help Wanted: A pitch-corrected Star Wars for PAL?

I got this method from boon23. I think he used it to turn a PAL movie into NTSC without having to mess with the audio. I think he resized the NTSC video to 720x576 at 25 fps and applied 2:3 pulldown to 29.97 (setting: "25 --> 29.97"). It was a long time ago in a thread here at OT.com but I can't remeber what thread.

I turn PAL movies into NTSC, not vice versa. And, yes, it is done by resizing the video and the using DGpulldown to create the framerate of 29.97fps. Works like a charm, but the PAL speedup remains of course, since I don't change the audio and timings are equal.

Yeah, I said turn PAL into NTSC but I screwed up the resizing part. "I think he resized the NTSC video to 720x576 at 25 fps and applied 2:3 pulldown to 29.97" should be "I think he resized the PAL video to 720x480 at 25 fps and applied 2:3 pulldown to 29.97". Sorry about that.

Anyway if you want to turn PAL into NTSC or NTSC into PAL without changing the audio this pulldown method is the way.

BTW, if you have a 23.976 progressive file with pulldown flags and you want to remove the pulldown flags for editing or something you can use DGPuldown also and set the custom setting to "23.976 --> 23.976" and away are the pulldown flags.

Yes, I encoded the file as a progressive 25 fps 720x576. I used DGpulldown to turn it into 23.976 fps progressive file with 25 fps 2:3 pulldown flags. It's very easy to do with the "custom" setting set to "23.976 --> 25" and takes only a few minutes.
But I don't have it anymore, I watched it once and decided I don't want to see the SE ever again.

I really can't stand the audio on the 2004 PAL version. The voices sound weird. So I made a 720x576 23.976 fps/25 fps 2:3 pulldown version just for fun. I don't think it looks like a mess (not on my system anyway). You get the best of both worlds, the higher PAL resolution and the correct NTSC audio! A dvd player will simply recognize it as a PAL dvd but it plays at NTSC speed.
