Was that really the first Death Star in ROTS?
Time
Your theory also makes perfect sense. People tend to forget that time in Star Wars may not always be as seen in screen. The book your friend was referring to was actually written in the 90's, well before ROTS. It is a coicidence that that book could go so well with ROTS. Here is are the two images: one from ROTS, and the other is the drawing made in the EU .

GTA3 was... a brilliant game. It and Galaxies have a certain quality to them that I have NEVER seen in any other game. Those two are the ONLY games I have ever been able to stay interested in, and stay interested in. There is, as you very well know, ALWAYS something to do. Always new things to discover. For instance, a quality of GTA3 that I enjoyed was the relative difficulty of learning to hly the dodo plane. And once you learned, you could go anywhere in Liberty City. And then there was the once-mysterious hidden city behind Shoreside Vale...

Ep. III DVD - Purple vertical line?

Just one question: can you see the line in your computer with your disc?

If yes, couldn't they correct it? Isn't the disc "THX certified"?

I'm sure they could. They probably would say it was a "creative decision" if it really was a mistake, in order to cover their ass, just like they did for Luke having a green lightsaber in the ANH DVD.

I don't know. He has said many times how much he respects the work of Alec Guiness and of how he plans to never do a CG Yoda for ESB and ROTJ. And I know you know the whole deal with him trying to get Frank Oz the academy award for it and all. Hm... maybe he just doesn't have the respect for certain actors, that he does for others.

I certainly agree with you on the Greedo issue. That was a horrible idea to me, even seeing the SE's first as I did. It weakened Han in a way, as many have said. What he did for the DVD is a little more acceptable. I can barely grasp that they may have shot at the same time. Maybe Han knew Greedo was getting ready to shoot and was merely preparing, I don't know. Whatever the reason is, Lucas better have a good reason for it.

I also want to make it clear that I don't really have anything against anyone who likes the original versions, I can see why, as I explained above. I came here becuase, in addition to being interested in Garrett's work on ROTE, I am fascinated by the dedication and interest people have in preserving classic video, be it the OOT, the holiday special, the Star Tours ride video, non0-star wars projects such as Blade Runner, etc. Plus, this is an excellent place to discuss general Star Wars or non-star wars related topics, such as the issue with the death star I posted a few minutes ago. It really was a brilliant idea of Jay to create this site for everyone to gather, as it is an excellent source for those like-minded people interested in film preservation.

Well, the EU is considered canon. I'm looking for a reasonable explanation (films and EU combined), and I think that Lucas' explanation, combined with that of Anderson's, would work very well. Here's what I think: As the "Jedi Academy" books explain, a prototype death star was created to test how one would work, and to see how long it would take or something. Then, as Lucas said, once the actual first death star was beginning to be created, they had many supply problems and union disputes, which caused the process to go on for 19 years, until it was finally completed. And then when constructing the second death star, the Empire had worked out all of the problems, and could more easily and quickly create a new one in less time. Plus, you have the fact that they were using as many officers as possible to create the second one, as evidenced in the Vader/Jerjerrod conversation at the beginning of ROTJ, yet were still only half way finished, and were behind schedule.

By the way, here's a site at the Star Wars wiki which goes into details on this:

I am wondering if one could comsider that Death Star at the end of ROTS the supposed "Death Star prototype," as discussed in Kevin J. Anderson's "Jedi Search" and "Champions of the Force." In the books, it is explained that a prototype was basically built before the actual first death star, and was hidden away in an unnown sector of the galaxy, where it was later destroyed by the New Republic. Now, it's interesting that these books were written a few years before ROTS, yet provide an excellent explanation for the 19 years it took to finish the actual death star. If you combine this explanation given by Anderson (which is considered canon by the way), with that of Lucas in the DVD commentary of "union disputes and supply problems," I think it would be fairly reasonable to say that that WAS in fact the prototype. See, originally, Anderson wrote the deal with the prototype in his books in an attempt to explain away the events in the Star Tours ride. He was attempting to make it canon, and he did. However, it works well now for ROTS as well. Until the 2007 book on the creation of the Death Star is produced (which SW.com reported was in the works a few months back), we won't have a complete answer.

Because I'm generally interested in the preservation of vintage star wars footage, including, but not limited to, the OOT. I signed the petition, as I think that for the sake of film history, and for the sake of those who grew up with it, the OOT needs to be on DVD. But, myself, I don't really prefer it. That's my opinion. I can see why others may prefer it, but I don't personally prefer it. So, yes, I support the site. (And by the way, the way by which I found this site was when I was doing a search for a Return of the Ewok bootleg, and found Garrett's version, here at the site.)

I can answer that. Because that portion on the 2004 DVD blooper reel was of an alternate take of that scene. Higher quality, yes. But the goal in this project, I think, was to recreate the film in its original form, even if that meant a sacrifice of quality. For instance, I've noticed that in some sections (ex. the dressing room scenes), SW.com's version had clearer sounding dialogue, but used an alternate soundtrack in the background. In order to recreate the original, this good quality dialogue couldn't be used.

Well, you are supposed to know who he is by then. In fact, you're supposed to know and hate him pretty damn well by the time you get to ESB. Seeing him there is not meant as an introduction, but to show the emperor for the first time since ROTS. And to respond to what theredbaron said, I just don't like inconsistency. As an example, I also saw the TPM puppett Yoda first, but I consider the Yoda from AOTC and ROTS way better, and more suitable for all the films, even though I saw TPM, ANH, ESB, and ROTJ Yoda before I saw the CG Yoda.

When I first saw ESB in 99', and up until the DVD's, I always hated the inconsistancy in actors. With Ian in TPM ROTJ, I always had wished to see him in ESB. And I got my wish! I also like the fact that he actually mentions Anakin Skywalker in the new dialogue, which even better ties the OT to the PT. It was the same situation with Fett's voice. With a New Zealand accent iun AOTC, it only made sense that he didn't have that raspy voice he did in ESB, and had Temuerra Morrison's voice.

Ever since the 1997 Special Editions speculation has grown that an ultimate edition of the films will be released at some time as the interviews below show:-

GEORGE LUCAS 1997:
Maltin: "Congratulations on the great success of the trilogy special editions at the worldwide box office and congratulations with the recent video release of the special editions. Before we begin to take on-line reader's questions, I would like to ask you one question about the trilogy: Is it now complete; exactly the way you want it?"

Lucas: "No, for the simple reason that a film is always an unfinished project. There is never enough time or money to make a film exactly the way you want it. There's always something that you can do to make it look better. We only had $ 10 million dollars to touch up A New Hope and there are still some things about it and the other two films that I would like to see changed and a couple of scenes that I may still want to add."

JOHN WILLIAMS:
“I am thrilled to have the chance to go back to something I composed in 1977 and be able to make the entire saga continuous theme-wise. Notably absent in the first movie is the Imperial March. Being able to insert that theme in the first movie will create a much stronger emotional flow throughout the Saga. After the release of Episode III George will enhance the original trilogy with additional scenes and special effects, adding my adjustments to the score this will seamlessly branch the entire Star Wars Saga into one massive romantic space opera. I think something of this magnitude has never been done before."

RICK MCCALLUM:
”Three years is a long time, but that’s how long it takes,” he said of the delayed transition. But what, you may ask, is taking up the time exactly? Well, never one to do things half-heartedly, Lucas isn’t happy with a DVD of the original edits, nor, it would seem, of the enhanced Special Editions. Having previously confessed to shooting a number of additional scenes for the original trilogy while filming Episode II and with many more to be lensed during the third prequel’s production, George has made it his mission to complete the story once and for all. And so, we asked, will this spanking new footage make its debut on the DVD releases when they finally arrive? “Absolutely,” confided McCallum with a conspiratorial grin."

The boxset set to be released in 2006/07 should be the ultimate editions of the films and the saga will once and for all be complete!

P.S-
A Prequel Trilogy Boxset has been confirmed to be released in 2006 with the new changes to the films (no date as yet)

The 'Revenge of the Sith' DVD released next month will NOT include the few changes to the films, it will be the theatrical version.

I've asked my source about the new Orginal Trilogy Boxset set to be released in December and all he knows is that it difinantly won't be the orignal theatrical versions or the 1997 Special Editions. He also stated that the films will not be changed again.

Once again the information I have is purely on the 6 Film 'Saga Boxset' and the changes to the films have been made for that and the Prequel Trilogy Boxset only, not the Orginal Trilogy boxset being released in Decmeber or the Revenge of the Sith DVD in November.

I assure you this information 100 percent true. Sources were previously found at the following websites and info will start reamerging on them soon: -
