Good luck with that.

All you need to do is get every piece of factual information from every post on OT.com and every link ever linked to and put it in one place in a nice user-friendly searchable format.

After that, perfecting cold-fusion, time travel and light-speed travel will be a walk in the park!!

I was up for this 7 years ago and I am still up for it now if required and there is enough interest.

Why don't we start small here? Let's collect a list of posts that would be wiki-worthy.

  1. russs15's GOUT-sync Post ;-p
  2. Darth Mallwalker's Reel Lengths Post
  3. none's Shot List Spreadsheet Post
  4. none's Credits & Leaders Post
  5. negative1's GOUT Frame-data Post
  6. negative1's Cropping Post

I think the data-collection problem will be a bit easier when we have categories (and sub-categories and so on...) in which to organize the data.

RemoveDirtMC2  is used in the script I posted in post 2 or 3.  The workflow for the script is:

Stabilization (Depanestimate/Depanstabilize)

Dirt Removal (RemovedirtMC or RemovedirtMC2 depending on version)

Degraining (Mvanalysemulti/MVdegrainmulti)

optional interpolation(Manalyse/Mflowfps)

optional color adjustments (Coloryuv/autolevels/levels)

There are other parameters for sharpening and blurring but that's the basic gist of things.

Here's a page that has collected a lot of the motion comepensated dirt removers.  You'll notice removedirtmc is now up to version 4 and even removedirthq.  Each one uses the prior version to build upon, I think. So you can't call removedirtmc4 without also having 1,2, and 3.

I've seen that page before. The RemoveDirtMC2 has a bug. That is, it says "SelectEvery(clipb, 7, 1)", but it should say "SelectEvery(clipb, 7, 3)". Similarly, it says "SelectEvery(clipb, 5, 1)", but it should say "SelectEvery(clipb, 5, 2)". It only works because "SelectEvery(clipb, 3, 1)" makes sense for a value of 3 and everything else is commented-out.

Furthermore, I'm not too fond of the RemoveDirt function that RemoveDirtMC2 calls. The final call to RemoveGrain removes too much detail. If you use it on the infamous speeder shot in GOUT ANH, you'll see small background objects pseudo-randomly turn on and off.

My version fixes the aforementioned bug and manages to use (internally) a RemoveDirt that preserves detail. It's not perfect, but it's the best I've been able to cobble together from the various sources on the WWW.

However, the site only lasted a few months, I think the fact that it included download links led to it receiving a C&D from Lucasfilm relating to daveytod's The Clones Revealed.

I only had a brief mention of The Clones Revealed on GTF and I got the same C&D!!!!

I think more of a knowledge bank is what is needed and maybe even omit the preservation/transfer work already done if that could be percieved as a problem.

If there was one place that had all the differences in all releases of all films in all formats and languages, that would be amazing. The nearest place to that is here but not too easily searchable.

A good example is how many threads are titled around ESB 70mm differences? At least three or four the last time I looked as well as all the other references in other threads. These are the sort of things I would like to see in a wiki.

Agreed except for one minor nitpick: I do see value in including information on the preservation/transfer work that's been done. No download-hyperlinks, but stuff like "this frame is missing in X" would be useful.

Info Wanted: Question about availability of the OOT preservations?
Time

Gorramnerd said:

Hey everyone...I'm new, and forgive me if this is a stupid question...but I've been looking around...and between years and years of time from posts, or the fact that Demonoid is now gone, I think this needs to be asked.

I'm looking to find out which of the OT restorations are still available...if they can be found on a torrent site, that would be the best, but I'll do what it takes to find a good copy of the real Star Wars trilogy, Special Edition-free...I have a feeling I'm not the only one who's wanted to ask this...

So, can anyone help this newbie out?

Hi, Gorramnerd, and welcome to the forum. Many of the releases are available on MySpleen (a private BitTorrent tracker) and on Usenet (at alt.binaries.starwars).

I suggest searching for a.b.starwars on NZB.cc to see what's available on Usenet. If your ISP doesn't offer Usenet access, a premium 3-day account (with SSL encryption) can be obtained from, e.g., UsenetServer.com for $5. (I can download at a consistent ~5.1 MB/s (yes, Megabyte) with UsenetServer.com, but I'm sure their competitors offer similar speeds, so feel free to shop around.)

If you can't find what you need there, I may be able to give you one of my MySpleen invitations, but please try to exhaust Usenet (and other options) first.

Here's the motion-compensated dirt removal function I was using for the now-defunct SWOLT project.

Warning: It cleans excellently while preserving detail, but don't use it for any shots containing stars.

Note 1: You may want to set clmodeY to 18. See the RemoveGrain manual for explanations of what the different modes do and what the ups/downs of each one are.

Note 2: It only works on clips in planar color-spaces; e.g., YV12. Furthermore, it won't clean frames at scene-changes.

cool, thanks will check it out..

do you have any video examples of this

that you used?

later

-1

I do not. I only have the still examples in my SWOLT Progress thread.

I can use the JSC to generate a small sample when I get home, but I have a better idea: upload a particularly dirty shot and I'll re-upload it with the RemoveDirtMC function applied. Sound good?

Lossless audio (at least the 5.1) will be available for separate download later.

Here are some more comparisons between v1.0 and Remastered.

The site however compressed the pictures, so there are a lot of compression artefacts, which are not present in the film

- compare this (imgshack) and this (picasa)

so I also uploaded a folder with all the pictures in their original form (high quality Jpeg):

http://www.uloz.to/22762346/compar-v1-vs-v2-rar

I recommend watching it as a fullscreen presentation in both cases.

What source did you use for the infamous speeder shot?

What do you think?

I think you've bitten off more than I could chew.
5xPS78 raw uploads, 7FN uploads, not to mention all those VHS you've been buying. You'll burn out.

Wiki should be searchable, so . . . not here.
CRC/MD5/SHA-whatever haven't been welcome here either

You're probably right. I'll put the wiki on the back-burner for now.

The 7FN uploads shouldn't be an issue. I have more than enough bandwidth to handle that.

PS78 is a lot of work. The other VHS tapes will probably take a long time to do.

Regarding CRC/MD5/SHA: do you mean the signatures aren't allowed here? If so, that's fine, as I was just discussing the algorithms themselves.

My Galactic Trade Federation website was done years ago to try to make sense of all the preservations of the day. My more recent OT.com posts on audio dialogue differences and GOUT synced sources have attempted to do the same thing so I think something is needed.

A properly designed and regularly updated WIKI would be perfect but getting people to do it is another story......

I have been trying to give away the GTF site for years with no interest to date.

Maybe we can use GTF as a base for a wiki and archive-off a copy of it to download.

If enough people are interested in a wiki, would you be interested in helping me transfer information to it?

I know we have the Fan Project Wiki, but this idea is different.

Our understanding of the Star Wars trilogy is slowly becoming its own discipline. If you consider none’s shot spreadsheet, Darth Mallwalker’s reel length list, and other similar OT threads, you’ll see what I mean.

This large body of information is all stored on this forum and, despite the effectiveness of “site:originaltrilogy.com XXX” searches, can be sometimes difficult to find and/or update.

I think we need a wiki to:

  • Keep this information separate from the discussion(s)
  • Make this information searchable and updatable

What do <span style=“text-decoration: underline;”>you</span> think?

I don't know what MD5 is but the uploader for kickass and bay told me he had to remove some files from the subtitle folder because with them the torrent didn't work. Those files are basically inconsequential to the release.

MD5 and SHA are used to check the integrity of a file. If two files has the same MD5 or SHA sum, then they are the same file byte per byte. If they doesn't match, they are not the same exact file.

They are useful for security and cryptoanalysis, and many software developers like Microsoft and Linux distros publish the MD5 and SHA sums of their releases.

Minor nitpick: Hash collisions are unlikely, but can occur, as non-"perfect" hashing algorithms are surjective functions. That is, it's rare, but you can have two files hash to the same value. This is less likely with MD5 and the SHA family than, e.g., CRC-32.

Thank you for preserving this important piece of history and important reference as to how the colors on Star Wars looked on unfaded prints of the day.  This is definitely the highest quality 1970s tape reference yet discovered and it is great to see all of the money and time you have put into getting the most out of it:)

Thank you! Encouragement like this really keeps me going :-)
