Ideas, Info & Help Wanted: a 16mm Telecine-Projector Project
Time

I'm the other member, if anyone interested doesn't already know.

Our biggest challenge right now is figuring out a way to send a signal from the projector when a new frame is displayed.

My current idea is to use the magnet and sensor from a bicycle odometer (a.k.a., bicycle computer) by connecting it to something that revolves once for each frame.

If I may, the floor and hallway look dead, suffering from held grain, as if you created a single clean master frame of those areas to replace as much of each dirty frame as possible. The trick is to make several of those, using different source frames to make them, and use a different one each time you paint out a piece of dirt. That way the grain is different for every cleaned frame. I hope this came across constructively! :)

Maybe it just needs a touch of artificial grain? Otherwise, I still think it looks great.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean. I always said I'd leave the wipes, because they don't really change anything and recreating them faithfully would require an original source, which at this point would mean the GOUT and from what I can tell, there isn't really any significant drop in quality during wipes on the IB print, except maybe a little more dirt, which would get cleaned up in a digital restoration anyway.

You answered my question. :-) Thanks!

The problem wouldn't really be in cost, but in finding a lab that would do it. MVerta knows of one, but last I checked it was close to $3-4000 to do a transfer. Granted, that would be for a first class transfer, but it is still nothing to sneeze at. Otherwise, a pool of money could go to buying one of the HD units like Puggo has - those run about $5000, IIRC.

I'll definitely keep people posted on the projector process. I wonder if I should start a new thread?

Definitely start a new thread, specifically for the homemade telecine machine.

It would help us by getting suggestions from other people and our design might help others in the future; if we ever get it working, that is.

[OUT - ruLes] Original Unaltered Trilogy restored using Laserdisc editions - A New Hope (Released)

Original Unaltered Trilogy restored using Laserdisc editions

Episode IV - Star Wars: A New Hope

Project mission: restore the Original Unaltered Trilogy using audio and video from various Laserdisc editions.

Video sources: analog video captured directly from Laserdiscs; other analog sources are admitted (VHS, CED, VHD, Beta etc.) only if the material is not present on the Laserdisc format.

Audio sources: analog audio and uncompressed PCM captured directly from Laserdiscs; other analog sources are admitted (like vynil) only if the material is not present on the Laserdisc format.

Subtitles sources: to be decided; Project Threepio seems the logical way.

Project prohibition: use DVD, BD, HDTV or other audio or video from any digital sources.

(other info will follow on the next posts)

Do you need any help?

Also, are you going to be releasing the captures unfiltered? (I'm not asking if they're going to be the raw captures. I'm just asking if you plan to do anything to them besides MPEG-2 encoding.)

Thanks a lot guys!

Small update: Even if we will focus on fixing color errors, we've decided to include at least some fixes for some of the worst frames in SW. Like the end of the Tantive scene where Vader walks past the camera and the bottom of the screen flashes yellow before it cuts to the star destroyer in space.

That's the end of IP reel #1!

005: Certain explosions/flashes during reel #1 of ANH arrive one frame early (or late) in the 97SE.

I discovered these by running a scene-change-detection algorithm on reel #1 of GOUT and 97SE (TB) and diff'ing the results.

Are these one-frame differences something you're interested in recording?
I've got some frame diffences already, but I'm not sure at this point. It's still a sign of a change, but we could also say "all this stuff was redone"...

That would probably work best. Something like: "Here's a list of minor one-frame differences...".

Anyway, do you have any idea why these changes are present? Also, are they changes? Errors? Recompositing?

I don't think any frames were dropped (or added) because 97SE ANH's reel #1 has the same number of frames as GOUT ANH's reel #1.

TB is sorely lacking in seeders on MySpleen. I'm sure any help in that respect would be greatly appreciated.

If I had the TB I'd help you out but I do not.  I wasn't aware that anyone was even uploading it.....shows you how much attention I've paid to the spleen lately.

;)

Don't worry about it! Actually, msycamore's (video-only) upload is helping. :-)
