Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Sorry, should've specified I meant that the 2004 enhancements were done at 1080p. I didn't have a figure on the 1997 enhancements, but I'll take your word that they were 2k, Harmy.

At any rate, kenkraly, your optimistic "let's wait and see what happens" attitude is pretty fruitless as regards hope for a new 4k or 8k scan. The maximum possible resolution that can be squeezed out of these films is as follows:

Ep 1: 2k

Ep 2-3: 1080p

Ep 4-6: 1080p (if they use the 2004 version) or 2k (if they use the 1997 version, which seems unlikely)

As ChainsawAsh pointed out, the only Star Wars films that are capable of being scanned in at 4k or 8k are the OUT, which George has made abundantly clear he has no intention of restoring and preserving.

You're right that a 4k or 8k scan would be an ideal basis for future releases. However, Ep. 2-3 for originally shot in 1080p, so even a 2k scan is out of the question, let alone 4k or 8k. Moreover, while a 4k or 8k scan of Ep. 4-6 would theoretically be possible, the SE enhancements were scanned in at 1080p, so again 4k or 8k scans are precluded since the quality difference between the original footage and the new enhancements would be jarringly noticeable.

One wonders, when faced with this data, why George seems so hell-bent on sabotaging his own movies...even the ones he apparently likes.

I think another reason many are less than enthusiastic about this release is that we've been double-dipped by LFL in the past. ("That's like putting your whole mouth right in the dip. From now on, when you take a chip, just take one dip and end it.")

When I say I absolutely will not buy any Star Wars set that doesn't include the OUT, it's not just vitriol; I'm really genuinely not interested in the least to see George's "improved" versions, regardless of resolution, audio compression, or format. Even if the color timing was corrected and the audio mix was, as kenkraly2007 is fond of prognosticating, "fixed," I still couldn't care less. These aren't the movies I'm looking for.

That feeling is just intensified when I remember paying full price for the trilogy on DVD in 2004 only to shell out again two years later when the GOUT was released. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. I'll gladly wait until until a decent transfer of the OUT is completed before buying another Star Wars product. If that time never comes...oh well, it's not like I'm interested in any of the other cheaply-made, soulless, mass-produced Star Wars garbage coming out these days.

I was going off the following quote from Lucas, with respect to the upcoming Blu Ray release:

“Releasing the originals is kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good. You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally. It’s a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version.”

My assumption is that, since work on the new set has already commenced, and George claims not to have made a digital transfer of the original, the above-mentioned quote therefore basically amounts to an admission that the OUT will not be on the upcoming release. That's how other news sites seem to be taking it, too.

Slashfilm.com said:

Lucas said that the original trilogy films included on the Blu-Ray release will be the remastered special editions.

Movieonline.com said:

Only the 1997 special editions of the original trilogy — the one’s that added such unnecessary things as Greedo shooting first — will get the Blu-ray transfer.

Et cetera and so forth.

Yeah this thread should be all negative, I hate this and I hate that. I want this person beaten and that one dead because my opinon is fact and rules over all. Nevermind many of us would never reach anywhere close to the levels of Burtt or Wood.

This is so fallacious. You're right, if I had been put in charge of the 2004 sound mixes, I probably would've screwed them up even worse than Wood and Burtt did. Do you know why? Because I'm not a professional sound tech.

The fact that you and I aren't technically capable of producing a high quality professional sound mix doesn't excuse shoddy work on the part of professionals who are paid to do precisely that. Nor does it mean that I as a nonprofessional shouldn't be allowed to criticize poor craftsmanship or sub-par work just because "you couldn't do any better." I'm no sculptor by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm still well within my rights to complain about that hideous statue in front of the local DMV.

The Empire Strikes Back "1980 Theatrical version" Reconstruction - Adywan (Released)

Oops, nevermind. A quick check around teh intraweb reveals that this is a common problem today with Jdownlader and Rapidshare. Apparently this is solved by either a.) updating Jdownloader, or b.) restarting the program twice.

Option B worked for me. Hope this is helpful to anyone else who is thusly encumbered.

Blast! Parts 1-32 downloaded just fine, but the remaining ten files are being troublesome. The "Status" section reads as follows:

Ihr Cookie nicht erkannt. Bitte sich unten ein oder kaufen Sie einen Premium-Account. Sofortige Freischaltung!

I tried reloading the list in JDownloader, to no avail. Very frustrating. Anyone encounter this?

Shaw looks nothing like Anakin (who's supposed to look about 20 years younger).

Uh...ok, even if you go the "replace Shaw with Hayden" route, you still run into the same problem. Now, Anakin looks like he did in Ep. 3, so rather than being twenty years too old, he's twenty years too young. Not exactly an improvement.

So unless you're going to suggest replacing Alec with Ewan, this observation won't work as a supporting argument for the Shaw replacement...
