Info: Something that might interest folks here..."ROTJ" Editdroid Laserdisc Footage

It's exactly these kind of internet shenanigans that make some contributors to projects around here continue to remain anonymous.

Bad enough my pal Jaxxon has recurring dreams about the "scary bearded man in flannel" knocking on his door with a couple THX robot cops in tow. ;)

Is this the same Jaxxon that provided Puggo with the 16mm prints?

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

I just hope it's not delayed three months in Japan like every geek movie seems to be doing lately.  The hobbit was the only movie we got at the same time last year, and now the second one isn't even coming out 'till the end of February.  Japan is constantly the last country in the world to get movies, usually two months after the second to last country.

Fingers crossed.

If you don't mind me asking... are you a citizen of Japan?

PS78: Pre-ANH Star Wars Bootleg VHS from 1978 ***"RAW" DVD RELEASED***
Time

Would anyone like to help me GOUT-sync PS78?

I'm synchronizing it to a 3:2-pulldowned GOUT and it's coming out great so far, but there are a few instances where freezing or deleting a frame or two improves the sync considerably. It can't be perfect because the source is truly 29.97fps and can't be IVTC'd.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

OK, don't you guys think it's time to move the discussion to that thread? Or at least DeEd ROTJ, since that is the only one I need the HQ footage for. It's not that I don't appreciate the effort, I really really do, since I really want to use that 720p video for Jedi v2.0 but it just doesn't make any sense to be discussing it in this thread.

OK, no problem.

High-End video capture cards
Time

metaleonid: Are you capturing to an SSD? What does the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test say?

Using an SSD (or a nice RAID setup) is more-or-less a requirement when capturing with any of the Blackmagic capture devices.

In Blackmagic Media Express with the Blackmagic Intensity Pro, at least, there's a setting to stop the capture if any frames are dropped. You can also set it to output black frames in place of dropped ones.

Also, FWIW, the s-video input on the Blackmagic Intensity Pro looks just as good as the component input. I can't tell the difference.

DRM removal isn't working for me either. I'm using an iPhone (5.1.1), Requiem 3.3.6, and iTunes 10.5.2.11 on a PC. The problem is that this particular ebook was made for iPad only, so I can't authenticate for use on my iPhone. Requiem says:

The following files could not be decrypted: Making of Star Wars (Enhanced.ibooks(Key not found. Can you read this book?)

I'm guessing we need an iPad.

OK. I'm willing to use mine if someone can tell me how to backup my SW:KOTOR save-file (iOS SW:KOTOR, that is).

Time to ditch H.264? H.265 is here!

H.265/HEVC is said to double the data compression ratio compared to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC at the same level of video quality. It can alternatively be used to provide substantially improved video quality at the same bit rate.

I'm so excited!

Can someone here compare it against x264 and post some comparison images?

Pioneer HLD-X9 settings

I captured "Beauty and the Beast" with these settings:

  • Y/C   : C-Wide (others are Normal and HR)
  • 3D.Y/C: 2      (0 min, 8 max)
  • 3D.YNR: 2      (0 min, 8 max)
  • 3D.CNR: 2      (0 min, 8 max)

the result is quite good.

About comb filter: I tried everything I have at home (laserdisc composite and S-video out in combination with or without three different DVD recorder) but nothing gives me the quality I'm looking for...

The last resource will be the phase-inversion trick... poita, if you really had positive results, could you please explain how did you do it?

Have you considered getting a Pioneer DVR-550?

poita did some tests on it in the past and determined that it's great for PAL: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Laserdisc-players-screenshot-comparison/post/633778/#TopicPost633778

There is so much in that last explanation that assumes a certain level of knowledge on my part, (MITM'ing on the wire, SSL encryption, NZB's, seeding,) that I feel like I just need to quit while I'm ahead and find a less hardcore place to learn this stuff.  Seriously, thanks for the answers.  If someone is willing to spend a little time and spell this all out for me step by step, please feel free to private message me.

I'm sorry!

I usually expect a certain level of autodidacticism around these parts. We're all geeks, right?! :-)

I'm more-than-willing to help if you choose to go down the Usenet route. Drop me a PM if you do.

Everything CatBus said is true, KilroyMcFadden.

My own 2c is that if you want to be a bit safer, pay $5 for a 3-day account on usenetserver.com, download BinReader and enable SSL encryption, and then grab as many fan-films from Usenet as you want. (NZB.cc and NZBClub.com are great places to search for and download NZBs.)

BinReader is a lot easier to setup than most BitTorrent clients and with SSL encryption it's nearly-impossible to figure out what you downloaded by just MITM'ing on the wire. Plus, there's no seeding required (Usenet is centralized rather than p2p) and the speeds are almost-always faster than what you can get with most private BitTorrent trackers. I get ~7MiB/s down with my usenetserver.com account.

Hell, my wife downloads stuff from Usenet everyday and she's not "technical".

Idea: Darkly Dawns the Duck - Original Broadcast Version - a preservation?
Time

I have a Panasonic AG-1980 S-VHS VCR, but I no longer have my Leitch DPS-290. I also have a Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD recorder.

I can get a DPS-465 for ~$60, but I'm pretty short on cash right now.

Can we crowdsource the funds?

In return, I'll transfer any VHS ya'll want to DVD.

JEDIT: I forgot to mention that the DPS-465 can chew through Macrovision.

Ask the member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints AKA Interrogate the Mormon
Time

darth_ender: How do I keep the Mormons away? I don't have any problem with them and I'm polite-to-a-fault (e.g., I don't argue with them), but I don't want to waste my time (sometimes as much as 15 minutes!) speaking to them in my doorway.

I'm a Tooth Fairy Agnostic (a.k.a. "strong agnosticism") and I have no interest in changing my beliefs or the beliefs of anyone else.

I just don't want them ringing my doorbell anymore.

Are there any magic words I can post on my door that most Mormons will respect?
