Something that's always bothered me about the Prequels
Time
Well, the official continuity has already explained why this is. According to Lucasfilm, every R2 unit has a warranty of 20 years. After that they are not guaranteed to work perfectly. So, since over 20 years had passed by the time of the OT, he had expired. Another possible explanation is evidenced in the droids animated series. In that series, with each owner, R2 gets his parts and tools changed and customised. All it takes is for an owner to remove the rockets, which is likely what happened. That's the storyline reason why he didn't have them. In reality, however, it was obviously due to technology limitations and such. It's also just another example of Lucas' vision changing. . Hope that answers your question.

The Mace Windu Debate

From the few interviews I've heard, Lucas seemed annoyed that Fett was brought back, even if he did approve his use. So characters like Mace Windu was given more definite ends. The character this really shows up with is Aalya Secura, the blue twilek female jedi. The clonetroopers were shown blasting her to nothing, I would think to specifically keep her from showing up in future EU books/comics, etc. Windu is gone, and hopefully some EU story won't ressurect him. I also agree that he wasn't as great of a character as he could of been/was lead to believe he would be. So I don't really want to see more of him.

We'll just have to wait and see what the old Lucas marketing machine throws at us!
