Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

When I asked if we'd been introduced, I was addressing the fact that you obviously didn't realize I'm a different type of Star Wars fan. I own and watch (every decade or so) only one of the films.   My area of interest is EU.

In answer to your earlier question; I never bothered with the last two films. Not even remotely interested.

I am very worried that it will be like Star Trek 09 or Into Darkness, simply because Disney prefers the most marketable Star Wars characters and situations over something new.

No doubt about it, Disney is a behemoth. That said; I can't assume they will go profit first, story second. This is a franchise people are obviously passionate about, so they may err on the side of caution. They can have their cake and eat it too, which is what I'm hoping for.

I just watched Star Trek 09 the other day, and realized near the end that the analytical part of my brain had atrophied from disuse while watching that highly polished entertainment product. It's fun and entertaining, but there's no substance or bold reinterpretation of the material. This is what worries me the most about the Star Wars sequels.

I'd argue that the altered timeline is a bold reinterpretation.  One which divided the fan base. One which got this particular Trek nerd re-engaged with a franchise I'd drifted from.   To me, Abrams gave it substance again.

No more "There be whales here..." or Data singing show tunes. A serious space adventure with characters I was glad to see again.  Abrams reunited me with Star Trek, and I really loved Super 8.  I'm cautiously optimistic, but it's entirely possible my Star Wars DVD collection doubles in size after VII is released.

The best is to hear the fans now moaning that they will only recognize Episodes 7,8,9 as 'additions' to the SW universe, because the Darth Vader arc is so important to them.  What's ironic is for years they yelled at the OOT fans like myself who wouldn't recognize the PT or Special Editions, and would say, "The Saga is 6 episodes now so deal with it!"

So now I answer them back, "The Saga is now 9 Episodes, so deal with it!"  And they start going crazy telling me to mind my own business and they have a right to recognize what movies they want.

Irony!  Gotta love it!

It would take forever to find it, but years ago we discussed this very situation;  The PT fans someday being forced to accept change they don't want.  The handful of PT fans who joined in (it seemed like it crossed boards) swore they would never have to.

They were operating from a position of power.  The PT was current & topical, and the OT had just released in poor quality.  They felt justified in their smug attitudes.  Beyond justified, they had no reason what so ever to even entertain the idea that they may have been wrong. How can you be wrong if you've won?

Star Wars equals huge cash.  On its worst day, it's still a profit maker. There was no way anyone was going to stop at the PT.  Lucas had been saying goodbye to Star Wars for 20 years.  Original fans had literally lived through decades of Lucas' pathological lying.  He could sit with a straight face and blatantly lie about things where we had proof of just the opposite. original Vision, characters, story, number of films, etc, etc.  He's lied about all of it a hundred times over.

Still, the PT fans still stood their ground: Lucas would never lie to them, nor would he ever do them wrong. He was good and pure, they were the winners.

The PT fans had the benefit of being in the moment.  We had the benefit of experience.  All we had to do was wait.

Ben Affleck cast as new Batman

I was never sold on (1) Man of Steel, (2) Zach Snyder, (3) another Batman reboot, or (4) a versus movie, so adding Affleck doesn't mean anything to me.

Same here.  This isn't even a blip on my radar.  Funny how much attention it's getting.  It's a comic book film.  They're throw-away.  Watch the ones you dig, ignore the ones you don't.  No single film can ruin a character or franchise.  Unless you let it.

It was a physical prop and the light was really hitting it from the same direction as the building ergo it felt real to me.

The newer version is a pretty picture but it doesn't feel realistic.

I'm with Bingo on all of this - interior Death Star77, Ben's house77, hangers77, etc.  After 1977 they just seemed to take the ball and run with it.  The very thing that made the 1977 film magical - imagination - seemed to be whittled away as time went on.  The prequels are an abomination compared to Taylor's work.  Can't even be compared.  Aaagain, George - know when to to say when.

Sixth or third, I would guess. Those are the times the Doctor has regenerated to an older looking version.

If I were a betting man, I'd say that the 12th would be of the same ilk as the 6th, who was the same ilk of the 1st.

That's my though as well.  Which, by the way, I'm not really looking forward to.  That's one of the things that kept me from really connecting to it as a kid. Having a Doctor who is older than me doesn't really interest me. 30s and 40s is fine and has worked really well the past three Doctors.  I hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

I also don't see how Clara is going to fit in.  Don't know why and it's based on nothing at all at this point (obviously).  Again, hope I'm pleasantly surprised. She's become one of my favorite companions.  Love her depth and independence.

That was a one off ship taken in a hostile boarding action.

e.g. There's a difference between sneaking onto Endor aboard the captured shuttle Tydirium in a covert operation and the New Republic flying around everywhere in evil looking Imperial shuttles.

It may have been a one-of, but it still worked.  A former war ship being used for good.

I'm with Silverwook on this one.  It should be done because within the Star Wars universe (or any sci-fi universe), it would be done.  You wouldn't let that much technology and ability go to waste after a war.

You might even sell one into the private sector.  If they can maintain it, crew it, and use it - why not?....

open the movie with a Star destroyer coming from behind the camera like SW 77', only to see that it is completly destroyed, cut in half and that it is an old ruin from an old battle. Plenty of wrecks everywhere. And zoom in to a little ship in the middle of them.

Interior ship:

New republic officer: What are we looking for Sir? There's nothing here for decades.

Luke Skywalker: I don't know... I felt something.

I like it.  A nice connection to 1977, then quickly showing that a great deal of time has passed.  A nod to the Katana fleet.

No, I'm not kidding.  She has the chops to play aloof\weird\absent-minded, dark, etc.

The Doctor has mentioned before that he's not sure what he'll regenerate into. If it were handled with a nice balance of serious and light, it could really be interesting.  They could go light on companions for a while too.  Focus on the more solitary Doctor.

I'd dig a more edgy Doctor again, along the lines of Eccleston or the last several episodes of Tennant, particularly The Waters Of Mars.

Exploring is exactly like TMP, long meanders leading to the occasional astonishing vista, not a perpetual race through Dutch angled daisy cutter explosions, like the JJ films ...

I agree.  While I like the first JJ film a lot and find the second one ok, they're bordering on getting away from exploring outer space.  I get that with the first one, but the second was a bit much.  Now that they're set up for the five-year mission, I'm hoping they get back to getting way out there and exploring the dark unknown.

There is as much story in the TMP as TWOK it's just not as quotable and amusing or camp.

I agree here even more.  I know it's sacrilege, but I don't care for The Wrath Of Khan.  Montalban is constantly chewing the scenery.  To me, it's almost laughable at times.  Maybe I need to give it another look.  It's probably been twenty years since I watched it.

I'm currently enduring the infamous four minute long Kirk and Scotty looking at the Enterprise scene, but still.  I could write this post seven more times, and it still wouldn't be over.  It's still going on!

I chalk it up to being a product of it's time: Trek being back in the world again - and bigger than ever.  Plus, they were finally able to show the Enterprise in all it's detailed glory.  At that point, it had all existed only on 26" Zeniths. But yeah, they got carried away with that beauty shot.

Tried to give Silver Linings Playbook a watch a few days ago and had to bail after about 30 minutes.  I hate shaky-cam documentary-style camera work.  If you want me to watch your story, don't make me work to follow it around the screen.  It's annoying to me and lazy on the part of the director.

Man of Steel - Your thoughts
Time

For the record;  I've never been a big fan of Superman.  He just isn't my style of crime fighter.  I've seen the 1978 film, the 2006 film, and I've read a handful of the comics over the years.  The two films I have seen were fine.  Not being emotionally invested in the character, I didn't have strong feelings one way or another.

That said, I was somewhat looking forward to this new take.  I was skeptical about the new look and darker direction, but again, no strong feelings either way.

I never got around to seeing this new one in the theaters and judging by this thread and conversations with co-workers, I haven't missed much.  Dark works for Batman (my hero) because he's dark.  Dark seems risky for Superman because he isn't.

I'll give it a look when it's on cable.

Taking a moment to gloat
Time

I've been crazy busy with a house sell\buy\move the past few months, so I've only been lurking in case things got ugly.  That's all winding down and I'm settling into the new digs.  I'll be back up to speed soon.

That said; I thought I'd take a moment to mention a nerd co-worker of mine.  I took this pic a few days ago (casual Friday).  This is a woman whom I work very closely with every day.  We office next to each other also.

I don't have to tell you what a distraction that can be.  Her physical beauty is matched only by her intelligence. She's a multi-degreed professional, who will probably be running our division one day.

We discuss all things sci-fi nerdy, but even this outfit caught me off-guard.  There were maybe three people on our entire floor who even caught it.  She was hiding in plain sight.

It's not just a fun shirt for her either.  This woman really knows her science fiction.  Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who - you name it, she knows it well.  In fact, she's been my mentor into the world of Doctor Who.  Look out Bingo, won't be long and I'll be able to jump into your discussions about the show.  I started with the 9th Doctor, by the way.

Anyway, thought you folks would appreciate her brazen nerdiness in a corporate environment.  Oh, and for the record;  away from work she's also a close personal friend, so keep it clean(ish).  ;-)

So much so that it did incalculable damage to the public perception of Batman and comics in general.

However it was perceived by adults at the time, it certainly didn't damage Batman for me. Very much the opposite.  I was 5 years old at the time and never missed an episode.  At the same Bat Time every week, on the same Bat Channel, I was sitting in front of the TV with my cape on (towel held on with a big safety pin) waiting to see my masked hero fight crime.

The camp and double entendre were lost on me, but the idea of a crime fighter with a secret identity struck a cord.  That show made me the Batman nerd I still am to this day.  I can watch the original TV show these days and take it for what it is (was); a product of its time. For me personally (now), Nolan gave me the Batman I wanted.  Burton did too on his first film only.  The Schumacher stuff is shit.

Star Trek is the same way. I loved the original series, I can stomach the first film series, I like the first two Next Generation films, and I'm very happy with Abrams' work so far.

If anything;  Nolan and Abrams brought me back to franchises that I'd abandoned many years earlier, out of dislike for the directions they'd taken.  Zahn did the same for me with Star Wars, as did Barbara Broccoli with the James Bond franchise.

All four franchises had become sealed capsules of what I wanted from them.  Distilled down to select entries, never to be expanded on. I was happy with what I had as a fan, but I was finished with them expanding.  Or so I thought.  New isn't always bad and in my case it's been a wonderful surprise.
