Ask the member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints AKA Interrogate the Mormon
Time

Darth Ender, I'm a bit curious about Alma 7:10, which seems to prophesy that the "Son of God" (presumably Jesus Christ) will be born in Jerusalem. Obviously, this constitutes at least an apparent contradiction with the Bible, which specifies the birth of Christ, both predictively and descriptively, as Bethlehem (Mic. 5:2; Matt. 2:1; Luke 2:4-7). I'm sure this has been addressed by LDS apologists before, but I'm curious as to what your take on it is. Thanks.

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

Since Star Trek Online went free-to-play, I downloaded it a couple weeks ago. I've had mixed reactions to MMORPG's in the past, but I figured I might as well give it a try since, y'know, it's free.

After playing it for a couple weeks, I must say that I am truly impressed by this game. Lots of variety and customization options help prevent it from becoming too monotonous. There's also some good incentive to keep leveling up, since at certain levels/ranks you gain access to new ships and new duty officers. Now obviously the creators are in the business to make money, so you're encouraged to spend real-world money on "cryptic points" to unlock custom items/uniforms/etc. in-game, but you don't really need to do that in order to have a rewarding game experience. It's totally optional, and choosing not to buy any "cryptic points" doesn't in any way detract from or substantially limit the game.

Whether or not you're a trekkie, if you've been waffling on whether or not to try this, I'd definitely recommend it. It's not like it costs you anything to give it a shot, right? (Aside from lots of potentially squandered spare time, that is...)

It's brilliant in places.

It's a short watch mind because it was killed before the full first series was finished which is frustrating because just as you get into it, it's finished.

 Killed? Season? I don't understand.

"Firefly" is an awesome miniseries, and it sure was cool how so many people loved it that they made the last episode a theatrical film, like "High School Musical 3"

Ah. So, the film came after ! That's what I thought. (maybe I didn't understand what has been said in the previous posts).

Yup. Your best bet is to watch all of Firefly (don't skip a single episode, because each one is excellent), and then finish it off with the film Serenity. Definitely one of the greatest sci-fi franchises out there; anyone who tells you it's not worth watching needs to have his/her brain examined, in my opinion.

The music of the Original Trilogy vs the music of the Prequel Trilogy
Time

The OT music will always be a classic, but I feel it is aging somewhat, especially ANH.  I can hardly listen to most of ANH anymore except for the main theme, the Death Star battle, and Leia's theme.

Personally, I disagree with this sentiment completely. Star Wars is my favorite soundtrack of the six. I feel that it works flawlessly on two levels: both as music in itself, and insofar as it develops and exegetes the emotional mood of the film. As much as I enjoy the prequel soundtracks, I'd rather listen to the Star Wars score any day.

From Timothy Zahn's facebook page:

Timothy Zahn said:

While most of the details (including the title) will have to wait until an official announcement is made (which I'm told will be sometime next month), I *have* been authorized to release a few tidbits concerning my now-officially-approved upcoming Star Wars novel.

First, it will be be set in the classic movie era.

Second, it will be an Ocean's Eleven-type heist caper.

And third, it will star everyone's favorite smuggler, Han Solo.

Sounds great! I like the idea of a non-"epic" heist type novel set in the Star Wars universe. With any luck, it'll exclude any Sith lords/Death Stars/space battles/etc. Also, here's hoping it won't include Thrawn or Mara; as much as I love those characters and as much of a Zahn fan as I am, nevertheless I feel that he tends to go overboard on including them wherever possible.

Personally, I find the music to be just about the only enjoyable element of the PT. The movies suck, granted, but I still say Williams delivered solid scores for all three films (AOTC is admittedly the weakest of the lot).

As for your comment that "none of the music within them [the prequels] has ever stirred any sort of lasting impression in me," I can sympathize. But I tend to think that that's a result of the lack of decent storytelling and characterization in the prequels. The OT scores are more emotionally meaningful to you and me because they play upon a "connection" of sorts that we've formed with these characters whom we have come to know and love, and with the gripping storylines as well. When it come to the PT there's no such connection to play upon, because the source material was too shallow to begin with.

That being said, I think the PT scores qua scores are just fine.
