Moth3r: If you have the time, can you post a PNG of the Snell & Wilcox Zone Plate captured with your BT878 via s-video? (I can supply an m2v if you'd like...)

I'm interested in the resolution and chroma frequency response of the BT878.

Maybe one day, but my old BT878 card is boxed up somewhere in the garage; I have the SAA7231-based card installed at the moment.

OK, thanks. I'd greatly appreciate it!

Hope everything goes well with this project, looking forward to seeing your progress, haven't been able to login for a very long time, anyone else having the same issue?

No, I've been able to get in just fine.

Their progress is very explicit and visual now. You'll see what I mean whenever you're able to login again.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

OK, guys, last chance for any v2.1 suggestions you may have.

There may be higher quality sources for some of the models; e.g., that training-ball-thing Luke is practicing with on the Millennium Falcon.

The '85 CAV P&S LD has a total of ~480 scanlines of vertical resolution, which is much more than the GOUT.

Can you think of any models that would look better given a higher resolution source?

Which version of the credits are you using?

One suggestion is to reformat the John Williams credit to match the original early '77 run (a.k.a., the "tight" credit): http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Credits-Leaders-Thread/post/509893/#TopicPost509893

Also, can you include a cleaned-up copy of the USA ratings card? (See the same thread for more information and samples.)

These are the only changes I actually liked in any of the "special editions".

Nitpick: The 97SE only features some "Cleaned up special FX". It was half-assed; e.g., one shot will feature matte outline reduction and the following shot will have surprisingly-visible matte outlines.

Laserdisc capture workflow.

I'm sure it helps out in some situations but in this case it just adds layers of complication with no real benefit.

I agree. There are two options for doing capture averaging/median without artifacts or resolution loss:

1  Process the captures shot-by-shot (or even frame-by-frame)

2  Get an amazing image registration program to do the work for you

I think the best solution, for now, is to do one excellent capture and work on fixing drop-outs and speckles (that aren't on the source) manually.

What's the status of the Originals? (the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy)

So in that regard I guess many on these boards are impossible to please.

You're probably right.

I just want to see a proper restoration from the (damaged) IP used for the original theatrical run.

I know they still have it because they used that IP for the ANH Technidisc LD.

Wouldn't this give us the best possible quality while still retaining everything unique to a theatrical print, including (but not limited to) the infamous tantive orange errors?

At least these movies are still perfectly watchable in widescreen, though I'd prefer more picture any day.

They're watchable in widescreen because that's what open matte is all about.

The choice was made to shoot in 4:3, but construct each shot to fit within a 1.85:1 frame. This eliminates the need to pan&scan home releases, but still makes a widescreen theatrical release possible. It's genius.

I prefer to watch open matte movies in full frame because I prefer to watch movies on CRTs and most CRTs are 4:3.

In fact, I'm going to go watch Evil Dead II in full frame (open matte) right now!

In my book a lack of a car is a positive like the lack of broadcast television in your home.

I've never wanted a car.

I've sometimes wished I was able to learn to drive so I could hire one once in a while but ownership of a car is a millstone, a money vampire and an environmental pollutant.

Yes, but public transportation in the USA sucks.

My fifteen minute commute to work by car takes over two hours by public transportation (bus).

This is why I believe the true version of a film SHOULD be the 4th generation theatrical print, because that is the version everybody saw and THAT is the format that everything, from the cinematography to the special effects work, was intended for.

Plus, 4th generation negative although it may have the same resolution as a DVD or similar, looks nothing like a DVD blowup (looks much better, more contrasty, different grain structure).

It is a disservice to old movies to display them from the O-neg where you can see wires on the ships, matte boxes, etc.  It's not just because they were "old" that you see these things- if the o-neg was the final viewing format, those directors back in the day would have found the effects just as off-putting as we do!

I disagree. They should use the theatrical IP instead of a theatrical print. You still get what everyone saw, but at higher quality. It'll even have the original subtitles and tantive orange errors!

I posted a review of the Panasonic DMR-ES10's excellent comb filter here: http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?p=33347#p33347

Enjoy!

How comparable is this machine, hardware wise, to mine?

I don't know, actually. I can't find the service manual for yours.

Not even elektrotanya.com has it and they have everything!

I have my manual.  If you tell me what I'm looking for I'll gladly post the info ....  :)

You have the service manual with all of the circuit board diagrams, etc.?

Yes, the Digital Video Essentials DVD has a PAL version.

I can send you an m2v for just the S&W Zone Plate(s), if you'd like.

Thanks! It will be really useful to test a comb filter, either using it with a capture card or a DVD recorder!

No problem!

I'll have to send it to you in 7-8 hours; after I get off work.

I hear that many PAL comb filters are terrible, so I'm interested in seeing your results.
