And the black bars you recall during the throne room scene could have still been a P&S version.  Unless I'm mistaken (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am), some of the old P&S videocassettes switched to "widescreen" in the final moments of the film, just before the credits.  I once knew the technical reason for this, but I've forgotten it. Though I do remember something like that happening in many old VHS films, not just SW.

The HBO custom pan&scan does this, IIRC.

People didn't pass-up Prometheus because of this blunder: http://faildesk.net/2012/06/12/prometheus-runs-on-windows-7/

They passed-up Prometheus because it's a bad movie.

Didn't Prometheus make something like 400m?  Sounds to me like a lot of people didn't pass.

I mean, the movie was a disappointment to be sure, but it wasn't that bad.

When you're right, you're right.

"pass-up" was the wrong term to use. I should have said something like: "People formed negative opinions about".

Modern audiences expect their visual effects to be flawless.  Past audiences merely expected visual effects to be convincing.  We used to see reflections, boom mikes, obvious matte paintings, and even occasionally wires and that was perfectly acceptable to most people at the time.

It's still perfectly acceptable now.

Nearly everyone I know only cares about the story. The special effects, colortiming, and other minutia aren't important to them. These things are important to us, but I believe we're the minority.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that my 13-year-old sister wouldn't pass-up a movie because of bad press about visible matte outlines or something.

I personally would like to see a gambling scene where Oola is placing Jabba's bets for him, loses, and gets dropped into the pit

This is a great idea.

Despite my love for Lapti Nek, I admit that the lack of HD footage would make putting Lapti Nek into ROTJ:R not a good idea at all.

Just curious, does anyone know if there's been an attempt to colour correct the awful green tint on the Fellowship of the Ring Extended BD?  I've been looking for something like this for a while now.

From our own You_Too: http://fotrfix.blog.com/

Thanks!  But that's way to complicated for me. :)

If anyone has a link where I can get a CC version of this, please by all means PM me...with much gratitude.

Try this: http://web.archive.org/web/20111122145537/http://fotrfix.blog.com/

I don't think he ever encoded it. It's just a guide with information on how to fix it yourself.

Hoping someone from ot.com is on this.

I spoke with poita and he decided not to bid on it after being told by the seller that it's terribly blue-shifted and is a "blue mess" during the Ewok battle scenes.

How do you feel about Yub Nub?

I think that in a film full of soaring, fantastical and moving pieces of music, that tell as much of a story as the action on the screen does.....Yub Flub is a substantial failure. Again, instead of telling of a slightly tragic victory, where Luke met, and ultimately killed his own father....instead of strains of hopeful dreams for the new galaxy and the growing relationship between Han & Leia.......instead of new beginnings for a once shady, but now much celebrated hero, Lando Calrissian.....we get teddy bears singing a nonsensical little party song.

The song isn't the only thing to blame......I think the ending could have been more bittersweet, and more interesting than the group photo pose that we did get......but the music definitely doesn't help what is already a rather silly film.

This is why we view the films differently...

While I admit that Star Wars fits the literary archetype of the epic journey (a.k.a., the hero's journey), I fail to see its value as anything more than a three-part morality tale with great characters, creatures, and Jim Henson Muppet-monsters. What I'm trying to say is that I, personally, take more away from the Jabba the Hutt scenes at the beginning of ROTJ -- filled with the laughter of Salacious B. Crumb -- than I do from watching Darth Vader's internal struggle when deciding whether or not to save his son from the hands of the emperor.

Don't get me wrong: I certainly enjoy the more serious aspects of the films, but what I most look forward to is Lapti Nek in ROTJ, not the Battle of Hoth in TESB.

I understand how you view the films and see why Yub Nub doesn't meet your expectations. Considering my POV, do you see why it exceeds mine?

I wonder if it's possible to slim down the ewoks and give them a different fur texture to make them less teddy bear- like and more wild predator in appearance. Build on top of what's already there. That along with facial feature changes. Maybe morphing type tech. Then blinks and cantinization.

I've never had a problem with the way they've looked.....with their domed, unblinking eyes I actually found them rather creepy looking. It was their teddy bear like mannerisms that made us feel that they weren't to be taken seriously. The ewok musical themes that were designed for them (wicket's especially) didn't help either.

I agree and think there's value in the lightheartedness they bring to ROTJ. Yub Nub FTW.

IMO, one of the wonderful things about Star Wars is that the films never took themselves too seriously (whatever the hell that means -- films don't think!).

Don't mistake my meaning.....I think their LOOK works as is...without blinks or changes to their physical appearance.......but the Ewoks need some serious editing to make them work in the film. They make what should have been an epic climax into a pathetic joke.

Well, I'm going to have to disagree with you there, but it's a matter of opinion, so there's no point in defending my position, but I will ask one question: How do you feel about Yub Nub?
