Aliens - Haven't seen, never going to.

Why not?

When Alien came out in the theaters, it was instantly one of my top ten films.  I saw it weekly, much the same way I had with Star Wars a couple of years earlier.  I bought the VHS (and later the laserdisc) as soon as it was available, wore out the soundtrack, etc.   To me, it was a complete story and I had zero interest in what came after in the story or seeing the story go from cerebral-based to action-based.

Addendum to my initial post;

Blade Runner was also the same way for me - instant favorite, weekly viewings in the theater, etc.  For many years, the theatrical version was all I knew.  I had a laserdisc of it as soon as it was available and also made one of my first full-film audio rips from it.  When the Director's Cut was announced, I wasn't terribly interested in a new version of the story. It's just not something that interests me in general, with any film.

After I read what the changes were, I decided to give it a look.  The narration wasn't something I ever felt was needed, so dropping it was fine with me.  The daytime happy ending had, to me, always been harshly out of place in the context of the the film.  If I want to watch The Shining, I'll watch The Shining.  ;-)

The Director's Cut is the definitive version for me now.  All those other versions from the mega-set don't interest me.  I've been an uber- fan of the film since its release, but I can't keep changing versions or relearning scenes and visuals which have been in my head for 29 years.

Apocalypse Now - Theatrical.  The only version I've ever seen.  One of my Top Ten films.

Alien - Theatrical.  The only version I've ever seen.  One of my Top Ten films.

Aliens - Haven't seen, never going to.

Blade Runner - Director's Cut.  Removal of narration and sunny ending were vast improvements.  One of my Top Ten films.

Terminator 2 - Saw it once in the theater and remember almost none of it.  I didn't dislike it, but I'm not a fan.

If there is no validity then where is the public challenge of Lucas stance.

This very site is a public challenge.  Kaminski's Save Star Wars site and his Secret History book are public challenges.  Various exposes and articles by writers on respected web sites are also public challenges.

What exactly do you think the public could do differently to force Lucas to do what we want, but which he doesn't?  He owns the film.  Just because we don't like the lies, that  doesn't mean we have the ability to make him tell the truth or to do what we want.

Truthfully, I'm floored that we ever got the 06 DVD of the original -  even as poorly transferred as it was, and while being tossed onto a toy advertisement bonus disc.

I know of no other case where a director has tried to systematically erase a set of films from existence or tried to rewrite history.

Nor do I

Lucas is such a giant in the industry nobody will challenge him not even his peers.

I don't think they care.  At least not enough to bother with him.  His breath-holding, foot-stomping, child-like behavior - his disturbing level of control issues and ego -  are legendary.  The more anyone pushes, the more he digs in and does just the opposite.  It would be a complete waste of time.

a relatively modern film from 1977 is lost by the director himself, its ludicrous.

Yes it is.

only I am allowed to use the Warb sigh!

Oooh no you don't, Warb.  You're not coming in here with all that My Original Sigh crap - "I always meant for it to have four asterisks instead of two, I couldn't italicize back in 07", etc, etc.

The sigh belongs to the board now.  Stop with all your revisionist sigh mess.

The piracy wouldn't stop entirely, some people will always want a free ride but arguable legitimacy to piracy would be halted, coupled with the cache of owning a legitimate copy (which is still important to many people) it would knock a lot of illegal and profit draining activity on the head.

True.  I work with a couple of people who pirate films just because they can. One of them burned me a copy of The Dark Knight before it was released on DVD.  One of those branded copies from the studios.  I never watched it. Weird, that girl set up a Netflix account specifically for renting\copying. Not sure where she got The Dark Knight she was handing out.

After I bought Indiana Jones - Kingdom... on Blu-ray, I realized I had no way to rip the audio the way I normally do*.  In passing, I mentioned it to her.  She offered to get me a DVD copy, said she'd bring it in the next day.  I passed and just bought a used one off Amazon to rip from.  In fact, *rubs goatee pensively* I shall listen to it now, while I surf the internet work.

*I assume my audio rips are a form of illegal copying so I'm not clean either, but I do buy legal copies to rip from.  In fact, I need to get 2001 on DVD.  I only have it on Blu-ray.

If the officially franchised version of anything is made to the desired quality and affordable piracy becomes unnecessary.

If a desired object is badly made or too expensive people will compromise with a cheaper or free lower standard copy or a non-franchised better quality item.

Which is exactly what we have going on here with regard to Star Wars77.

George digging his heels in, keeping the quality low = piracy.

The moment he releases the 1977 version properly, the piracy stops. People will pay for quality.

Spring Training trip report

Yeah, people seem to be either hot or cold on them.  I'll surely miss them, but I suppose I'll give Orel and Valentine a look.  Don't know much about Schulman.

If I don't dig the chemistry, I'll just switch to Rangers baseball, which is shown here locally on Sunday nights.  The Rangers are the only team allowed to play on Sunday night (other than the two on ESPN game) because of the oppressive heat in Arlington.

Spring Training trip report
Time

Even though I'm a dug-in, life-long Astros fan, we chose Cactus League and the Giants because we're big Giants fans.  We attend several games every year when my wife has to go to San Francisco on business.  In fact, she schedules the trips around Giants home stands. Astros Spring Training would be great fun too, but I see those guys at least 100 times a year already.

We went to three games; Dodgers, Royals, & Athletics.  This late in Spring Training a lot of roster cuts have already been made, so you’re seeing more of the regular players and top AAA guys.  I assumed it would be more pure baseball than the regular season, and I wasn’t disappointed.

They announce the line-ups, sing the national anthem, and it’s baseball for nine innings –  no smile cam, no kiss cam, no follow-the-baseball shell game, no Hummer races, no text your favorite song, no lucky fan seat upgrade, no guess the attendance, no t-shirt slingshot, and no mascot races – just baseball.  No visual noise, no distractions. The event is the game.  The fans are much more hardcore than many that attend regular season games.  They get there before the game and leave after the last out.  They make that long pilgrimage from other states for the game, not to mill around in the concourse and socialize.

We had the season ticket holder package which included a dinner Saturday night with four of the players. It was a nice evening & good food.  The four players were Cody Ross, Panda, Pat Burrel, & Andres Torres.  They answered questions and talked to fans for about two hours.  All four were very nice and personable. They signed the line-up sheet I took off the bulletin board in the clubhouse of the practice fields.

After the last game (Athletics) we waited and met Jeremy Affeldt.  Also very nice.  He must have talked to fans and signed autographs for an hour at least.  The biggest treat for me, however, was getting to meet and talk to Jon Miller.  He calls the games for the Giants as well as having been (until this coming season) the voice of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball for the past 21 years.

Anyone who have ever tried to call me between the hours of 7 – 10 PM on Sunday nights knows that Sunday Night Baseball is the only TV program I never miss.  Jon Miller was super nice and very appreciative of our years of devotion, as well as our disappointment that ESPN has reworked the show. I have his autobiography and was going to ask him to sign it – but I forgot to put it in my suitcase. Good thing I left it on my desk for the past two weeks, next to my keys, so that I would remember to pack it get accustomed to seeing it and then to leave it behind.  ;-)

That’s it for the baseball part.  On a side note, the cities of Phoenix\Scottsdale were very pleasant.  The people everywhere were Stepford friendly and the entire area may be the cleanest place in America. Certainly the cleanest city I’ve ever seen.  That said, the constant Sun and 5% humidity would be very tough to take.

Our only side trip was to visit Taliesin West.  We’re big Frank Lloyd Wright nerds, so seeing his personal residence was a big treat.
