Obi-Wan Kenobi is dead

You kooky conspiracy theorists. The Death Star's hull was covered with freaking Quadanium steel! Only a chain reaction of stellar fuel igniting the hypermatter reactor could have possibly generated enough heat to destroy a Quadanium steel hull. Any controlled demolition not originating in the Death Star's core would've been ineffective. Proton mines or thermal charges wouldn't have even been capable of denting the Death Star's hull. Any structural engineer will agree with me.

Ok I am sorry but I am just wondering about the blu-ray audio and what it will sound like as most of the fans are.

Well, I know at least one fan who isn't wondering:

Jedi Temple34 says:

I am pleased that the Star Wars BluRay set will feature DTS audio, rather than the infinitely inferior Dolby True-HD. At last, Star Wars as it was meant to be heard! In glorious, crystal-clear, DTS!

Fail.

Anyone else want to explain this to ken?  I'm too tired.

I'll take a swing at it.

Ken, first you said "The new mixes on blu-ray in DTS HD Master Audio will sound great." That's a quality judgment. Then, you indicated your disapproval over the fact that "some people are rushing to judgement on them before the set even comes out." Frink's point is that, by unabashedly declaring that the audio will "sound great," you are in fact rushing to judgment before the set comes out, which is something that you criticize others for doing.

Make sense?

Since when this thread on this website is about the exclusion of the OOT? I thought, as the title indicates, it was about the Blu-ray boxset.

In the future, I suggest actually reading the post to which you're responding. The very first sentence of my post you quoted says: "But this thread is about the upcoming Star Wars BluRay release." I nowhere asserted that this thread is "about the exclusion of the OOT," that phraseology originates with you. My point was that this thread is about the upcoming bluray boxset, the most recent news confirms that the OOT will not be on that boxset, and this website was formed for the express purpose of lobbying for the commercial release of the OOT. Therefore, it's reasonable to expect that members of this site will be discussing the OOT's exclusion from the upcoming boxset, given that the release of said upcoming boxset it what this thread is about.

Just found out? It was announced from the start.

"Just had confirmed to us," then, if you prefer. Given LFL's hype about how "all would be revealed" about the BR set on May 4th, the fact that May 4th confirmed what we had long suspected to be the case is worthy of discussion.

what else do you expect us to talk about in a thread dedicated to the discussion of the BluRay release?

Maybe discuss the actual Blu-ray release.

That's what we're doing. Discussion of the exclusion of an item that won't be on the boxset but should be, is just as much a discussion of the boxset itself as any discussion of what will be on it. Why is that so difficult for you to grasp? Presumably, we would be discussing what will be included in the BR release if any of it was worth talking about in the first place. The transfers of the movies themselves have already been discussed at length, actual documentary offerings are pretty paltry (and that's been discussed at length), and inclusion of a ninety-one minute compilation of pop-culture spoofs of Star Wars when the actual original Star Wars movies aren't even included in the set, is so asinine that it requires no commentary.

Another mindless apologist. That is great some of you have the versions you really want, but why get annoyed at us for lifting our voices to protest the fact that we don't have ours?

My guess, and that's just my guess, is that he reads the same thing everywhere. The same way some people here get annoyed that some like the PT or even accept SE as they are (I don't include my self in this group).

I partially agree with dark_jedi. Everyone is free to write what they like, but every since day one, we knew this boxset was not going to have the OOT and yet I  assume half of these pages are about complaints about the lack of it (the other half is haljordan try to say the colours will be fixed). ;-)

But this thread is about the upcoming Star Wars BluRay release. And it's on originaltrilogy.com, a website that was created to lobby for the commercial release of the original trilogy. And the original trilogy isn't going to be on the upcoming BluRays. So if you or D_J or anyone else doesn't want to read fulmination about the exclusion of the OOT, then why bother even reading this thread on this website? We're a bunch of original trilogy fans who just found out the original trilogy isn't coming out on the upcoming set; what else do you expect us to talk about in a thread dedicated to the discussion of the BluRay release?

Furthermore D_J, while your GOUT-sourced preservations are impressive, they're limited by the source material. No avisynth script will ever be able to achieve results from a laserdisc transfer on par with a professional restoration sourced from the original materials.

As I stated already, lets see where all these comments in this thread gets us, lets see if George Lucas caves in to all the demands quoted here and everywhere else on the net, lets see.

Ok, let's see then. But in order for that to happen, the comments here and elsewhere actually have to be made. Which you're protesting against, right? So...what are you advocating, exactly...?

I don't think that future generations should have to know who dark_jedi is to get decent versions of the original movies. The general public deserves better, whether they think they want it right now or not.

If George Lucas is dead set against releasing the UOT, than so be it, NO amount of complaining, Internet petitions, polls, etc. is going to change that, all I am saying is I have come to accept this.

I understand where you're coming from, and the cynic in me is inclined to agree. But on the other hand, it appears that purist whiners like us succeeded in generating sufficient pressure that the GOUT was released, and that's at least a first step. If nothing else, it reveals that Lucas' position isn't impregnable. We went from "no original version ever" to "only on a laserdisc-sourced bonus DVD." It's not much, but it's something.

If memory serves, you've already seen pictures.

opinions on film restoration/preservation and how it applies to Star Wars - what do you think should/should not be allowed?
Time

Although I'm not in favor of the proposal, I imagine proponents would reply: Han shooting first, no stupid Praxis rings around Alderaan/Death Star/Death Star II, no CG silliness or obstructive Ronto butts in Mos Eisely, no bathrobe emperor hologram in ESB, no Fraggle Rock characters in Jabba's Palace, no silly beak on the Sarlaac, etc. In addition to all that, the colars would presumably be fixed. Although I disagree with the position (as it can't really be considered a true restoration), I do understand the sentiment behind wanting to see the OOT in substance but without the warts.

Those obsolete, deleted scenes from the rough draft were considered for HD scanning and inclusion in this set, but it quickly became apparent that such inclusion would leave no room for the 91-minute documentary on Star Wars spoofs (in 3-d!), so George had to put his foot down. Priorities, people.*

Yes, I had that reaction just the other day.  By someone I gave a copy of Revisited too.  I told him then that I strongly dislike the changes in the prequels.  He told me his 2 favourite SE changes were the new Palpatine dialogue in ESB and Hayden in RotJ.  He tried the "good man that was Anakin died..." bit on me, but I had none of it.

The fact that anyone feels compelled to use this argument shows how ham-fisted Lucas' revisionism truly is. ROTJ as a film (and as the conclusion to the SW trilogy) hinges on the question of whether or not such an assertion could be true. Luke insists, "There is still good in him," and Obi-Wan, echoing the sentiments of every Lucas apologist out there, disagrees: "He's more machine now than man, twisted and evil." Of course, by the end of the movie we find out that Luke was right after all, and even Obi-Wan with all of his ascended wisdom couldn't see it. "You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister...you were right." The new "Saga" approach totally undermines this, which is a shame since it's fundamental to ROTJ's narrative.

Furthermore, the fact that everyone and his grandma loathes, despises, and hates Hayden Christen's version of Anakin kinda mitigates against the "good man" premise necessary for such an argument to work in the first place...
