Oh, why do I bother posting. I'll shut up until I get my own Star Wars print, like all the other cool guys.
We all say stupid shit every now and then. It happens.
Honestly, nobody will care about this drama in a few days, so there's no need to stop posting.
Just consider this a learning experience and move on.
The last thing our (relatively) small community needs is fewer productive members.

No rush of course. But a small preview would be awesome, I don't do Usenet. :C
That's fine. The frames aren't huge, so I won't be posting the samples to Usenet. I'll probably just use imgur.
If I'm not mistaken imgur recompresses your images on upload, doesn't it? Maybe just use Dropbox or something...
Ah, I didn't know that! Do you know if they lossily-compress PNGs?
Imgur will recompress any non-animated image over 1 MB to a jpg.
Yuck. I didn't know that. Thanks for the tip.
Dropbox it is! :-)

What's up with the letter 'a' in "...that can save her people..." ? Looks like a digital artifact to me.
It looks like the `a' from the previous frame (slightly lower) got merged with the next one (slightly higher).

So he's going to start providing regular updates here again? Cool.
IDK, maybe. He will, at least, be regularly updating the Legacy forum (or so I'm told).

My question is this - why come back now with a random post about the crawl?
He's starting from the beginning with updates on each "portion" as the restoration progresses.

I've built many (>10) computers over the years and my experience has been generally good.
With that being said, my 2¢ (this won't matter to you, Harmy) is to watch out for noisy PSUs and noisy motherboard designs. Most PSUs–even expensive ones–are noisy buckets of crap. It's supposedly a basic fact of SMPS, but I knew nothing about this prior to building my most recent PC and the noise on the PCI-express bus was so bad that you could easily see it in my test captures with my Blackmagic Intensity Pro. (This setup has been scrapped for parts. None of these noisy captures have made it into the wild.)
The real kicker is that there's no easy way to know if your "expensive" parts are noisy buckets of crap or not. It's a crap shoot (pun intended).

Could you upload a few untouched shots? They're probably ridiculously huge, but maybe a 10 of them? :)
Sure, but I won't be able to get around to this until Friday/Saturday as well.
Tonight (and possibly tomorrow) will be quite busy for me.

Blu-ray.com has deleted my account twice (I tried a second time), leaving no trace of it behind.
In both cases I didn't even have enough time to make a single post. I can't even try to recover my password because "You have not entered an email address that we recognize".
This is such bullshit.
on what grounds did they delete your account? I have an account there, they have never deleted it.
That's what's weird. My account wasn't deleted and I wasn't banned. It simply disappeared without a trace, as if it never existed in the first place. o_O
It's alive! :-D
I plan to copy it to my own HDD on Friday/Saturday and until then it will stay safe-and-sound packaged in a HDD shipping box with anti-static wrapping as well.
After that I'll work on getting everything on Usenet.
I'm willing to do HDD->HDD copies, but with the following requirements:
1. >=1TB SATA drive (possibly 750GB, but I'll have to check first)
2. You pay shipping costs, both ways
3. It must be sent in reusable packaging

Keep in mind that Mike's very open about his identity, and even assuming he didn't get outright arrested for what you're asking him to do (because "reasons" include "it's illegal"), his career would be most definitely and negatively impacted.
Expanding on this a bit: mverta is an "industry insider". He has worked for LFL in the past and, IIRC, remains in close contact with some people there.
Releasing Legacy would destroy his reputation and likely lead to legal action not only for himself, but for the numerous people (e.g., former print owners, foreign university* employees) directly and indirectly involved in the Legacy project. This legal action would definitely prevent him from working on movies in the future and would probably result in fines and jail-time.
I love Star Wars, but I don't love Star Wars enough to think it's acceptable for someone to suffer the aforementioned consequences just so I can see his preservation.

Finding out what one or two devices can do is interesting, but it doesn't necessarily tell you what the lowest common denominator is.
True, true.
Ugh, DVD is such a crummy format! >:-{

Leaving the forum for awhile. See y'all.
We'll miss you!
Good point(s), CatBus. I'll have to ponder this further.
It might be worthwhile for us to come up with a quick test pattern.
How's the following?
720: {red 8px} {green 8px} {blue 688px} {green 8px} {red 8px}
704: {red 8px} {green 8px} {blue 672px} {green 8px} {red 8px}
The most-recently-sent HDD has arrived!
I'll try to get it connected tonight.
16:9 anamorphic 704x480 is supported by the DVD spec. Many websites incorrectly claim that it's not.
Right now it's the most "real world"-compatible way to encode anamorphic content with MPEG2. I can't think of any downside other than misinformed people PMing you to (incorrectly) claim that "you did it the wrong way".
Some non-pro encoders screw this up, but HCenc handles it just fine. Which MPEG2 encoder are you using?
JEDIT: I forgot to mention that the official PAR is 40:33 for both 704x480 and 720x480 MPEG2 streams. All DVD-compliant players are supposed to crop 8px from the left and right of a 720x480 stream prior to stretching, but many don't, as you've noticed. :-/
CatBus said:
To the contrary, if one of the goals of the purchase is to avoid the sort of encoding errors that can result from a machine running too hot or just trying to squeeze too much performance out of the machine, going with a solid, reliable, if somewhat conservative machine from a major manufacturer may actually be beneficial.
Agreed!

@AntcuFaalb: Well, I should be meeting to discuss the computer with my friend on Friday or over the weekend, so I'll have more detailed info then - Right now, I know I had something like this in mind, which costs around $2000 here, but if I built it myself, it would probably come much cheaper, plus I probably wouldn't need such a powerful graphics card and I wouldn't need a Blu-Ray drive (I already have an external one) and I definitely wouldn't need the designer case.
That looks like a solid machine!
I don't think any of us will react negatively if you decide to go with a big manufacturer like HP, so don't feel obligated to cut corners!
Just get whatever you think is best! :-)

8K Mauve-ray
Man, try to stay current with the times! 8K Mauve-ray is ancient trash. Optical media? Hooey!
I watch losslessly-compressed 64K movies with my new Cinco OpticNerveViewMaster™. Really... who needs eyes when you've got Cinco?

I already have HD DVD projects in the plan, these are what I am tossing around,
Feast Unrated (Bonus feature having both parts 2 & 3 DVD video)
The Dukes of Hazzard Unrated
Black Christmas Unrated
Midnight RunMidnight Run gets my vote.
Same here.
Harmy: Do you have any idea what the specs of your new machine will be? Can you share them here, please?
