Since when did ROTJ become less highly regarded than even Episodes II or III?

Before I make too many enemies in this thread, I have to say that I love the design of the royal guards, the shuttle and the handiwork behind the biggest puppet ever; Jabba, lovely creation. I also enjoy Ian's Emperor even though I expected something else.

And to bring this back to the threads original question, tell you the truth I have not seen episode II and III in their entirety, only clips and segments here and there, quite hard to avoid. But I'm pretty sure already from what I've seen that Jedi doesn't sink as low as those two in my view. I promised myself that I never was going to watch another after Phantom Mence but now a friend of mine has given me an opportunity to do so and I've sort of mellowed to the idea, and I must admit that I'm actually a bit curious to finally watch them in a morbid way.

I've seen I-III, but I still haven't seen any of the OT SEs besides ANH:R.

[OUT - ruLes] Original Unaltered Trilogy restored using Laserdisc editions - A New Hope (Released)

Upscaling is, IMO, a bad idea. NNEDI3 is good, but in my experience TV and player upscalers are better, and all you're doing is wasting encoded bytes on pixels that don't contain any real information. Keep it at the original resolution, let the encoder spend all its bytes on real detail, and leave upscaling to the playback device.

DE

FWIW, Andrea, I agree with this.

I understand your drive to want to make these LDs look as good as possible, but I think it would be more useful to the community to have each (or, at least, one) of the captures uncropped/unresized at ~DVD9 sizes.

I'm not saying to upload the raw captures! I just think that unaltered DVD9s of your captures would go a long way and I'm sure they'd be greatly appreciated.

Info Wanted: From Star Wars to Jedi - any available in higher quality than the lds?

Not for the moment, I don't think. There must be a reason why most of the preservations come from there. More than happy to be wrong, of course. If the subtitles bother you that much you could probably do some work on a VHS copy with your deck. I wouldn't think it could surpass laserdisc just based on resolution, but you seem to have worked wonders on your PB78 so I dunno.

I was actually planning to preserve my sealed VHS copy of it!

Should I IVTC it?

I think what it really comes down to is whether you are looking for the good or the bad when you're watching these movies. With the prequels, the lameness tends to override the good parts when you are trying to enjoy them, but watching ROTJ, there is so much good here if you are looking for it and not ways to tear it down. More than tolerable IMO. It has jaw-dropping moments. That is why so many people have said it was their favorite for so many years. I agree that it has become trendy to bash ROTJ, but I think it has a lot to offer and a very cool ending to the trilogy. And in terms of moral lesson it is the very best of the OT, hands down.

My primary reason for ROTJ being my favorite of the three is that it's silly enough to have a sequence like "Yub Nub".

Not sure if serious.

I'm quite serious.

none: Why don't we all agree on a "standard" GOUT?

ReJig can demux the video from a DVD if provided with an IFO. It stores the entire video stream in an m2v container. Yes, the entire movie.

I have created an m2v and accompanying d2v using ReJig and DGIndex, respectively.

Would you be interested in working together on this? If so, I can provide you with my m2v and d2v to work with as a base.

My m2v/d2v matches up with Darth Mallwalker's IP reel frame numbers, FWIW.

PS78: Pre-ANH Star Wars Bootleg VHS from 1978 ***"RAW" DVD RELEASED***

There is no point in using colorbars from another source, even if it is of similar vintage. Colorbars are only meaningful if they were recorded on the same equipment on the same tape using the same dial settings as were used to dub the main program. In theory, all color bars should be the same, but there is a huge equipment and human error factor from dub to dub.

Ah, that makes sense! Thanks!

PS78 is getting a reboot. The five raw captures are available on Usenet (a.b.starwars) if anyone needs/wants them.

I'm going to take three new captures using only the Panasonic AG-1980P and the Panasonic DMR-ES10. I think my capture cards are doing something silly with the AGC, so I don't want to use them.

I'm also looking into getting a copy of the 1983 VHS tape of The Octagon because it has colorbars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHIe1oz4Dtg

I plan to use Moth3r's guide to make the colors of the captures as close as possible to the source.

Ideas, Info & Help Wanted: a 16mm Telecine-Projector Project

After more research, I think we can get this to work using an Arduino and a Hall Effect sensor. This would work in a manner similar to the bike odometer, but it's better (read: easier) technology with which to work.
