Another video...this time testing out a totally different ending for ROTJ.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUJL7c3-yro

I started this before Adywan had ever mentioned ROTJ:R...actually I got alot of the ideas from the Starkiller Ranch thread...back when it was still alive...*sniff*  ;)
I started this video about two years ago and continued to add and change things as i went along.
Some ideas I first started off with don't seem near as fesible now (new 3PO dialouge)...plus some ideas seem a bit...fan boy-ish.
But there are some ideas I do like...that being the main reason I decided to finally post it now. I want it to be floating around for a while so people can watch and comment on what they like and don't like...maybe this will help Adywan with some ideas...we'll have to wait and see!

Oh! And I'd better comment now that I *don't* want Hayden in this version...I simply don't have a good copy of the GOUT to use. :D

I love the SE ending to ROTJ, including the music (but I don't mind that Adywan is changing it). But this is an amazing mockup!

Lando's escape is even more dramatic, I actually wondered whether he was going to make it, great use of the "That was too close!" And I liked having the additional shot of Akbar relieved that the battle is won.

I would have preferred if the sending off was done by Mon Mothma, or Leia, Akbar there feels a little wierd.

Having the fleet breakup is a great idea, their missions is done, but I also think it went on too long.

I think the celebrations should have been used at the end, maybe inserting the Falcon flying overheard into the Coruscant celebration: now the people of the galaxy have heard the good news. It would be nice if we could get a shot of Leia in the Senate, but that might be a bit much.

The thing that bugs me the most is having Han's line be right before the credits. In the end of a Star Wars film the last minute or two is just music, no dialog, before we iris in to the credits.

Another idea building on this: the last shots are of the Coruscant celebration, but seen by Luke and Leia from a balcony on Coruscant, then the Jedi ghosts (rather than earlier on Endor), Leia smiles, Luke joins her, we see the ghosts one final time and iris in.

One small thing, maybe for the wishlist, I always thought Niem Numb was hobbit sized, but anyway seeing him be human-sized really ruins the illusion that he's an alien. Would it be possible to resize him in the Endor celebration?

While some of these production paintings are cool, some remind me how lucky we are that George Lucas wasn't able to to do everything he wanted back in the days of the OT.

That painting from McQuarrie wasn't done for the ROTJ film. It was done later for the Illustrated SW Universe book from the early '90's.

No, it was done for the first Ewok movie in the mid 80s: Little Cindel's parents get kidnapped by this giant called the Gorax, but get rescued by Wicket's people. This idea for a  shot was never used, but I wish it had! Man, I gotta rent the DVD of the Ewok movies to get inspiration for Ewok fighting!

Yeah, I never had much of a problem with the design of the rancor as much of the model, well, puppet that they used. Its plenty scary if the lighting is right, as Angel's mockups showed!

And of course more ILM lying about the mattelines: they said they'd removed them in the SEs but they weren't removed until the 2004 DVD. One less thing that need fixing by Adywan I suppose.

Replaced the poor background and reveal some set detail in the shadows.

EDIT: Who loves Violence?

-Angel

I have very little tolerence for violence (and sand for that matter), ROTS's was uneccessary. But I love your mockups, yay for better detail than a real place!

Anyway, regarding the Sarlacc, I admit I was disappointed in the OUT for referring to a "pit" and then showing us exactly that. The SE was in improvement but not much of one, as they didn't\couldn't do much to the original shots. I'm trying to think of what kind of creature might live in that sort of pit with the teeth and all.

Hmm, maybe the teeth-like structure are attached to rings of flesh that move when something's inside of them?

Cap, this was one of the best explanations of ROTJ failures, thank you for that. "This is not Han Solo" was Kershner's sentence as well, after Ford said "I love you too" in the Bespin carbon chamber. So it was changed to "I know".

Obviously Marquand was not that kind of director. I've seen "The eye of the Needle" and it had too much overblown drama in details so every idiot could understand it as well.

Reading your post I just tried to think, well how can anybody fix this big issues? They are not cosmetics any more. And Ady said that "Jedi is going to be a mess". It really is, but I hope...still...

I saw Jedi first when I was 14. Then I was annoyed with Ewoks. Later I noticed that actors are talking to each other like they are in the middle of a big american city having ordinary day there, exept they wear strange wardrobe.

Why did this happen on Jedi and didn't on Empire? Was Marquand taking it all too lightly?

Why is the movie looking like "OK, everybody! I know the last one was seriously dramatic but now let's have some great fun! Hahaha! War can be really fun! Everybody shoots, but nobody dies because it's ... the fun show and y'know, it's only a movie! Hahaha"

And I would really like to read any kind of statement of Ady regarding this problems, if a great man is not too busy...

Greets to everyone here

As I've said before, ROTJ is my favorite movie, I never really liked ESB that much, its much too serious for a Star Wars movie. :P

Actually I'd say that shows the softer side of Han, and how much he's changed. The novel went to great length on this: he's not the go-it-alone type of guy anymore, after Luke and co. went to rescue him from Jabba he finally changed and did something for the greater good, becoming a formal member of the Rebellion, and since he already done so much for them they gave him a high rank although I suspect Leia has something to do with that.

A big part of why I love ROTJ so much is the maturing of the major characters: Luke is a Jedi (obviously), and is even willing to take a chance on his dad and offer him safety from the Empire despite what Obi-wan and Yoda think!

Han probably has the greatest growth in maturity, he is willing to risk his life for the Rebellion in the crazy sabotage on the shield generator, which culminates in his giving his beloved ship to Lando to use, even though he's not too sure about Lando coming back. That's no small thing for Han, and although it contains false foreshadowing that scene aboard the shuttle before they take off  shows that pretty clearly. He may love Leia but he really loves his ship.

And Lando is so impressed by Han, Leia and Luke's dedication to each other and the cause that he does the selfless thing and joins the Rebellion too. Of course that may end in his sacrifice in the Death Star in this or any other edit, but can we at least save the Falcon for Han? :p

Vader/Anakin of course is ultimately willing to do something unselfish, and dies for it.

The casualness of the dialog is to me like the so-called corniness of the dialog in the P: these guys are in some respect so used to doing what they do that this is just an ordinary thing for them. They watch out for each other and the mission, but everything else during the battle is no big deal. Like my friend put it in my sig :)

Ewoks: You got me there. :) I saw the Ewok movies first, when I was 7. I cheered when I first saw Wicket and friends in ROTJ. I saw ROTJ when I was 11,  and BTW its the only OT film I've ever seen in theaters (the SE in May 1997 after seeing the OUT in March). Since I was already familiar with the way the Ewoks did things, it was so much fun seeing them take on stormtroopers and help the Rebellion too. If Ady could incorporate elements from the Ewok movies to create new shots I'd love it.

Here's a try at expanding McQuarrie's unused matte of Endor into something useable. Not finished yet, but you get the idea. I'll be replacing the mountains with something more realistic and maybe the trees, but the design is pretty fixed. This is scaled down to about 20% of the actual image resolution and, for some reason, greens always scale down into oversaturated lime!

I like my gas giants without rings :p

If that's at 20% of the original, I'd love to see the original! That is beautiful work.

You know, I never thought about it until the recent mock-ups - are those "bridges" supposed to be bridges or supports for the inner elevator tube inside the tower shaft?  I guess that's the problem with the shaft around the elevator being unmolested by any sort of gantryway looking things in that without anything connecting the inner tube with the outer tower structure, it wouldn't be very stable.

I always thought they were bridges, like the bridge in ANH that Obi-wan crosses in the Death Star to reach the power switch for the tractor beam

I just read the pages in the novel with Boba Fett's death, and he does a little more than in the final movie. He strikes me as more active. Unfortunatly we don't have a line recorded for this but as he's trying to shoot Luke on the skiff he curses at Han "Get out my way you bind fool!" He comes across in those pages as willing to defend Jabba, but really just out for himself.

So that brings up another possibility: Han knocks his rocket pack as in the the original, but he lands on the deck, leaving us to assume he gets blown up with the sail barge. If we had one more shot of him, (anybody know anyone with a movie-accurate Boba Fett suit?) he could get up and discover his rockets don't work.

I was interested to find Ady had given the idea of two Death Stars in the battle some thought, the second being the bare bones one from ROTS.

I love that idea, it really does give viewers of a special edition a WTF moment with Luke finding himself somewhere he (and the viewer) didn't expect to be.

And being so incomplete it would be much more plausible to imagine it being destroyed by a huge capital ship like the Executor destroying it by ramming into the thing.

The problem of the two Death Stars concept is that it would mean changing just about every line about "the Death Star" to something else, and we don't have enough Akbar or Mon Mothma dialog for it.

I think a frame-structure would be harder to be destroyed by the Executor, the frame would probably just fall apart rather than explode if it gets hit.

And having it go through a bunch of empty space to reach the core would look weird ;)

Here's a few effects shots that have bothered me:

-The Executer bridge tower as Han and Company wait for the code to clear looks too modely

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/bGlIfESK9bY_mP2MXkGH-g?feat=directlink The Death Star could use some work here

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ssziDf6AAP-G6Y0k2LJxAA?feat=directlink

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/q5S9WlqNihZparb5DynE7A?feat=directlink The Death Star looks almost red in some points

-This scoutrooper who's calling for help after knocking over Han is losing his mask, you can even see his face

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/cckaUXkNEjbDGnudOsul1g?feat=directlink

-There's a shimmering effect around the speederbikes as Han watches Luke and Leia take chase (couldn't get it in a screenshot). Might be a brightness issue.

-In the 2004 DVD the laserbolts from the speederbikes are now a very pretty yellow ;)

-The speederbike chase needs some mattelines removed in some shots

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/SnYuhakgZAyGeJoPnT327A?feat=directlink

-During the chase a laserbolt hits a tree but nothing happens.

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Ci4XHJ0yAyfiXPQebOYs4w?feat=directlink

-An explosion from a speederbike that got hit can be seen through the tree that blocks it from the camera momentarily

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/v_qEumw4-X4tfPFlhTNFCQ?feat=directlink

And it even separates from the speederbike after the tree passes! http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/weP4lIQgez5w8E9uNcGz-A?feat=directlink
