4 - Beauty And The Beast (Letterbox - DS)

would came best (as "double feature") with

3 - Beauty And The Beast - Work In Progress (Letterbox - DS)

I know they are both on DVD and BD; what are the difference between them and the laserdisc version?

Primarily, the colors.

The BD release is closer, but not perfect from what I hear. Also, the DVD is atrocious and has extra scenes.

I believe there's different WIP versions available. I'm not sure if the one on the BD is the same as the one that was released on LD. And, to top it off, on the BD the work-in-progress version is downgraded from an alternate angle to a picture-in-picture feature! I think the DVD that comes with the big set still contains it as an alternate angle feature but that's still a huge disappointment.

Also, it's more than the colors. The LD is the only OAR release of B&TB, the rest are cropped to some degree.

Also why would #5 be letterboxed? Cinderella is in 4:3 is it not? That could also use a transfer if only for color reference. While Disney seems to have gotten better about this, that particular movie has a HUGELY anachronistic color pallet and it's painful to look at. Despite the fact that it's new to BR I think they used their DVD master done by Lowry years ago and it shows. Missing detail ahoy!

I look forward to any work you put out, regardless of if you choose to clean it up!

Holy shit! I can't believe they fucked up Cinderella that much.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

True enough, with the exception that "Possible reference?" suggests making it a Rosetta stone or disregarding all the other sources. We're all here searching and surmising because we haven't worked on Star Wars in the 1970's, either.

BTW, did you know (perhaps by your workflow?) if you applied a 30% saturation increase and a 30% strength 9300K temperature (with "remove color cast") to the laserdisc capture of that frame (from the 2006 DVD), it looks amazingly like your v2.0?

Can you post a sample? I'd love to see this.

I'm sorry but using a photo of a set as this literal a reference is completely misguided, because A) It's a photo apparently scanned from a magazine or a book, so it's most likely far from what the actual colors of the set looked like and B) even if it was a faithful representation of what the actual real world colors looked like, the film went through color-grading in post-production, so the real world colors are irrelevant.

Agreed. Interestingly, I posted it in support of your color choice(s).

I was referring to OmegaMattman's re-upload of Molly's theatrical version of Beauty and the Beast. It's a laserdisc rip and the only OAR version available. Plus, there's a few special edition add-ons that still managed to make it into the "theatrical" cut on each release. Minor changes, but still there.

To be fair though that's less strange than msycamore's video-only 97SE being removed.

What's weird is that I can't find the MySpleen log entry for the deletion of msycamore's 97SE.

I guess I'll need to ask them to know the exact reason behind the deletion. I did never ask them if an upload such as this one was allowed on their site. Thanks for going through the trouble to make it available AntcuFaalb!

Well, I've only uploaded one-half, so don't thank me yet!

I'll get around to uploading the second half ASAP.

I'm not too sure if I even have the motivation to restore the B&W ones.

At least with the pilots, restoration is the first step before colorization. I know colorization can often be disappointing, but in the heat of the DSII battle, it just may work.

OK, but I'll still focus on doing the color scenes first.

Yeah, things are moving a bit faster now and I'm happy for that too. DJ and the menu guy (the guy who helps us create some beautiful BD menus) still has some work to do on both, but after christmas I'll continue the work on ESB and hopefully things will keep moving a bit faster!

The mysterious "menu guy"...

He's the one calling all the shots, I know it!

I read somewhere that he's a senator.

I'm currently an expatriate living in Sweden.

That's awesome. You, msycamore, and You_Too should all meet up!

Which state did you move from?

Lol, I moved from Florida. That would be crazy to meet people who are advocates of the original trilogy from this site.  Especially here in Sweden. Most people look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them the films aren't the same anymore lol.  I don't know where they live but the chances of them being in the same area are probably not good.  Sweden is a pretty big country actually.

My wife grew up in Florida. I've been on holiday there a few times. Nice place.

Despite the distance, ya'll should meet up! OTcon 2013 in Sweden, baby!

48 fps!
Time

I don't associate HFR with soap operas. When I think of high frame rates, i think of video games, which is why the scenes with CG Azog reminded me of cut scenes from a PC game.

What I felt was that I was on the set with the actors. The costumes, make-up, and effect were mostly amazing, but in scenes with real people, the high frame rate broke the cinematic spell, exactly like walking onto the set.

I could see HFR 3D working really well with certain kinds of material, but this is not it, as far as I'm concerned. I don't want to be on the set, I want to be in Middle-Earth.

It's similar to a complaint I have with some Blu-Rays, like the Wizard of Oz. It's so crystal clear and sharp that Oz looks like a crummy set now. That's not what a Technicolor print on the silver screen looked like. I don't think a film like The Hobbit is supposed to feel like you're standing there. It's supposed to feel a little less real than that.

Last night, I saw Life of Pi in 3D, and it further convinced me that 24 fps is film. That film would've looked small and "too real" at 48 fps. I never really thought about it until now, but I think 24fps has a charm that's lost at higher frame rates. I'm aware that I'm just used to 24 fps, and HFR technology might have a charm all its own, but it's not the same as the charm of real film.

You probably don't realize how much we agree. :-)

Well, I never made an mkv of ESB and ROTJ, so you downlaoded something weird. How big are they?

The MKV's are from torrents. The only currently seeded torrents that I could readily find. They're approximately 6.75GB (SW/ROTJ) and 6.87GB (ESB) each.

I've run them through Handbrake, and it drops them to around 2GB, give or take, so it would seem that they are probably not compressed further from your AVCHDs.

What about MySpleen?

I could release the raw captures but I don't feel that they would add anything to the community.  These have all been captured on far superior equipment.  I'm actually trying to avoid any GOUT syncing lol. I'm really just concerned with making a presentable digital copy. If anybody is interested in them though I can think about it when I'm all done.

Ah, I understand.

I didn't realize that you weren't planning on distributing them.
