Star Wars on Super8 (Released)
Time

That price is fine. Are you able to get an estimate on the postage? I can e-mail you my address, if needed.

I'm hoping to get about "80% of what's possible" with this restoration. I'm a perfectionist too, so I need to be careful not to set my goal to 100% if I ever want this to get released.

I know that's an incredibly-loosely-defined goal, but I think keeping it around as a mantra of sorts will go a long way in helping me make some difficult choices for the sake of getting this thing done in a reasonable amount of time.

Aaannnnddddd... here's difficult choice #1: We're going to have to settle on 8bpp rather than 10bpp.

Now, I understand the benefits of working in 10bpp. Trust me, I do. Unfortunately, neither myself nor my color-grading guy are equipped to do anything in 10bpp, so my question is: Can you do something on your end to lessen the impact?

The stabilization function available in a certain post-processing tool with a seven-letter-long name is excellent.

With all the resources available at OT (e.g., Darth Mallwalker's reel change frame numbers, none's shot list spreadsheet, etc.) a proper restoration is very possible to do in a reasonable period of time.

I suppose that this is where I come in. :-)

I'd like to get a small team together if anyone's interested.

Restoration, Preservation, Fan Edit - definitions

The easiest way to do this is continuous distribution, so that the files are stored in many places, and are continually being stored in new places.

If your preservation isn't freely available, it's probably not very well preserved.

Finally! I finally have someone who agrees with me that distribution is necessary for preservation.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

All versions of Star Wars DE are 720p. This resolution was chosen because it's easier on Harmy's computer (takes less time to render, less space on the HD, etc), better matches the upscaled GOUT sources, and in any case, the loss of detail from downrezing the bluray from 1080 to 720 was negligible anyway.

Negligible with a capital "N." You could have fooled me.

Dude, read the thread. Harmy covered this not too long ago.

Read the fucking thread!

Left: Original 1080p from the 2011 BD release.

Right: 2011 BD release downscaled to 720p and then upscaled to 1080p.

The fact of the matter is that the master Lowry used for the 2004 DVDs and 2011 BDs is crap. This is probably due to the fact that Lowry is crap as well.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

Yeah, I tried that before but it really doesn't work. I will however definitely try to improve the quality of those shots for the final release. It was the last thing I did for the WP and I didn't have time to give it a proper treatment.

I don't know if it applies to these shots, as I haven't seen the WP yet, but keep in mind that the P&S LDs are likely to have higher quality models due to the extra scanlines and lack of DVNR.

If you need a model (e.g., a Star Destroyer) and it's fully-intact in one of the P&S copies, then this might be the best way to go.

I can always grab an uncompressed frame from my P&S TESB CAV LD, if needed.

Ideas Wanted: for a [Escape from + Conquest of + Battle for] the Planet of the Apes
Time

Thanks for your input, Bingo.

What do you think about dropping 5 entirely and merging 3 and 4 instead?

I'd like to end it with a bang; e.g., Caesar saying "... and that day is upon you... NOW!" and then fade to black when the apes start cheering.

I'd like to cut as much from 3 as possible; only leaving in what's necessary to setup the baby-Caesar plot.

The problem, of course, is coming up with a good way to transition from baby-Caesar to adult-Caesar.

I think the Planet of the Apes would work better a trilogy than a pentalogy.

IMO, the last three films are simply too weak and contain too much filter. The core story (the rise of Caesar, the downfall of man, etc.) is valuable, however, and I believe it would work better if they were somehow combined into one film.

I’m open to ideas. If you’re interested, then please contribute some!
