[@ AntcuFaalb - There's only so much that can be done with laserdisc, but I've been impressed at your approach tantalizingly revealed in assorted threads. When you've finished, I hope you will detail your finalized procedure and equipment chain for those of us who wish to duplicate your results. Seeing your raw cap(s) and finished capture would be awesome! Any time-frame on this?]

It's funny you mention this now. I plan to re-capture all 3 this weekend with my new sexy Leitch DPS-575.

The full chain is now: Runco LJR-II =(BNC)=> Leitch DPS-575 =(SDI)=> Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder =(Thunderbolt) => Late 2012 Mac mini.

The 3D comb filter in the DPS-575 is amazing.

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?

Maybe 35mm prints have more visible detail, but what about the color timing?

IB Technicolor prints take a long time to fade. A really, really, really long time.

So long that it's safe to say that (color-wise, at least) they look exactly as they did in 1977/8.

Eastman Kodak prints... now that's a different story.

So on one hand I'd love to see new stunning transfers for these three movies, on the other hand I realistically think there are not many chances of seeing state of the art HD remaster without scanning proper source material.

It has been demonstrated that the '77 35mm IB Technicolor release prints have more visible detail than what's available on the current BD.

Disney can acquire (100% of them are in the hands of collectors currently) one and use it as the basis of restoration or they can go back to one of the IP or IN prints they have lying around in the archives and use that.

There's absolutely no need to go back to the negative. It would be nice, yes, but there's enough evidence now for me to say with confidence that it's not a requirement.

STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread

Star Wars done in a style similar to Cowboy Bebop would be a huge hit. People would go nuts for it. I would hope a Japanese studio develops it. They are doing animation on a level that America just doesn't do anymore. Even our cartoons are done in computer programs that do all the hard work for us.

I share your appreciation for non-CGI animation, but do know that computer programs most certainly do not do "all the hard work" for modern animators.

Standards have risen. The work is still fucking grueling.

The same goes for anabolic/androgenic steroid use. Professional bodybuilders have to work their asses off to look the way they do in competition. Steroids are not magic and neither are computers.

'Raiders of the Lost Ark' - bluray and colour timing changes (Released)
Time

I've now done lots of still comparisons with WOWOW vs. grade-matched BD and I can honestly say that the WOWOW, surprisingly, has more detail.

The software I use for the MatchGrade also has a basic image registration algorithm, so the stills used for my comparison were spatially aligned rather well.

The difference is striking.

I'd like to despecialize the WOWOW, but I can't without access to that 10 year old 1080i MPEG-2 ABC TV broadcast version capture. I'm still digging, but I haven't had any luck yet.

For now we may have to settle on the 2003 "enhanced" version.

I still have to remove the burned-in JP subs from those shots. I may seek outside help to get it done well.

Which means these alterations so far...

* Pan American Clipper Matte Painting: DVD / BBC HD / WOWOW / Canal + HD

* Flight to Nepal: DVD (??? BBC HD / Canal + HD ???)

* Cliff Matte: BBC HD

* Lamppost Matte: BD

(For now) assuming color, reframing, burned-in subtitles, and audio changes are not important, then does that mean that the only altered shot in the WOWOW is the clipper one?
