The Rings of Power - The Film Cut [Released - Workprint stages finished]
Time

I tried with a different take on it to see how it would work, in where I had the prologue cut before Galadriel and her companions enter Morgoth/Sauron’s old leir, and then her waking up on the ship to Numènor. It kind of worked, up until I realized that most of her character development came from the first episode, and then it kinda goes into a stall.

Therefore, I reverted back to my linear structure.

The Harfoots don’t show up before the meteor crashes, the Southlands is introduced after Galadriel and Elrond’s conversation ends on “I want to hear more about your heroic tale” (or something of that ilk), and then intercutting the story threads up until a Act I climax when the Galadriel jumps into the ocean, the meteor crashes and the “Elf guy” is reunited with his old friends in the Orc Camp/Caves.

It’s 8-episodes-a-season, so 40 hours.

I found a satisfactory way to cut Game of Thrones seasons into films - and GoT does a far better job than this one thus far imo - so I’m fairly confident one movie per Rings of Power season shall be conclusive enough. There’s way too much filler in the first two episodes alone that I’d say they have 50-55 minutes worth of content combined.

However, I like shaping things along the way and who knows - perhaps we’ll realize that there are tons of things to completely remove (or keep) further down the line.

And perhaps you are right in that one season will need two or three films. But, at least my goal will be 1-film-a-season (if plausible). Three episodes in, and I only really like the Harfoot girl, Elrond, the Nùmenôr Captain and possibly Galadriel’s human raft bud. Galadriel is a must to keep obviously, but I think the main chess players are on the board now and a structure based on those characters along with a hard focus on the (very thin) plot I think will make for one very strong movie in the end. But for now, yes, that’s just a guess.

With the first three episodes now released, the first act of the series is pretty much set in stone and in all the disarray, confusion and online hate I see a lot of potential as well.

I’m definitely not on the bandwagon of trashtalking the show down and beyond - which is the norm these days for attention, togetherness and views and clicks, but I’m definitely agreeing on a lot of the constructive criticism of the show.

I’m not going to beat around the bush on this edit, so I’ll just go straight to it:

The Major beats of my changes:

-> Film/series color graded slightly (too remove a tad bit too much of children-fantasy-look at certain scenes) and a slight grain (nothing too noticeable) added.
-> Removal of dialogue too on the nose, way too Hollywood (keyword: predictable structuring of dialogue or “suspense lines”)
-> Characters will show up when important to the plot, and grow organically and steadily into the show - even with it’s very thin plot (up until Ep 3 at least). This way, it won’t feel as slow-paced and characters that are not yet of importance won’t waste your time on the screen.
-> Harfoots/Hobbits plotline is sharpened and structured. Ep 1-2’s storyline and introduction of (so far) many unimportant characters is extremely tiresome and will annoy most “attuned-to-cinema” viewers.
-> Galadriel has an intruiging backstory and actress imo, but her way too strong introduction and at times very tiresome dialogue (all mostly issues from the first 2 episodes, episode 3 way better here) is doomed to set a lot of audiences into shock and cringe mode. Therefore, Galadriel’s way too IM A STRONG FEMALE introduction is finely tuned into something more of a “IM A STRONG CHARACTER” introduction. This way, she can grow organically into the story and not come across as a character with too strong a skillset and personality for the viewer to understand that she - as all other good characters in a good story - will grow and learn as one.
-> CGI Wolf from Ep 3 is gone. I was surprised at how bad the CGI was here when everything else has been beautiful, and also the logistics of the “action” scene were disappointing and insulting.

… and then loads more.

LOTR being my favorite trilogy of all time, this is an edit more for me than anything I’ve ever edited before. I think there’s things to salvage here. And Ep 3 was a vast improvement in character development.

Good to hear the last few movie edits are coming along well.

Regarding SNOW - Is there a possibility you could go ahead with the darker ending for movie 10 (for us nihilist’s) and then once SNOW is released (a good year from now I’d say) produce an alternative cut of movie 10 so that show can follow on from it.

I think this would please on all fronts, however, I am fully aware of the work these edits take you. Just thought I’d mention my own preference early on and see what reaction you get from others about it.

Keep up the great work Anjohan.

I was thinking that, but then I realized; I’ve killed two major characters that definitely will show up in Snow, making it rather canon breaking and will probably render my film edits rather pointless for 90% that would want to use them for rewatch before Snow.

So, work will now continue on Film 7 and 8 (and workprints are already made for 7-10).

Film 7 is shaping along very nicely, and 7 and 8 - which I thought would be the two weaker installments - are turning out to be two of my favorite installments, feeling I’ve found the right balance between what’s good in the later story and removing or majorly altering what’s bad.

Also, with the news of a “Snow” show on the horizon, I MIGHT have to wait to release Film 10 until we have a first season of the show. It COULD completely alter the ending of the main show and therefore this series, if we somehow can salvage “lesser” parts.

I cut the vanilla rescue significantly in my sub-edit. Basically, ObiWan sets off the explosion, goes into back, opens 1 door, then the one where Leia is, and then leaves with her. There’s no opposition, because it’s all part of the trap.

Yes, that’s how I had it too before I did the new rescue. It really works the best. Everything in the original rescue is bad af, which is why I prefer the alternate one, but I understand people wanting the vanilla instead of the chocolate.

Yes, PM’s sent. Sorry for delay. I’m on holiday.

Btw, when I get back home, I’ll render a “Original Structure” Cut without the alternate escape. Some love it, some hate it - so damn it - I’ll have two available.

that makes me very happy to hear. i hope i didn’t come across as overly critical in my post. i think your edit is inspired. although there are other small changes i would personally make, without the alternate escape THIS is the edit i choose to add to my collection.

Absolutely not. Thank you for your honesty. Taste is taste - and making two versions doesn’t cost me many calories, as I simply just have to reinsert an old scene and then move the timeline to fit. The second cut will be even shorter tho, probably going from 2 hours and 14 minutes to 2 hours and 10 minutes or something.

That being said, I’ll remove some stupid things from the rescue in the Second Cut (Original Rescue), like Obi-Wan struggling so hard to fight some random goons, getting captured and all that vodoo.

I’m on holiday, so I’ve not got much time on my hands to respond to reviews either here or in PM’s, but I’m happy to hear a lot of you like the edit. 😃

For those that have mixed feelings or dislike major beats, then this edit simply isn’t for you - and that is fine.

I am very much satisfied and fulfilled with this version, and this is the Kenobi edit for me. If I do a V3 it will be small, minor tweaks that can improve either tone, pacing or inconsistencies. Nothing structure-wise.

Have a great summer, and may the force be with you! 😃 ❤️

Jedit:

Oh, and @tangelo1023, thank you for your review, but I fundamentally disagree with almost everything you point out (except that you were confused about the comm with Haja, I’ll clean that up some more next time)- and that is fine. This edit is just not your cup of tea, and I hope someone else’s is. Thank you for watching it and taking the time, and although we have different views on the editing philosophy and perhaps even tone for a Kenobi film, we sure do share the same passion.

Have a great day, friend, and thank you for your honesty. ❤️

Making the Obi-Wan & Anakin training session (From the Kenobi series) work in an AOTC edit.

Also, would definitely re-score the Flashback with AOTC music - preferably the Padme’s Apartment soundtracks, but mixed to fit with Anakin’s emotions (like his Mother Theme).

#Jedit:

One could even incorporate a sort of opening montage, with the focus on Jedi Training, were one could incorporate the Reeva Order 66 opening and cut it before the Clones enter -> Do some exterior shots mixed with the Anakin&Obi-Wan training spliced up (turn some of them into night time to accompany Reeva Order 66 scene) -> and make the AOTC opening be like a “A Day in a Jedi’s life” type of opening. This is just ramblings, but it could work with the right amount of footage, music and tone set.

I personally think the definitive best way to pace it would be:

-> Original opening with Padme assassination attempt
-> Deleted Scene of Padme at the Senate Hearing (it’s a good scene on its own, and it will help calm down the intense opening for a smoother transition
-> New establishing shot (fanmade -> Coruscant Exterior, a Jedi-worthy, subtle soundtrack
-> AOTC Flashback incorporation (color graded, Anakin’s voice pitched down, deepfake incorporated)
-> Chancellor Palpatine’s Office, Padme and Mace Windu talks -> suggestion of Obi-Wan and Anakin to assist
-> Anakin & Obi-Wan in elevator

This introduces all main and side characters (except Dooku) in the opening ten minutes, would provide smooth transitions between the hard opening, but most importantly; a time span of what could be a full day before we see Anakin & Obi-Wan again after their Flashback scene, so for the audience to disregard the subtle changes in actor’s age and differences between the two very different shooting schedules.

My two cents.

Anjohan, I noticed that during the new rescue, the color of Leia’s coat changes in a few shots to the former green, instead of staying brown. I think that you probably noticed it but let this pass by, since it’s just a few glimpses, but I’m just saying in case you haven’t seen this detail.

(By the way, thank you for uploading V2 😉)

Yes and no. The shots you refer to are far from pov and Leia is standing near the green-tinted windows with the reflection from the water outside, so I let it pass as reflection. Hehe!

Update

V2 is good and fine, but it was reported there’s a slight brightness-like render bug in the conversation with Haja and Obi-Wan. I’ll do a re-render tonight and upload and replace, so that whenever you want to watch the edit again you can have the bugfree version.

Thank you for all your positive feedback, and I’m soon done with the Credits.txt file (im at page 15 of this thread). Hopefully upload soon.
