Before I take a guess, question: Does your player show crosstalk on other CLV titles?

No, not what I have noticed. The level of chroma noise is also a lot worse than on other CLV titles that I own and especially CAV titles. I guess the player could need an adjustment, it's also possible other players are better to deal with the crosstalk if it is indeed present in this pressing. That's why I'm curious if you guys had noticed it on your copies.

Yep, here too. It's just a sloppy pressing, unfortunately.

@ poita: Yes, I tried both an average and a multi-cap median and found the latter was much more successfull gettin rid of the crosstalk - "mastering defect" (which I'm still not entirely sure about is a mastering flaw or if it's due to a faulty player.) Please confirm, AntcuFaalb or Mallwalker. I think I even tried average the median.

Yep, film is grainy. You can see how much detail the noise removal, well, removed, in the GOUT image. Look at Obi-Wan's face.

I was just about to say that!  It's surprising to see how blurry his face looks in that gout shot.  Did you do this with your new scanner?  Can you post a pic in full resolution somewhere?

I can post a full resolution scan, it will be about 100MB, what is the best place to host the image?

To be fair, saying:

I'm actually not a big fan of the format at all and I can't wait to sell most of my stuff when I'm done.

... is a little incendiary on an enthusiast-based forum.

I recently joined a forum dedicated to audio cassettes, and caught a forum post from someone saying how bad MP3 audio sounded. Now I'm a big fan of audio cassettes for nostalgia reasons, but I would never claim that they "sound better" than MP3. Nonetheless, I'm not going to start arguing about it over there.

This is an excellent point. I immediately regretted posting that, but chose not to edit it out of existence for fear that that would do even more damage.

Unfortunately for me, I think my side of the argument would have been better received if I hadn't posted that.

Truly an "ughhhhh" moment for me.

No ignore function?

There might be. I haven't looked into that yet.

I'm not sure how much of the LDDb community agrees with them, so I'm not even sure if it's worthwhile to stick around.

I attempted to bring a few of the more "technical" members over to AMPS, but I think that the limited exposure (due to the locked-down nature of AMPS) made them go back to posting on LDDb exclusively.

Every forum has it's jerks?

That's probably the best explanation I'll get, unfortunately. :-(

Those two are really trying to run us out of there. I somehow became the representative of the "more technically-minded Laserdisc people" and, in consequence, I'm being blamed for the derailment of the entire forum.

My #1 beef at the moment is that those two members seem to be incapable of posting a coherent rebuttal. Furthermore, I don't even think that they read what I write. They just pop in, bitch & complain, and leave.

The level of discourse is so low that I feel as if I'm debating with indignant children rather than middle-aged men.

2. http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?p=48375#p48375

Can someone please read through the mini-flamewars and explain why those with the opposing viewpoint (rein-o, firehorse_44) so often conclude that peaceful coexistence is not an option?

I'm at my wits' end and I'm almost ready to start bitchin'.

Well, I thought about that, and the foreign languages wouldn't be a problem, because when selecting tracks with remote, you can see the language of the track but then you have 4 different commentaries, an isolated score track, commentary for blind and stuff, which all need description.

The commentary for the blind doesn't need a description

Well, an audio one would be helpful (e.g., "This is the commentary for the blind audio track!"), but how would a blind person navigate to it to find it?

Warmer, warmer, warmer, you're on fire!, ice cold

lol

That makes sense. So if there are no truly black frames because of the gain, could part of a frame be used, such as the black areas around the Lucasfilm logo?

There are probably a few truly black frames in sequences with lots of black frames; e.g., fades to black.

I'll look around sometime soon.

The fade-to-black doesn't actually fade to black on VLC for me. It just crosscuts with a green haze or skips some frames altogether. That's the unstable video I guess. But any other point where the frame is mostly black, such as the end of the title crawl, the image suddenly lightens to white. Why would that be?

The transfer from film to VHS way back in 77-78 was accomplished by a method that looks very much like time-compression. A good analogy would be transferring 24p film to 59.94i video by projecting the film on a wall at 24 frames per second and recording it with an NTSC video camera at 59.94 fields per second.

This process results in each and every frame being an average of several of its temporal neighbors.

In consequence, bright->dark shot-changes are blown-out and dark->bright shot-changes are crushed for the first few frames until the "average" events out to the overall brightness of the shot. Rinse, repeat.

Does this make any sense?

EDIT: Also, some shot-changes just go crazy. I imagine that this is due to the automatic gain circuitry in the VCR used to make the copy (remember: this tape is 2nd gen) from the master.

I really hope they're able to work out the plethora of other licensing issues that plague the series and release it completely uncut. That would be icing on the cake, and I'd definitely buy it.

You mean like the cameos, and some issue about who owns the design of that Batmobile?

I'd like to know this as well. I didn't know anything had been cut from the show in recent years...

Thank you so much for this resource AntcuFaalb, for the most part the colors are great, and it's nice to see that there appears to be more color consistency between shots than even in the Blu-ray.

However I did notice a heavy green in the shadows of most shots in the movie. Sometimes this looks accurate to my sources, but sometimes it seems like fading or something. In your opinion, do you think the film could have been this green, or did something happen along the line?

The green cast is in every one of my captures of PS78, unfortunately. (My capture setups are all calibrated to an accurate reference source, so it's not a problem on my end.)

I'm not sure what caused it, but I definitely don't think that the film could have been that green. It must have happened sometime during the initial transfer back in 1978.

We might be able to get rid of it in a way that doesn't interfere with the accuracy of the colors. Step #1 would be for us to find a completely black frame from the film.

The fade-to-black when Luke takes C-3PO and R2-D2 into the homestead would probably work well.

Let me know if you're interesting in moving past this point.
